The story begins with a girl with ten different adorable puppies who disappear one by one as the song progresses, until the children have counted down to one. Ten Little Puppies includes the music and lyrics to the song so that children and parents can sing and play this traditional favorite. This book also includes short descriptions of each breed of puppy illustrated in the book, making it perfect for little dog lovers. (NC)

As time goes on, the two girls come to understand and appreciate each other, realizing what it means to experience something new while staying true to who you are. This story flips back and forth between the two girls’ point of view, creating a fun, thoughtful reading for younger children. Also, because the Spanish language is woven throughout the story, it is perfect for independent readers, bilingual or not, to learn some Spanish while enjoying a great story. (JE)

Martha teams up with an old woman in town to ban the fireworks, but unbeknownst to Martha, Helen has her own solution to help Martha’s scary situation. Fireworks for all by Karen Barss is a great book for beginner readers in both Spanish and English. This book shows great friendship and companionship and is perfect for children ages 4-6. (ES)

Emocionados ante las muchas cosas divertidas que el verano siempre trae, pero lo mejor es el espectáculo de fuegos artificiales cada sábado en su ciudad. Martha camps out is an adventurous book about two girls, Helen and Alice, along with their dog, Martha, that go camping in the woods to gain their last merit badge of Girl Scouts. However, the brother of one of these girls tells them there is a big, scary monster that lives in the woods. They decide to go out to camp still and the ending of the book is the most shocking of it all. Children ranging from ages 5 to 7 will like this thrilling and exciting book filled with twists and turns. (DW)

Este libro bilingüe para los niños ofrece un giro muy interesante y divertido para ayudar a niños que han aprendido el idioma de español bien. Adelita, a new student, is nervous about her first day of school. She doesn’t know anyone; how will she make friends? Her teacher arrives with a basket full of color vegetables, and asks each student to pick one. As Adelita gets her vegetable, she meets another girl. They notice that their vegetables look similar. Adelita decides that they must be “veggie cousins.” This sparks a discussion among the students as the teacher explains that many of the vegetables that she brought are in fact “veggie cousins” despite their differences in shape, size, and color. This discussion allows Adelita to meet many of her classmates and make some new friends. And like the “veggie cousins” her friends are of different shapes, sizes, and colors. This book shows that friendship comes in many different forms while emphasizing the importance of a healthy diet full of vegetables. Because this book is in both English and Spanish, it is excellent for children learning either language. The recipes in the back add a fun touch that the whole family can enjoy. (TK)

This discovery begins a journey through the rainforest and reveals the enormous biodiversity of the cloud forest, while the reader learns a little Spanish along the way. Author Jan Brett is able to include both of the lessons and still tell a story that is entertaining and engaging with beautiful and vibrant illustrations. A perfect book to teach young children about the rainforest and the Spanish language. Ages 3-7. (JM)

This book teaches children the value of selfless acts and the effect it can have on one’s own happiness. The illustrations in this book are highly imaginative and they exemplify the importance of a smile and the consequences of a frown. This book could be used in the classroom as a reading tool for young children and will also teach students to be friendly and helpful towards their classmates. Clara and the curandera is an ideal book for a kindergarten classroom, but it is also a good book for children at a beginning or intermediate reading level. In addition, this book is sure to improve the Spanish skills of every Spanish learner. (BG)

Clara y la curandera es un libro bilingüe para niños sobre una niña malhumorada que encuentra la felicidad. Ella logra la felicidad ayudando a otros, jugando con sus hermanos y leyendo libros. Este libro enseña a los niños el valor de las acciones desinteresadas y el efecto que esto puede tener en su felicidad. Judith Ortiz Cofer is an award-winning author who uses her bicultural experience as a Puerto Rican woman living in the United States of America as inspiration for her poems, novels and prose. ¡A bailar!/Let’s dance! is the result of collaboration between Cofer and illustrator Christina Ann Rodriguez who together present a children’s book filled with color, rhythm and dance. The short story is about a girl and her mother who don their red dancing dresses and go to the town square to hear her father’s salsa band perform. They dance and sing the whole way into town and encourage the townspeople they meet along the way to join them. Pretty soon they have formed a procession and arrive at the park where nearly the whole town has gathered to enjoy the lively performance of the salsa band. I would recommend this book, written mainly in English with Spanish words and phrases speckled throughout, for young English-speaking readers as a way to learn about the Latino culture and introduce them to the Spanish language. Cofer has done a superb job of mixing in Spanish language in a way in which even young readers are capable of understanding the unknown words through the use of context clues. (EV)

Judith Ortiz Cofer es una autora galardonada que usa su experiencia bicultural de mujer puertorriqueña viviendo en los Estados Unidos como inspiración para sus poemas, novelas y prosa. ¡A bailar! Let’s dance! es el resultado de la colaboración entre Cofer y la ilustradora Christina Ann Rodríguez, un libro para niños, lleno de colores, ritmos y danza. Este cuento corto trata de una niña y su mamá que se ponen sus vestidos rojos de danza y van al parque para escuchar la banda de salsa de su papá. Ellas bailan y cantan mientras van al centro y animan a las personas que encuentran en el camino a venir con ellas. Rápidamente, se forma una procesión grande y llegan al parque donde casi toda la gente del pueblo está escuchando y disfrutando el concierto apasionado de la banda de salsa. Recomiendo este libro, escrito en inglés con palabras y frases en español, para niños anglófonos como manera de aprender sobre la cultura latina y como introducción al idioma. With her father, six year old Gabriella must leave her home in Havana, Cuba and move to the Bronx, New York due to 1959 Cuban revolution to join her mother and grandparents. She leaves behind her other grandparents who will later rejoin the family and all the things that are so familiar- her big house, the warm weather, her toys, and the sound of the ocean. In the Bronx the weather is cold and snowy, the buildings are tall, there is noisy traffic and everyone speaks English. The book tells of her adjustment to her English-speaking school and neighborhood. It is written in English with occasional phrases in Spanish that are immediately translated into English. There is glossary of Spanish terms at the end of the book. This book is good for children in third and fourth grades. (EJ)

Gabriela, una nina de seis años, tiene que salir de Cuba con su padre debido a la revolución de 1959. Ellos se reunen con su madre y su abuelos que ya están en el Bronx, Nueva York. Todo es diferente allí: hace mucho frío, hay nieve nieve, rascacielos, mucho trafico ruidoso y mucha gente anglohablante. Gabriela extraña el clima tropical, a sus abuelos, sus juguetes y el sonido del mar. El libro muestra cómo Gabriela se adapta a su escuela y a su ambiente anglohablantes. Escrito en inglés con frases en español que son traducidas inmediatamente al inglés, al final del libro hay diccionario de términos en español traducidos al inglés. You don’t have a clue is a collection of short stories written by different authors and edited by Sarah Cortez. It is written in English with a few Spanish words included occasionally. En every story, there is a Latino teen who is faced with a problem or a situation to be resolved. The book says that the stories contain common situations for adolescents, but many situations are very strange or impossible, like interaction with aliens, the appearance of an ancient Mexican god, or a dismembered arm in a student’s locker. The mysteries are not like those of Sherlock Holmes, but are more like suspense situations for which the main character needs to find a solution. It is well written and for English-speaking students between the ages of 11 and 15 depending on their reading level. This could also be used for older Spanish speaking students who are studying English at an intermediate level. (PN)

El libro You don’t have a clue, es una colección de cuentos cortos escritos por diferentes escritores y editado por Sarah Cortez. Está escrito casi todo en inglés, con algunas palabras en español. En cada cuento hay un latino adolescente que tiene un problema o una situación que necesita resolver. El libro dice que los cuentos hablan de situaciones comunes a los adolescentes, pero muchas situaciones son muy extrañas o imposibles, como la interacción con un extraterrestre, la aparición de un dios mexicano antiguo o un brazo desmembrado en el armario de un estudiante. Los misterios no son como los de “Sherlock Holmes,” sino más como situaciones de suspenso en que el protagonista necesita encontrar la solución. Está bien escrito y es para estudiantes anglohablantes entre las edades de 11 y 15 años. También puede ser usado por estudiantes hispanohablantes que estén estudiando inglés a nivel intermedio. Grandpa used to live alone is a bilingual book about a grandfather whose life is transformed by his precious granddaughter. It is a charming story about an old fellow who doesn’t realize he has been living a quiet and empty life until his grandchild is born, and he is all of a sudden fulfilled with her youth and energy. The pair does everything together and grandpa teaches her the ways of the world. He shows her how to make rice pudding and eventually teaches her how to drive. The granddaughter grows and grows and her grandfather ages alongside her. Gradually their rolls begin to reverse, as the granddaughter starts taking care of her grandfather. This tale is timeless and relays a good moral message. It is a perfect before-bed read for children. Grandpa used to live alone is a great book for readers around the age of five and up. (AP)

Abuelo vivía solo es un libro bilingüe sobre un abuelo cuya vida es transformada por su preciosa nieta. Es una historia encantadora sobre un hombre viejo que no se da cuenta que ha estado viviendo una vida silenciosa y vacía hasta que su nieta nace y, de repente, él se entusiasma con la juventud y energía de ella. Los dos hacen todo juntos y el abuelo le enseña los caminos del mundo. Él le enseña cómo hacer arroz con leche y cómo conducir un auto. La nieta crece y su abuelo envejece junto a ella. The monster in the mattress and other stories by Diane De Anda is a collection of mystery stories for parents to read with their children. The book is written in both English and Spanish and it is a great tool for a child to learn Spanish or English with their parents in a fun and engaging way. The stories are not scary, but rather fun and whimsical. Many of the mysteries involve familiar characters, such as pets and siblings. This book is recommended for children just beginning to read and learn a second language with their parents. (BK)

El monstruo en el colchón y otros cuentos por Diane De Anda es una colección de cuentos de misterio para ser leídos por los padres con sus niños. Escrito en inglés y español, este libro se convierte en útil herramienta para que los niños aprendan estos idiomas con sus padres en una manera divertida y activa. Los cuentos no son de terror, sino divertidos y juguetones. Muchos de los misterios incluyen personajes familiares, como hermanos y mascotas. Mamá and ,e is a wonderful bilingual children’s book about a strong and loving relationship between a daughter and her mother. The young girl is beginning to embrace her growing independence, yet still loves her time spent with her mother, doing activities such as biking and painting. It also contains beautiful illustrations that are a unique blend of realistic and surreal, which, along with lively colors, set the cheerful and warm tone of the story. The simple Spanish words and phrases are perfect for an early elementary school class to start learning about another language, while also recognizing that every day with a mother is special. (MB)

Mamá y yo es un libro bilingüe sobre una relación fuerte y cariñosa entre una hija y su madre. Aunque la niña está comenzando a disfrutar su independencia, le encanta pasar tiempo con su madre y hacer actividades juntas tales como montar en bicicleta y pintar. También, el libro tiene bellas ilustraciones que son mezclas únicas de imágenes realistas y surrealistas que, junto a sus colores vivos, establecen el tono feliz y cálido de la historia. Pinkalicious is about a girl named Pinkalicious who loves everything that’s pink. One day she and her mom make pink cupcakes and Pinkalicious eats almost all of them. The next morning when she wakes up, her whole body is pink. Her dad ties to bath her but it doesn’t work. So her mom brings her to Dr. Wink. Dr. Wink tells her that the only way to get back to normal is to eat things that are green. Pinkalicious becomes very unhappy. While walking back to her house she see’s her friend Alison at the park. Alison can’t see Pinkalicious because she is pink and matches the flowers she is standing by. Once she gets home she decides to sneak another cupcake because she wants to stay pink. However, the cupcake turned her skin red! She didn’t like to be red so she opens her fridge and eats everything that’s green and her skins turns back to normal. Her dad asked what happened to the rest of the cupcakes and her brother runs in with pink skin. This book is a good reading for children in ages 5 to 9. (EC)

The dialogue of the characters is central to the story and includes Nilda, Nilda’s mother and other people in the neighborhood. The novel presents sensitive and authentic descriptions of Puerto Rican culture around the themes of family, love, pride, and determination. Although written in English, conversational Spanish phrases are inserted through the character of Nilda, who uses very simple sentences to try to capture the voice of Puerto Rican Americans. The story does not happen how Nancy thought, but it turns out very well. It is a story about a girl who loves dogs and the lessons that she learns. The illustrations are very colorful and well done; they are perfect for girls that like princesses, dogs, or the colors pink and purple. After the larger words, there are descriptions of their meanings, so it is perfect for young readers or people that are learning Spanish. This book could be used for younger classes. (KS)

This story is about a Mexican girl named Nora that needed to immigrate to Texas from Mexico to live a better life. However, when he stopped sending money to his wife, Aurora, and to Nora, they needed to discover why and try to start a better life for themselves and Nora’s grandmother. Finally, they decide to cross the border too in a horrible mango truck. They start working in order to live in their new home- a place that seemed foreign and cold. While there, Nora befriended two girls, an African-American girl, Keisha, and a girl named Flora, whose family was involved with the neighborhood gangs. Nora and her mother discover that Arturo died in an accident in one of the buildings where he worked. The grandmother comes to the new house and is a comfort to the small family. Their strong faith and positive attitude help the family to survive. Even though her world was disorganized and seemed terrible, Nora can look at the future with hope. This book is recommended to adolescents. (MS)

This book, however, deals with George and his friend, the Man with the Yellow Hat, visiting the library. Once George finds a book that appeals to his interests, George realizes that the library is a paradise of its own, grabbing every book appearing interesting. After grabbing as many books possible, George tries to bring all sorts of books home, eventually causing problems. George soon discovers that his curiosity, indeed, got the best of him. Packed with illustrations on every page and easy-to-read text, this book is ideal for younger children between the ages of 3 and 7. (AK)

Like a lot of kids, Roberto tries to avoid doing chores that he is asked to do by his mother. When asked to clean out his room he avoids it by responding back, “What if the Closet Monster comes and grabs me”, as well when he is asked to clean the table and sweep the floor. Eventually the tables change when he asks his mother if she can read a book to him but she answers with the same excuse. In this entertaining story of a boy thinking ways to avoid doing chores, the author wants the reader to understand that working together to complete a task can be productive and fun. Recommended for readers 5 years old and up. (SR)

When the baseball coach asks George to keep score at the baseball game, he says yes, of course. But he is at first very confused on how to count in the correct order. He eventually learns through the help of some friends, and helps some friends as well! Although a simple story, this book shows the value of helping others. It is a great book for bilingual children to practice using both languages, especially those who enjoy sports, or for adults and children trying to learn more Spanish. (MF)

Esta es una historia típica sobre Jorge, el mono curioso que siempre quiere aprender más. This book is written in Spanish and English, which could help kids who are leaning one of the two languages. The illustrations in the book are very colorful and they would keep young readers interested. The book is directed towards children who are in elementary school because it has some sentences that are moderately complicated, but not extremely difficult. Even though this book is a children’s book, I believe that it could be helpful for anyone who is learning English or Spanish and is at a basic level. This book inspires children to follow their dreams and teaches that imagining is good. The book is appropiate for elementary level children and students of English and Spanish at a basic level. (EK)

Pateo el balón es un libro ilustrado de un niño que le gusta jugar al fútbol. El protagonista de esta historia es Toñito, un joven que siempre se imagina jugando en lugares imaginarios y que es una famosa estrella de fútbol. A Toñito no le gusta hacer su tarea ni mirar programas que no sean de fútbol, pero cuando juega fútbol sueña que todo es posible. Este libro está escrito en inglés y español, por lo que puede servir para niños que sepan uno de los dos idiomas. Las ilustraciones tienen muchos colores y mantienen el interés del lector joven.
