The Religion department will show the Academy Award winning film, "Spotlight," from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in the Franklin W. Olin Building Room 102. A discussion led by religion department faculty will follow the showing of the film. "Spotlight" is the compelling true story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe investigation that challenged and uprooted one of the world's oldest and most trusted religious institutions. When the "Spotlight" reporters' tenacious investigation of allegations in the Catholic Church uncovered years of abuse, it also revealed a decades-long cover-up at the highest levels. 

The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Sponsored collaboratively by the Religion department, College Ministries and the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement, this showing of "Spotlight" will give way to a discussion of long-standing religious institutions and trust. The Religion department is excited to present this film and discussion as part of the shared Paideia, Visual and Performing Arts department and Religion department theme, "Who Do You Trust?"

This year's Paideia texts and issues theme, "Who Do You Trust?" was developed by the Paideia Endowment Governing Board, the Religion department and the Visual and Performing Arts department. Drawing from a wide variety of texts from the arts, sciences and humanities, the series attempts to facilitate discussions of personal and institutional trust: who or what are people predisposed to trust? Is trust a fundamental element of character, community or culture? What are the results of mistrust or betrayal?
