Poems from the Río Grande is a book of Spanish and English poetry centered around the author Rudolfo Anaya’s childhood and his experiences as a Chicano American and with Chicano culture. Anaya attempts to give audiences teenage or older an idea of what Chicano life really is, how it feels to be Latino in the U.S. Ranging from haikus to epic poems, his poetry uses real-life events and magical realism to talk about subjects such as religion, folklore, history, culture, colonialism, love, nature, and more. Poems from the Río Grande is a perfect blend of Latino and American literary styles and themes, creating a tone that mirrors the complex Chicano culture. With some Spanish, English, and bilingual poems, Anaya connects with a greater audience, and again embodies the linguistic tendencies of the Chicano lifestyle. Alternating from lighthearted and sarcastic to mournful and desperate to contemplative and wistful, the range of poems is truly spectacular, there is something for every reader, even the non-Spanish speakers. This range helps create a fuller picture of Anaya’s experiences as a member of Chicano society and American society in general. Cecilia y Miguel son mejores amigos is a children’s book about the story of two lifelong friends. The story follows Cecilia and Miguel as they grow up and go through life’s struggles side-by-side. The book is written in both English and Spanish, intended for young bilingual children as old as ten years-old. Despite all the shortcomings they go through in their lives, they always remain best friends. Each page of the tale tells a time of adversity for one of the characters, but how the other person was there for them. As they grow up, they become romantically involved and, in the end, get married and have kids. The book provides young readers with the opportunity to read a story in two languages, while also keeping certain Mexican cultural elements throughout the book so they are not lost in the translation. One critique of the book is that it has some sexist elements; there are multiple times where Miguel becomes mad when Cecilia does something better than he does, but she does not do the same when the roles are reversed. Another critique is that the story has a girl and a boy fall in love, which portrays the idea that men and women cannot be friends without being romantically involved. Despite this, Cecilia y Miguel son mejores amigos does a great job reminding young children that, through thick and thin, a best friend is always there for you. (AM)  

Cecilia y Miguel son mejores amigos es un libro para niños sobre la historia de dos amigos de toda la vida. La historia sigue a Cecilia y Miguel mientras crecen y sufren a las pruebas de la vida hombro a hombro. El libro está escrito en inglés y español para los niños jóvenes y bilingües hasta los diez años. A pesar de todas las faltas que ellos sufren en sus vidas, siguen siendo mejores amigos. Cada página del cuento cuenta un momento de adversidad para uno de los personajes, pero los amigos siempre están en las buenas y en las malas. Conforme ellos crecen, empiezan una relación sentimental y, finalmente, se casan y tienen hijos. El libro provee a los lectores jóvenes la oportunidad de leer una historia en dos idiomas. Además, mantiene algunos elementos culturales de México a través del libro así que los elementos no perdieron en la traducción. Una crítica del libro es que tiene algunos elementos sexistas; en múltiples ocasiones Miguel se vuelve enojado cuando Cecilia hace algo mejor que él, pero ella no hace lo mismo cuando los papeles están revertidos. Otra crítica es que la historia tiene una chica y un chico que se enamoran, que retrata la idea que los hombres y las mujeres no pueden ser amigos sin tener una relación sentimental. A pesar de esto, Cecilia y Miguel son mejores amigos logra recorda a los niños jóvenes que, en la dicha y en la adversidad, un mejor amigo siempre estará allí. (AM)

A Bean and Cheese Taco Birthday is the story of a young boy named Ariel who only wants to eat bean and cheese tacos to celebrate his fifth birthday. His older brother Darió cannot understand why he doesn’t want to do something more exciting and special. On the day of his birthday, Ariel and Darío are picked up from school early to go to the park with their parents. They eat delicious bean and cheese tacos, play on the playground, blow bubbles, float Ariel’s new toy boat around the pond, and ride in the park ranger’s special car. At the end of their wonderful day, Darío decides that next year he wants a bean and cheese taco birthday too. This children’s fiction story is bilingual, with English and Spanish text. The audience for this book is children in the United States between the ages of five and seven as those are the ages of the two boys in the story. Two important messages for young children arise in this book: the importance of time spent with family and cherishing the simple things in life. This book is a wonderfully written and engaging story of family and fun. Darío is shocked when he realizes that his little brother’s party that initially sounded boring turns out to be amazing. A Bean and Cheese Taco Birthday teaches children that the most extravagant and expensive things are not always the best. (AB)

An animator’s gallery shows images of princesses, animals and more from Disney from 1927 to now. It is not a typical book because instead of words it has unconnected drawings. The images in this book are not connected to a story, but are connected to Disney. In North American culture the majority of the characters are recognizable and create happiness in the hearts of audiences of all ages. The book is based in the idea that these images are recognizable and valuable in the lives of the public. Although these are happy images, it is important to remember that they do not represent real life. Instead, these images perpetuate stereotypes related to gender, race and class that exist in North American culture. The majority of people in the Disney drawings are white. The times where “others” are represented, they are represented by animals. Disney also reaffirms the North American idea that a woman’s beauty is more important than her character. In the drawings, it is evident that the corporation of Disney values rich and white people, as well as important men and beautiful women. Disney in the book’s drawings represents a homogenous society instead of a real, varied society. It is an enjoyable book but one must examine it critically or one may think these stereotypes are reality. While enjoying this book it is important to consider the implications of the images, especially in the perpetuation of the stereotypes and the implications that they bring. (NF) 

An animator’s gallery muestra imágenes de princesas, animales y más de Disney de 1927 hasta la actualidad. No es un libro típico porque en vez de palabras, contiene imágenes no que no están conectadas entre sí aunque todas están relacionadas con Disney. En la cultura norteamericana, la mayoría de estos personajes son reconocidos y crean alegría en las almas del público de todos edades. El libro se basa en la idea que estas imágenes son reconocidas y valiosas en la vida del público. Aunque las imágenes son felices, es importante recordar que no representan la vida real. En lugar de esto, los dibujos perpetúan estereotipos con relación al género, la raza, y la clase social que existen en la cultura norteamericana. La mayoría de los personajes en los dibujos de Disney son blancos. Las veces cuando “otros” están representados, es a través de los animales. Además, Disney reafirma la idea norteamericana que la belleza de las mujeres es más importante que su carácter. En los dibujos, es evidente que la empresa Disney valora a las personas ricas, blancas, los hombres importantes y las mujeres bonitas. A través de los dibujos en este libro, Disney representa la sociedad homogénea y no la sociedad real y variada. Es un libro agradable pero uno tiene que con razonamiento crítico o podría pensar que estos estereotipos son la realidad. Mientras disfruta de este libro es importante considerar las implicaciones de las imágenes, especialmente en la propagación de los estereotipos y las implicaciones que esto trae. (NF)

Estas manos: Manitas de mi familia is a bilingual, fictional, children’s book written in Spanish and English about a young girl who compares the hands of her family to various different types of plants based on their endearing characteristics. In the first half of the book she describes the hands of her mother, father, siblings, grandmother and grandfather and all the gifts their hands have given her. In the latter half of the book she describes how when she is older, she will return all of these gifts herself. Each page is written with the Spanish translation on top and the English version below and is accompanied by a full-page illustration. In addition there is a page in the back of the book dedicated to explaining various symbolism throughout the book. The book is intended to be read by children perhaps 7-8 years old, however realistically it is an adorable story that can even warm the hearts of adults who read this to their child. The book is a cross-cultural comment on the importance of family in everyday life. Estas manos: manitas de mi familia is a touching story that comes straight from the heart of Mr. Carabello and enters many fortunate homes and schools (MA). 

Estas manos: Manitas de mi familia es un libro de niño bilingüe y de ficción escrito en español e inglés sobre una chica joven que compara las manos de su familia a varios tipos de plantas diferentes basadas en sus características adorables. En la primera parte del libro, ella describe las manos de su madre, su padre, sus hermanos, sus abuelos y todos los regalos que ellos le han dado. En la segunda parte del libro, ella describe que cuando ella está mayor, ella misma va a devolverles todos estos regalos. Cada página está escrita con la traducción en español por encima y la versión en inglés por abajo y es acompañada por ilustraciones de página completa. Además hay una página al final del libro dedicada a explicar varios símbolos dentro del libro. Se espera que los niños de entre 7 y 8 años lean este libro, pero en realidad es un cuento adorable que puede llegarles al alma a los adultos que leen este libro con sus hijos. Este libro es un comentario multicultural sobre la importancia de la familia en la vida diaria. Call me tree is a bilingual English and Spanish text that compares one young boy’s maturation with the growth of a tree. This gentle and imaginative fiction story describes the Latino boy’s thoughts on diversity as he notices the similarities and differences of the other trees around him. The main character begins as a seed in the earth, but with the first extension of his hand, he is freed from the mud, dreaming of the future and relying on his strong roots to support him. Originally written as a picture storybook for children ages 5-10, the story’s celebration of diversity is applicable for readers of all ages. Call me tree is unique among other literature of its genre in that it emphasizes the beauty of diversity in a metaphorical way that early childhood readers can easily understand. Just as people from diverse backgrounds complement each other, the trees in this story work together to create a beautiful forest. The use of curved lines in the illustrations insinuates unity throughout the text and imitates nature’s natural processes. Gonzalez’s illustrations are relatively realistic, as they depict the Latin American boy with darker skin and dark hair. With its poetic text and sweet, expressive feel, Gonzalez’s Call me tree is culturally relevant for all ages. (SDP) 

Llámame árbol es un libro bilingüe para niños que compara la maduración de un chico con el crecimiento de un árbol. Este cuento sutil y expresivo de ficción describe los pensamientos del chico latino sobre la diversidad cuando se da cuenta de las similitudes y las diferencias entre los otros árboles alrededor de él. El personaje principal empieza como una semilla en la tierra, pero con la primera extensión de su mano, se libera del barro, soñando con el futuro, dependiendo de sus raíces fuertes para apoyarse. Originalmente escrito como un libro de cuentos con ilustraciones para los niños, la celebración de diversidad en este cuento se puede aplicar a los lectores de cualquier edad. Llámame árbol es único entre otra literatura de su mismo género porque enfatiza la belleza de la diversidad en una manera metafórica que pueden entender fácilmente los niños de la infancia temprana. Francisco begins an adventure of making kites and soon he finds himself making them for a man who owns a store for recycled materials. The book is full of colorful illustrations showing the remarkable kites that Francisco creates with recycled materials, like a dragon, a butterfly, and a spaceship. This book is perfect for young readers who are beginning to learn English and Spanish. Each page has the English and the Spanish translations of the story. Parents and teachers can use this book to discuss the journey of moving to a new place with a child. Young readers, ages 4-8, will be inspired by the creativity Francisco has to create these wonderful kites. Francisco's Kites is a children's picture book about a young immigrant from El Salvador named Francisco. This fictional short story, written in both English and Spanish, follows Francisco and his mother as they begin their life in a new country. Francisco misses his native country, and especially flying kites with his friends. Unable to afford a kite, Francisco builds his own from discarded materials and flies them in the park. Francisco's homemade kites catch the eye of a store owner who offers to buy more of his kites. After making and selling the kites, Francisco and his mother go to a Salvadoran restaurant to celebrate. This short story provides young children, most likely between the ages of 7-10, with an exposure to a different language and culture. It is highly recommended because of its simplicity, educational value, and positive message. The story is easy to follow and holds the attention of children with colorful illustrations and simple word choice. Francisco and his mother often allude to cultural aspects of their life in El Salvador which allows the reader to learn about the culture. Children are also introduced to the concept of immigrant families and their struggle. Francisco's Kites is a great tool for young children to improve language skills while also developing cultural awareness. (QB) 

Las Cometas de Francisco es un libro ilustrado para niños sobre un inmigrante joven de El Salvador de nombre Francisco. Este cuento corto de ficción, escrito en inglés y español, observa a Francisco y su madre mientras empiezan su vida en un país nuevo. Es altamente recomendado debido a si simplicidad, su valor educativo, y su mensaje positivo. Using rhyme to appeal to its main audience of children between the ages of 4-8, the book is easy to understand because it follows a repetitive pattern with the phrase “the place where you live” on each page. Written in equal parts English and Spanish, the book follows two children as they do different activities in various places around their house, neighborhood and in their community. The Place Where You Live is full of bright colored drawings of the adventures of the children as they go to places like the kitchen, park, and school. These places evoke positive emotions in the reader because they are experiences that any child can relate to their life. By the end of the book, the children are sleeping in the arms of their mom and dad after their day filled with exploration of their community. The book can be enjoyed by boys and girls and it shows many fun activities in “the place where you live”. This bilingual story shows that a community can be considered home to Spanish and English speakers alike. (HP) 

El lugar done vives es un libro de ficción bilingüe y fácil de leer para niños que describe los lugares alrededor de un hogar. Usando la rima para atraerle a su público principal de niños entre las edades de 4 a 8, el libro es fácil de entender porque sigue un patrón repetitivo con la frase “el lugar donde vives” en cada página. Escrito en inglés y español en partes iguales, el libro sigue a dos niños mientras hacen actividades diferentes en varios lugares alrededor de su casa, su barrio y en su comunidad. El lugar donde vives está lleno de dibujos de colores vivos de las aventuras de los niños mientras van a lugares como la cocina, el parque y la escuela. Water Rolls, Water Rises is a children’s book of poetry that explores the varying characteristics of water and the ways that water effects the diverse landscapes and cultures on Earth. Both the beautiful illustrations and rich language lead the reader around the world to see how water interacts with the people, places, and things that make up life as we know it. The stanzas of descriptive text in both English and Spanish are short, but are supplemented with illustrations that bring stories of their own. These illustrations show people and real places from around the world, making the book an excellent celebration of the diversity on Earth. To give context, there is a page in the back that explains the real-world inspiration for each image. Furthermore, because of the minimal text, the reader may even creatively fashion their own stories for the characters – animal, human, or otherwise – that appear alongside water in the illustrations. This book is most appropriate for late elementary school or early adolescent readers who will be able to understand its complex language but will still appreciate its vibrant illustrations. The main characters, Bella and Mama Alma, spend time together to remember events from their lives because Mama Alma is weakening. They remember all the times when Mama Alma taught a skill or game to Bella. Mama Alma constantly repeated that she will always be with Bella, and taught her to plan a remembering day each autumn. Eventually Mama Alma passed away, but Bella remains happy and knows that Mama Alma is always with her. The whole village gets together to plan a remembering day, and then celebrate it the following day. After their first remembering day, more families began their own traditions, and now they celebrate every year. Experiencing the death of a loved one can be devastating. This book helps children to understand the celebration of The Day of the Dead and that death does not need to be a bad or sad event, but is an opportunity to appreciate and remember the time that they had spent with the dead in their lives. The book Sofi and the Magic, Musical Mural is a story written in both English and Spanish. The text is for children ages 5 to 8, and mixes realistic fiction with an element of fantasy and imagination. The story follows Sofi, a young girl living in New York City, on her adventure to the corner store that turns into a magical journey inside of a mural on the wall of a building. Sofi encounters many traditional Puerto Rican musicians and dancers, and most excitingly, a vejigante, a costumed monster that playfully dances and tries to gently hit people with its little bag. Sofi is initially afraid of the vejigante, but as she dances with it, she slowly learns there is nothing to be scared of. The book has vibrant colors and illustrations that, along with the book’s content, provide insight into the Puerto Rican culture. This book is a good resource for children who are just starting to be interested in others, and in the cultures of their peers. Children can learn about culture in a non-threatening setting with lots of pictures to look at and enhance their reading. The fact that the book is in two languages means that more people can access it and its content. The two languages, especially, along with the rest of the book’s features provide readers with a basic understanding of Puerto Rican culture while instilling the idea that culture isn’t different or dangerous, it is simply something that exists. Culture is something that everyone can embrace and learn from. (JS) 

El libro Sofí y el mágico mural musical es una historia escrita tanto en inglés como en español. El texto es para los niños de edades cinco a ocho, y mezcla la ficción realista con un elemento de fantasía e imaginación. La historia sigue a Sofi, una niña joven que está viviendo en la ciudad de Nueva York, en su aventura a la bodega que se convierte en una travesía mágica a través de un mural en la pared de un edificio. Sofi encuentra muchos músicos y bailadores tradicionales de Puerto Rico, y lo más emocionante, un vejigante, un monstruo en traje que baila alegremente y trata a golpear a la gente ligeramente con su bolsa pequeña. Al principio, Sofi le tiene miedo al vejigante, pero mientras baila con él, aprende lentamente que no hay nada que temer. El libro tiene colores e ilustraciones vibrantes que, junto con el contenido del libro, proveen conocimiento a la cultura puertorriqueña. This book is a good example of what cultural understanding looks like to children. Throughout the book, the two go on a journey to teach people, especially children, about their differences. They arrive at an elementary school in Mrs. Muiche’s classroom, attempting to force the children into listening to them. After a scare with the children, Pedro and George tell everybody about how they are different and how their differences are important. After everything, they head home and are content with their teaching. This book tells and illustrates the journey that Pedro and George embark on in their goal of worldwide cultural awareness. This book also has various big and fun illustrations and uses simple language to captivate the attention of children. Pedro and George, while being a fun read, also promotes avoiding stereotypes and why it is important to understand differences between people. (MC)

‘Twas Nochebuena is a bilingual text that describes the typical traditions of a Catholic Latino family during the holiday season, particularly during Christmas Eve and Christmas. The narrator is a little girl and we follow her throughout the whole day in order to see all of the Christmas Eve preparations and celebrations. The main message of ‘Twas Nochebuena is to demonstrate the importance of love and the value of family, especially for Latino families. In order to express the value of family during the holiday season, the family does everything together, like cooking, playing Christmas lottery, opening gifts, and attending Midnight Mass. This book has great drawings with a lot of vibrant colors on each page in order to illustrate the most important aspects of the Latino culture during Christmas Eve and Christmas. Because this is a bilingual book, a majority of the words are in English, but the most important words for representing the culture are written in Spanish. For reference, there is a glossary on the last page that has all of the Spanish words and their meaning in English. In that case, it is a fantastic way for children to learn Spanish, especially those between four and ten years old. ‘Twas Nochebuena is an excellent book for learning more about the Latino culture and the typical traditions of Latino families during the holiday season, while at the same time demonstrating the importance of love and gratitude, and finally the value of family. This story follows Elefante y Cerdita as they discover themselves within the pages of a book and the silly ways they interact with the reader. The two characters start the book with the discovery that they are the narrators. After their initial celebration and excitement, they play a prank on the readers by making them read words loudly in their head. After the fun and games are over the two realize that the book, like all books, has to come to an end. With this discovery, the mischievous two find a clever way to keep the book never ending! Estamos en un Libro is a wonderful story for children with simple illustrations and text for children learning to read. The hand-drawn illustrations are artistic and fun, frequently they can be simple and leave much blank space on the page, therefore it is the reader’s job to fill the creative gap. The story teaches children the value of friendship by showing the relationship between Elefante and Cerdita, seeing the way they work together to interact with the reader, as well as problem solving together when they realize the book is ending. The book emphasizes the necessity for friendship, silliness, and harmless jokes while including fundamental vocabulary and grammar for children. (CB)

The book illustrates the concept of sharing by recounting the story of Elephant and his thought process as to whether or not he should share his ice cream with his best friend Piggy. ¿Debo compartir mi helado? cleverly uses animals as their main characters to avoid any racial, sexual or cultural differences that may arise had a certain group of people been represented and not others. Elephant’s thought process illustrates clearly the emotional frustrations a child may encounter when having to share something they may like. Entirely written in Spanish, not only does the dialogue exemplify these frustrations distinctly, the illustrations also show the physical effects of the emotions the children may encounter such as crying. This book is great for young children as it allows them to learn one of the simple courteous lessons in life: sharing, through a fun and informative short story. (AGS)
