Amalia is a young girl who is extremely close to her grandmother with whom she spends a lot of time. When Amalia’s best friend Martha announces she is moving to California, Amalia doesn’t know how she can have fun without her close friend nearby. Amalia looks to her grandmother for help and guidance, but when her grandmother dies she is not able to provide that support for Amalia anymore, leaving her sad and confused. This story contains a combination of Spanish and English words, making it a perfect book for readers who are bilingual or learning Spanish. There is a Spanish translation as well.This book includes great representations of Latin-American culture and includes recipes from the culture as well. This short novel best suited for young adults. Dancing Home tells the story of a little girl named Lupe who travels from Mexico to the United States to study. Due to Lupe’s lack of English language knowledge, she goes to school with her cousin Margie who has to translate everything. Although Lupe starts her life in Texas with a big communication problem, she manages to feel at home because of her enthusiasm for learning. Margie also plays an important role in Lupe’s story, and even though she was not very happy with Lupe “invading” her home and thought she was taking over her family and friends, the two finally manage to feel like sisters. Some of the themes that will be easily identifiable are feelings of belonging, the use of English and Spanish by Latino immigrants, and the challenges they experience. This book is easy to read and recommended for middle school aged children. (LUS)

Nacer bailando cuenta la historia de Lupe, una pequeña niña que se muda desde México a los Estados Unidos para estudiar. Con una habilidad en inglés casi inexistente, Lupe va a la escuela primaria con su prima Margie, quien es la encargada de traducirle todo lo que sucede a su alrededor. Lupe comienza su vida en Texas con muchos problemas de comunicación, pero gracias a su entusiasmo en aprender otros idiomas, ella logra sentirse como en casa. Margie también juega un papel importante en la transición de Lupe a los Estados Unidos y, a pesar de que ella no estaba muy contenta con la llegada de su prima a su casa porque pensó Lupe que estaba robándole a su familia y amigos, ellas logran superar todas sus diferencias y sentirse como hermanas. Along the way she meets Christian, the lead singer of the rival school’s mariachi band. Christian’s voice and eyes make Alexis melt. The story follows Alexis as she struggles to bring her Mariachi band together and to get Christian to simply notice her. Border Town: Falling Too Fast is part of a book series that does a great job presenting issues of immigration, cultural boundaries, and everyday concerns of high school students. Embedded in the text are Spanish words and phrases that introduce ideas of Hispanic culture and language. It would be great for middle school aged students who express an interest or have a background in Spanish. (EV)

Santiago drops out of school during his graduation year and begins an entrepreneurial venture by selling smoothies with help from his cousins. This juvenile book gives a great insight into Hispanic culture and the life of Central American immigrants in the United States. It contains an excellent narrative and easy English reading with bits and pieces of Spanish. This novel is recommended for young adolescents. (EL)

Border Town: No Second Chances es una historia sobre el ingenuo y humilde joven Santiago Reyes. Santiago, quien vive en la localidad de Dos Ríos, es el hijo de un hombre que está en la cárcel y de una madre que trabaja duro para sostener a su familia. A medida que el tiempo pasa todo es más difícil para la familia Reyes, lo que motiva a Santiago a salirse de la escuela faltando solo medio año para graduarse y comenzar su carrera como empresario vendiendo batidos con la ayuda de sus primos. She shows that being different is okay because she likes to be “unique,” “different,” and “one of a kind.” Marisol’s eighth birthday is coming up and she tells her brother that her party will be “fabulous.” There are so many themes to choose for her birthday; should it be pirate, princess, soccer or unicorn themed? Marisol’s real wish for her birthday, however, is for her grandma to come visit from Peru. In Marisol McDonald and the Clash Bash, Marisol shows how fun it can be to be unique while teaching kids Spanish as well, making it a perfect book for kids of all ages. (CP)

It is written in English with Spanish phrases to help incorporate the Hispanic origin of the celebration. The back of the book includes a glossary for the Spanish words and other important English words that are mentioned in the story. There is also an activity guide for making a macaroni skeleton, and references to learn more about the Day of the Dead. The book is best suited for children who are not familiar with the Day of the Dead celebration and could be read at home for leisure or in a school setting. (AL)

As the book is written in Spanish and English throughout, it would also work well with any beginner Spanish or English student. Whether they are encountering crocodiles, surprising their mother, or simply jumping on the bed, the five little monkeys teach lessons of obedience, safety, generosity, and resourcefulness. In addition, the book is accompanied by fun instructions on how to draw one of the little monkeys. The collection is truly a great tool for inspiring creativity and making reading fun! (JP)

Canta, rana, canta/ Sing, froggie, sing is a book based off of the Spanish folk song that is known all over the Spanish-speaking world. Many adaptations have been made as the song was passed from generation to generation, which prompted the author and publishing company to write this book to keep the tradition alive as it was in their childhood. The story tells a tale of many creatures, including a frog, fly, spider, rat, mouse, cat, dog, baby, mom, dad and Grandma in a yard beginning to make their own noises or songs but then are shushed by other members of the yard. The rhymes and repetition coupled with the absence of a steady plot make this book most appropriate for young children working on memory development. As this was originally a lyrical tune meant for entertainment there are many practical uses that could be implemented in a classroom at the elementary level. If the teacher, or a friend of the teacher, knew how to play the guitar it would be a fun activity to do an interactive sing-a-long with this book. (LB)

Canta, rana, canta/Sing, froggie, sing es un libro basado en una canción folklórica en español que saben todos en los países hispanohablantes. Las diversas adaptaciones a la canción motivaron a la autora y a los editores a escribir este libro para prolongar la tradición. El libro cuenta la historia de unos animales en un patio. En la historia hay una rana, una mosca, una araña, un ratón, un gato, un perro, un bebé, una mamá, un papa y una abuela. Cuando un animal empezaba a cantar en su propia voz, aparecía otro animal y le hacía callar. A causa de las rimas y repetición, este libro es ideal para niños muy pequeños. El propósito original de la canción que sirve de inspiración al libro fue el entretenimiento de la gente, así que el texto podría ser usado en un salón de clase de nivel elemental. My Migrant Family Story is a non-fiction book intended for students ages 7-11. It details the story of the author, Lilia García, during the years when her family worked as migrant farmers. She describes the many difficulties of life as a migrant farmer that she experienced with her parents and seven siblings as they traveled from Texas to Michigan each year. This book will be important to share with students in order to expose the challenges facing many students in the United States who live a migrant life. The book does not have a high difficulty level, so it will not challenge students in it’s intended reading level. The main value of this book lies in its message. There are many ways to incorporate this book into a social studies class that would enhance the study of the lives of migrant farmers in the United States. (AG)

La historia de mi familia migrante es un libro de no ficción que cuenta la vida de Lilia García cuando su familia emigraba al norte para trabajar como agricultores. Lilia y su familia confrontaron muchos obstáculos y una vida difícil. Ella tiene siete hermanos y todos viajaban en camioneta cada año, desde Texas hasta Michigan. The tales included are about a cricket and a puma, a turtle, an opossum, a flea, and a frog who come from the Tarahumara, Seri, Huichol, Truqui and the Tseltal respectively. A map of Mexico is included at the beginning to show where each group lives. Each story is also accompanied by information about the cultures from which the stories came, as well as a glossary. The informational pages help the reader to better understand the reasoning and morals behind each tale and describe the culture of each group of indigenous people. This book would serve well as a simple, but fun, reference for upper elementary to middle school aged students, yet the tales themselves would entertain kids of all ages. (CMM)

By explaining his life growing up in a poor Latino community and overcoming adversity to become the first college graduate in his family, Daniel challenges readers, especially young adults, to receive an education and work towards their dreams. Everywhere Coquís/¡En Dondequiera Coquíes! is a bilingual children’s book about the coquí, a small tree frog native to Puerto Rico. This story tells the tale of a group of coquís living in the rainforest. Though the plot is fictional, the story includes many facts about coquís, notably their bird-like calls, for which they are famous in Puerto Rico. In the story, the coquí frogs struggle to coexist with their neighbors, the green parrots. The parrots are annoyed that the coquí “songs” keep them awake at night. The parrots become very upset and chase the frogs out of the rainforest, forcing them to seek out a new habitat. As the frogs search for a new home, they encounter various environments within Puerto Rico ranging from rainforest to large cities. Eventually the parrots decide they miss the coquí calls and the frogs return to the rainforest. This book would be excellent for a classroom or for pure enjoyment. The bilingual text and captivating illustrations introduce children to the ecology and culture of Puerto Rico. Furthermore, children can learn these concepts through English and Spanish. A glossary is included for Puerto Rican colloquialisms. This delightful story is best suited for children ages 6-9. (AJ)

Este cuento es sobre un grupo de coquíes que vive en el bosque pluvial. El argumento es de ficción, pero incluye información real sobre los coquíes, específicamente sobre su canto tan particular. En Puerto Rico, los coquíes son muy famosos por su “canción” y toda la gente puede reconocer el sonido de estos anfibios. En este cuento, los coquíes luchan por llevarse bien con las cotorras verdes que viven en El Yunque, un parque nacional. Los coquíes cantan cada noche; a causa de eso, las cotorras no pueden dormir y esto les molesta mucho. Con el tiempo las cotorras espantan a los coquíes muy lejos del bosque. Por eso los coquíes tienen que buscar un hogar nuevo. Durante su viaje los coquíes encuentran muchos lugares diferentes, desde bosques pluviales hasta ciudades muy grandes. Este libro es excelente para leer a niños de nivel elemental o por el simple placer de leer. La lectura bilingüe y los dibujos hacen el texto aún más interesante. Se puede usar este libro para introducir temas sobre la ecología y la cultura de Puerto Rico a los niños. Además, pueden aprender estos conceptos en inglés y español. Che Guevara: You win or you die is an interesting and informative book on the life of Che Guevara. The book starts off with an overview of Che which lays the foundation for the rest of the book by describing part of the intricate life he lived. The book then goes through the different phases of Che’s life, starting with his upbringing and ending with his death in Bolivia as well as the mysterious aura that continues to surround him today. This book is perfect for kids who are in middle school and interested in learning the history of one of the Hispanic world’s most notorious political figures. This book is filled with actual photos of Guevara during his military campaigns and during famous speeches that allow the reader to have a better understanding of the actual conditions he dealt with. This book is written completely in English but gives the reader some insight into Latin American and Cuban culture by describing the circumstances pertaining to the Cuban Revolution as well as other communist revolutions. I recommend this book for kids around the middle school age who want to learn more about Che Guevara and the political unrest of the 1950’s and 60’s (GS).

El libro comienza con un resumen de la vida del Che y crea las bases para el resto del libro al describir la vida intrincada que él vivió. El libro abarca las diferentes etapas de su vida, desde su crianza hasta su muerte en Bolivia; además, el texto elabora sobre el aura enigmática que continua rodeando a este personaje hoy en día. Este libro está lleno de fotos reales de Guevara durante sus campañas militares y discursos famosos, lo que ayuda al lector a tener un mejor entendimiento de las condiciones bajo las cuales vivió el Che. Este libro provee información sobre América Latina y la cultura cubana para describir las circunstancias relativas a la revolución cubana, además de otras revoluciones comunistas. A Mummy in Her Backpack/ Una momia en su mochila is a bilingual book about a young girl, Flor, who finds a surprise in her backpack upon returning from a trip to Guanajuato, Mexico. Returning to school after her vacation, she discovers a mummy named Rafael, who hid in her backpack during her visit to a mummy museum. Rafael, or “Rafa” as Flor and her friend Lupita call him, always wanted to visit the United States. He immediately regrets his decision, however, when he realizes that he will miss the Day of the Dead. With help from the school custodian, Mr. García, Flor and Lupita decide to return Rafa to his home before the Day of the Dead. After overcoming many obstacles that stand in their way, they eventually work everything out. It is a good translation, however it is clear that the story was written in English and translated into Spanish. A Mummy in Her Backpack is a good book that describes the Day of the Dead, and is appropriate for ages 8-11. (AS)

A Mummy in Her Backpack/ Una momia en su mochila es un libro ­bilingüe sobre una niña llamada Flor, quien descubre que una momia llamada Rafael se escondió en su mochila durante su visita al museo en México. Rafael, o “Rafa” como Flor y su amiga Lupita le llaman, siempre había querido visitar los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, Rafa lamenta su decisión impulsiva cuando se da cuenta que no estará en el museo durante el Día de los Muertos, día festivo cuando su familia visita a Rafa en el museo. Con la ayuda del guardián de la escuela, el señor García, Flor y Lupita deciden ayudar a Rafa a que regrese a su casa antes del Día de los Muertos. El texto original fue escrito en inglés, lo que se percibe en la traducción al español, la cual carece de las ilustraciones que sólo aparecen en la versión en inglés. A Mummy in Her Backpack/ Una momia en su mochila es un buen libro sobre el Día de los Muertos, apropiado para niños que tienen 8-11 años. (AS)

The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano is a fiction novel about a Puerto Rican girl, Rosa María Evelyn del Carmen Serrano, called “Evelyn”, living in El Barrio, a Spanish Harlem neighborhood in 1969 New York. In the beginning of the novel, Evelyn goes to work at the Five-and-Dime near her house, both to get away from her family and to prove her self-worth. Throughout the book, she reconsiders her identity with the arrival of her grandmother, a revolutionary at heart, and the “Young Lords,” a group of young people trying to change East Harlem. She is involved in their occupation of a local church, in order to gain the space for a free clinic and to serve breakfast to local children. As she sees the work these people are putting in to changing the community, she starts to see her place in the world in a different light. The book is written in English with some Spanish (Puerto Rican Spanish) words scattered in, which add to the atmosphere of the book. Aimed at 5th through 7th graders, it is a good book for teaching students to accept their heritage, but also forge their own identity within it. It is also a good book to teach readers about the history of Puerto Ricans in New York. (CS)

The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano es una novela sobre una chica puertorriqueña, Rosa María Evelyn del Carmen Serrano, “Evelyn”, que vive en El Barrio, un barrio hispano de Harlem en Nueva York durante 1969. Al inicio del libro Evelyn trabaja en la tienda Cinco y Diez cerca de su casa para escapar de su familia y demostrarse a sí misma que es alguien importante. A través del libro, ella reconsidera su identidad con la llegada de su abuela, una revolucionaria, y los “Young Lords”, un grupo de jóvenes que trata de cambiar la situación en East Harlem. Ella se involucra en la ocupación de una iglesia para crear un dispensario y servir desayuno a los niños del barrio. Cuando Evelyn nota el trabajo de la gente para mejorar la comunidad, ella percibe su lugar en la vida de una manera diferente. Este libro está escrito en inglés con algunas palabras en español (español puertorriqueño), que contribuyen a la atmósfera del libro pero no lo convierten en un texto bilingüe. From sunlit leaves to spring blossoms, there is always something to appreciate about the glories of the seasons. From majestic mountains to brown deserts, there is always something to appreciate about the colors and the varied landscapes of our shared home. Along with the beautiful photographs, this simple poem is lovely and short enough to be a perfect storytime choice. When they read this picture book, kids can see why there is so much to love about our earth. (KRR)

Carlos and his friends have fun playing with cars when he is able to write this word, but Carlos still wants to learn how to write his complete name. He asks his mom for help again, and this time she teaches him the rest of the letters to his name. After a lot of practice, Carlos is finally able to write his name all on his own, and is proud when he shows his friends his new skill. The story concludes with follow-up questions that will motivate children to learn how to write their own names and to keep practicing so that they will be able to write other words as well. Recommended for children ages 5-7. (RG)

In the end, Roberto’s journey leads him into the woods where he is greeted with a wonderful birthday surprise! This book teaches kids about different cultural traditions and ways of celebrating. The illustrations are bright, colorful, and feature playful little monsters hidden throughout the pictures. This text will be great for young children of both English and Spanish speaking backgrounds. (KW)

This book is a creative story for young children ages 5-8 who love fictional creatures (and tacos). It includes colorful illustrations on each page and a variety of different dragons. (ES)

The book begins with a girl, Estela, who thinks that dancing is silly when she is watching her neighbors, but eventually learns that dancing is very enjoyable. The story starts when Estela convinces her mother to attend let her a dance class. Estela’s mom then encourages her to dance salsa with the women. She quickly becomes excited about salsa in this sweet story. When Estela is faced with losing salsa, she petitions for it to be a part of her life as well as the lives of her classmates. This book is written in the perfect style to make the point that exercising can be fun. The fact that Estela encourages her mom to attend the class shows that dance is for everybody. The book is in both English and Spanish so it will be good for bilingual families and children who are learning to read and talk in another language. Let’s Salsa is a good book for kids ages 6-10, which teaches that a healthy lifestyle change that can be for everybody. (ML)

Bailemos Salsa por Lupe Ruiz-Flores es una historia perfecta para mostrar a los niños que pueden divertirse mientras hacen ejercicio. El libro empieza con Estela, una niña que piensa que el baile es una cosa cómica para ver cuando está mirando a sus vecinos, pero aprende que bailar es muy agradable. Estela convence a su madre para que asista a la clase de baile. Entonces, su madre la anima a bailar salsa con el grupo de vecinas. Cuando Estela confronta la idea de quedarse sin la clase de salsa, ella se moviliza para convertir la clase en una actividad escolar que beneficie a sus compañeros. Este libro está escrito en la manera perfecta para enfatizar que el objetivo de hacer ejercicio puede ser muy divertido. Es bueno que Estela anime a su madre a asistir a la clase de salsa porque muestra que el baile es para todos. También, el libro está en inglés y español, por lo que es un buen material para familias bilingües y niños que están aprendiendo a leer y hablar en otro idioma. In Lupe Ruiz Flores’ Lupita’s First Dance, a young girl learns about overcoming disappointment. In this bilingual book for young readers, a first grade class celebrates Children’s Day by performing La Raspa, a Mexican folk dance. Lupita and her classmate, Ernesto, prepare together for the big day, but on the day of the performance, Ernesto can’t perform. Lupita is very disappointed to hear the news, so she goes onto the stage on an impulse and dances by herself with the other children. She is very happy and is later encouraged for dancing by her teacher and her parents. The story does an excellent job of depicting a positive outcome in spite of unexpected disappointment, but oddly it does not address the injured Ernesto. While overcoming disappointment is an important lesson for any young child, caring for others is also important. The book honors length and focuses on the plot, which is important for keeping the attention of the young target audience, but Ernesto’s plotline seems neglected.This book is recommended for young children to read with adults. En Lupe Ruiz Flores’ El Primer Baile de Lupita, una niña aprende a salir adelante cuando las cosas no salen bien. Lupita y su compañero de clases, Ernesto, van a celebrar el Día del Niño con ‘La Raspa’, un baile mexicano tradicional. Ellos practican mucho, pero el día de la presentación, Ernesto no puede participar. Lupita se siente muy decepcionada, pero decide ir al escenario y bailar sin pareja junto al resto de los niños. Al final de la historia, Lupita se siente muy feliz por tomar esta decisión y recibe felicitaciones de sus padres y su maestra. El libro da un buen ejemplo sobre cómo reaccionar ante un evento inesperado, pero no repara en la situación inesperada Ernesto. Aunque el libro trata de ser conciso y concentrar la historia en el personaje de Lupita para adecuarse al público joven al que se dirige, hubiera sido importante referirse a la situación de Ernesto y la importancia de preocuparse por los demás. Este es un libro bilingüe que puede ser leído en voz alta por adultos a niños de una clase de primer grado. (JJ)

Dancing with the devil: and other tales from beyond is a bilingual collection of six short stories based on old Latin American folktales. Each story has a supernatural twist on seemingly ordinary events in the lives of six different pre-teens living in southern Texas. In “Dancing with the devil”, Joey asks Marlene, the love of his life, to the middle school dance. However, when he arrives at the dance he finds her dancing with a suave, well-dressed stranger with fire in his eyes. In “Have I got a marble for you” Felipe needs the perfect marble to win the Peñitas Marble Championship and beat his long-time rival, Toño. But when a strange boy offers him the ultimate marble in exchange for payment to his mother, Felipe soon finds out he has a lot more to worry about than just winning a marble contest. In these and other short stories, Saldaña does a wonderful job of bringing ancient Latin American folklore to the modern reader. This book is a great read for middle school children who will be able to relate to the characters and will love the creepy plot twists. Written in both Spanish and English, this book would be a fun tool to use in beginner to intermediate level Spanish classes to help students learn about some aspects of Latino culture as well as practice their Spanish reading comprehension skills. Dancing with the devil: and other tales from beyond es una colección bilingüe de seis cuentos basados en cuentos latinoamericanos tradicionales. Cada cuento tiene un giro inesperado y sobrenatural en eventos que parecen normales al principio en la vida de seis preadolescentes del sur de Texas. En el cuento “Bailando con el diablo”, Joey pide a Marlene, el amor de su vida, que le acompañe al baile de secundaria. The store’s previous owner, Mr. Blackwater, leaves to confront his past as a Civil War soldier, but leaves his cat named General Grant and his bugle in Beth Delilah’s care. Elijah and Beth Delilah become friends and join one another on adventures with the bugle and General Grant. They watch the eccentric customers of the store and explore the mountains near Ruidoso with their friend from the Apache tribe, Feather, and his grandfather. They also encounter Señora Roja, the woman rumored to be the village witch, and the girl who comes to live with her. Beth Delilah and Elijah grow up and experience the good and evil in the world in this tale of magical realism. The book has many Spanish words and vivid illustrations of the characters. It’s an accumulative story that builds on itself, adding to the original sentences from the beginning of the story. The story adds more ingredients on each page for the arroz con leche, and in the end of the book there is a recipe to make the arroz con leche. This book is perfect for kids, and a great way to teach kids Spanish. It is simple to read that is great choice for beginning Spanish readers. (KS)
