Independent Learning

Students have the ability to complete coursework of their own design via application for a Directed Study, Directed Reading, Directed Research, or Independent Study. The description for each is listed.

  • Directed Study - Provides students with an opportunity to pursue individualized or experiential learning with a faculty member either within or outside the major.
  • Directed Readings - Allows students an opportunity to pursue a specialized area of the discipline for which course offering are limited by following a prescribed reading list under the direction of a faculty member.
  • Directed Research - Involves a research project under the supervision of department faculty. Recommended for students who expect to attend graduate school.
  • Independent Study - Used by the student who wishes to design a course of independent study not otherwise available in the curriculum.
