Russian Studies

The interdisciplinary major and minor in Russian Studies combines Russian language study with coursework in other disciplines, including religion, history, literature, film, foreign culture, women and gender studies, and international studies.

A Russian Studies major requires a student to successfully complete three years of language study, including a semester abroad in Russia. In addition, a student must successfully complete three elective courses from approved Russian Studies course offerings.

The Russian Studies minor may be pursued in conjunction with any major of the student’s choice. Students should consult with the faculty of departments of interest. Courses normally do not count for both a major and a minor. A student is also required to successfully complete two years of Russian language study. The program has a coordinator who advises students and faculty on curriculum matters.

The Russian Studies Program at Luther is truly unique, and has granted me global opportunities I would never have otherwise experienced. The department’s blend of language, culture, and history granted me the necessary tools I needed to not only explore a deeper understanding of global cultures, but to also confidently and proficiently speak the world’s eighth most spoken language.
