Luther College Religion Department hosts forum Nov. 18

The Luther College Religion Department invites the Decorah community to "Religion among the Liberal Arts," the second event in the 2014-15 Luther College Religion Forum Series, "Teaching Religion at a College of the Church." The forum will take place Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Valders Hall of Science Room 206 on the Luther campus. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther College presents Religion Forum Series Oct. 30

The Luther College Religion Department will host the first Religion Forum in the 2014-15 Religion Forum Series "Teaching Religion at a College of the Church" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 in the Franklin W. Olin Building Room 102. The panel will facilitate conversation on what it means to teach biblical studies at an ELCA college and at Luther College in particular.

Religious studies at Luther College

The religion department decided to dedicate this year's religion forum to the topic "teaching religion at a college of the church." It seems that, while I was away on sabbatical, my colleagues felt that there is a need to clarify the purpose and scope of the academic study of religion at a church affiliated college. From my experience, I have to agree that there seems to be a lot of confusion with regard to the academic study of religion in general and its role at Luther College in particular.
