CIES Weekly Newsletter April 3 - April 9, 2022

Ramadan Mubarak to all those who celebrate!

Announcements

  • Student applying for OPT: Please continue contact Clara, [email protected]. She will be working in the CIES office at an extremely limited capacity moving forward but will remain your point of contact for OPT.
  • Meal Accommodations During Ramadan! The Council for Faith and Life has been working with dining services to make the following options possible:
    • Impacted students can exchange caf swipes for dining dollars, which can be used in the evenings to purchase food at Marty's. This is a $17 exchange, so dining services is hopeful that this will be a sufficient dollar amount to provide adequate dinner food. Students would work directly with dining services to make this exchange a week at a time.
    • Marty's is back to a full menu, so there are a reasonable variety of options; however, martys is currently closed Friday and Saturday evenings.
    • The CFAL is partnering with community organizations, student organizations, and area congregations to provide meals for these evenings. These dinner meals will be served at the tables outside Oneota Market in the Union.
    • If there is a need and desire, dining services can also help provide breakfast items.
    • Students who are interested in any/all of the above options -- dining dollar exchange, Friday/Saturday dinners, and/or breakfast should fill out this Google Form.
  • International student seniors:  If you are NOT graduating as planned this May, you must inform your DSO in CIES as soon as possible. If you don’t let us know in advance about any change to your plans, your SEVIS record will auto-complete after spring semester.
  • International Students:  CIES has created a new KATIE site called International Student Resources. This site contains a variety of information and resources about topics that apply to you as an F-1 student at Luther. Please check it out and get in the habit of looking there first when a question comes up about taxes, CPT, health insurance, and more. We also welcome feedback on additional topics which you think should be included. (Email us if you have problems accessing the site)

Events

  • Register for the National Student Leadership Diversity Convention! The National Student Leadership Diversity Convention is the largest national gathering of student leaders and campus based advisors to address the most critical topics of diversity and social justice challenging our campuses today. Through experiential workshops, keynote sessions, and round table discussions teams of students will explore various elements of diversity and how they affect themselves and their campuses. During the conference students will be led through facilitated workshops to develop a Campus Action Plan for a program or event that the teams selects to work on together on in order to bring back a piece of the NSLDC experience to their own campuses. The in-person conference will be held April 22-23 in New York City. The virtual conference will be held April 30th. Request for conference support is available here!
