The Aguilar-Pizer Family Study Abroad Scholarship, established by Anthony Pizer '03 and Jessica Aguilar '03, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance to be used for a study abroad experience.

The Anderson Family Scholarship shall be awarded for study away from campus to qualified junior or senior students demonstrating financial need and/or extraordinary potential who are considering careers in public service or non-governmental public service. First priority would be for students involved in study in Washington, D.C., or at another location where opportunities exist to acquire education of particular value to future positions in public service.

The Dr. Ronald and Lorna Anderson Scholarship, established by Jim '85 and Martha (Anderson) Looft '83, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance to support J-term or semester long study abroad experiences while at Luther College.

The Synneva Hella Anderson Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established to encourage the exchange of students and study opportunities between Luther College and Norway.

The Babine-Kleene Scholarship, established by Barbara (Kleene) '72 and Rev. Daniel Babine, along with Phyllis and Kermit Kleene (in memoriam), shall be awarded to deserving first-generation students who wish to study abroad during their junior or senior years. The scholarship is open to students from all disciplines, with preference given to those pursuing degrees in any helping profession, i.e. teaching, theology/religion, medicine, etc.

The Barbara Bahe Endowed Scholarship Fund, established by friends, colleagues, and former students of Barbara Bahe, in appreciation of Barbara, for her life of devotion and dedication to Luther College, where she taught for over thirty years. The scholarship shall be awarded to a native-speaking German student from a university in Germany, Austria, or German-speaking Switzerland to attend Luther College, or to a Luther student to study in a German-speaking country.

The Charles and Ann Beatty Family Global Learning Scholarship, established by the Beatty Family to promote student mobility, cross cultural learning, and global citizenry, shall be awarded to qualified students with preference given to students studying abroad for the first time.

The Marion and Peggy Beatty Family Scholarship, established by Peggy (Hall) Beatty '74, shall be awarded to qualified students who are studying abroad. Students are encouraged to be citizens of the world (ambassadors), interacting with local people/cultures in addition to their studies. During and/or at the conclusion of their study abroad, students are encouraged to reflect on their experience and share their reflections in writing, or as a program for other students, their home congregation, a local civic group, or with the scholarship's benefactor.

The Carol J. Birkland Scholarship, established by Carol Birkland, class of 1967 and her husband, Thomas Woxland, to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of financial need with first preference given to members of Nordic Choir to enable them to participate on music tours abroad.

The Susan Maclay Blackman Fellowship for Study Abroad, established by Susan (Maclay) Blackman '64, shall be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of financial need, for study in a developing region of the world (Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, or Latin America).

The Dr. Nancy Bluemel Study Abroad Scholarship, established by Nancy (Larson) Bluemel '62, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance for a study abroad experience while at Luther.

The Ruth Caldwell and Uwe Rudolf Studies Abroad Scholarship, established by Ruth Caldwell and Uwe Rudolf, shall be awarded to qualified students based upon their demonstration of financial need and/or their exceptional academic standing who are seeking study abroad opportunities in French speaking countries. In a year where there are no students who plan to study in a French speaking country, consideration may be given to students who qualified for study abroad programs in other countries.

The Calgaard Study Abroad Scholarship, established by Gene (Flom) '58 and Ron Calgaard '59, shall be awarded to students with financial need in support of their Luther College study-abroad educational experience. Upper class students shall have preference for these awards.

The Catlin-Totten Study Away Scholarship, established by Joan (Catlin) '63 and David Totten, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance to be used for a study-away experience. Preference shall be given to students majoring in Social Work. This fund is meant to support credit-based study away opportunities related to the social work major, including required field experience courses, and may be used for both US-based and non-US based programs.

The Giuseppe and Ellen (Woodard) Colletta Fund for International Studies, established by Ellen Woodard-Colletta '82 through Thrivent Charitable Impact and Investing, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance, to be used for a study-abroad experience.

The Lori Beckman Conway Endowed Scholarship, established by Lori Beckman '83, shall be awarded to qualified students in need of financial assistance, with preference given to Norwegian language or Scandinavian Studies majors. If none are available, the scholarship can be awarded to students in other majors who wish to study abroad in a Scandinavian country.

The Thor and Wendy Davidson Study Abroad Scholarship, established by Thor '93 and Wendy (Jaycox) Davidson '92, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance to support study abroad experiences.

The Olga Fischer-Proehl International Studies Scholarship, established by Jutta F. Anderson in honor of her mother, Olga Fischer-Proehl, a German business woman of great strength, courage, and perseverance who accepted an extraordinary challenge when her husband suddenly died during early post WWII years and when there were three children under twelve to be raised. She decided to continue running the foundry, Uerdinger Metallwerke Wilhelm Fischer, which the couple had started in the late thirties. She did so successfully for the next three decades. The scholarship shall be awarded to a woman student majoring in International Studies (for use during the junior or senior year). The scholarship shall be used to offset the additional tuition and fees incurred as a result of a semester abroad immersion experience required of all International Studies majors. This scholarship is intended to support an outstanding International Studies major who demonstrates intellectual curiosity, cultural sensitivity, maturity, and an eagerness to explore connections among an increasingly interconnected world.

The Jim and Judy Fogdall Nursing Challenge Scholarship, established by James '64 and Judith (Larson) Fogdall '65, shall be awarded to qualified junior nursing majors participating in the Rochester semester, to offset expenses associated with the clinical year experience.

The Friends of International Touring Scholarship, established by alumni and friends of the college in appreciation of the quality of the academic music program and the importance of ensemble performance and international touring, shall be awarded to students who are full members in Concert Band, Jazz Orchestra, Nordic Choir, or Symphony Orchestra, who desire to travel internationally (on a scheduled ensemble tour) and who would be unable to without assistance in covering authorized travel costs. Students may be selected whether or not they have a formal designated financial need, but must be recommended in writing and with reason to the director of financial aid by the respective ensemble director.

The Ingeborg Goessl Study Abroad Scholarship, established by Ingeborg (Bader) Goessl '60, shall be awarded to qualified students, with preference given to students with a demonstrated need for financial assistance, who desire to study abroad. Students will be selected based on: a) German majors/minors (especially future German teachers) wishing to study abroad or experience an internship in a German speaking country; b) Students of other majors wishing to study in a German speaking country. During residency abroad the recipient must be enrolled in an approved course of study at an accredited institution. If no qualified applicants apply to study abroad, the scholarship may be awarded to a qualified German major or minor.

The Alma Everlyn Gray Study Abroad Scholarship, established by Phyllis Gray '73, shall be awarded to qualified, high-need U.S. students eligible for the college's diversity scholarship to assist with the opportunity to participate in study-abroad programs.

The Dayton J. and Amy O. Henderson Study Abroad Scholarship, established by Dayton '79 and Amy Henderson, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance to be used for a study-abroad experience.

The Fay M. Henning-Bryant '64 and Delano E. Bryant Concert Band International Touring Scholarship, established by Fay Henning-Bryant '64, shall be awarded to students who are full members of the Luther College Concert Band who desire to travel internationally with the band and who would be unable to without assistance in covering authorized travel costs. Students are selected based on a demonstrated need for financial assistance, or whose financial circumstances would prevent them from going on an international tour.

The Lars and Niels Herrmann-Anderson Scholarship, established by Jutta F. Anderson, shall be awarded to students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance and are participating in a study-abroad experience for a January-term.

The William and Norma Hervey Study Abroad Scholarship, established by Norma Hervey, professor emerita, shall be awarded to qualified students, with or without a demonstrated need for financial assistance, who demonstrate academic excellence with a minimum 3.0 grade point average for a study abroad experience. Preference shall be given to students who are U.S. Citizens.

The Lois Hill Studies Abroad Scholarship, established by Lois Hill '85, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance who wish to participate in a study abroad program.

The Hogenson Family Scholarship, established by Alice (Hogenson) Kienberger-Iverson '54 in honor of her parents, George and Bertha Hogenson, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance participating in a study-abroad experience, with first preference given to students majoring in music.

The J-Term International Study Scholarship, established by David Pendergast '02, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance, with preference given to students who (a) committed to a January-term study abroad trip through Luther College or otherwise, (b) have not previously traveled outside the United States, and (c) have demonstrated a multicultural understanding and a liberal worldview during the course of their studies at Luther College.

The Kintzinger Family Rochester Semester Scholarship, established through the estate of Jewel W. Kintzinger, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance taking part in the Rochester Semester program. Should the Rochester Semester program cease to exist, this fund shall support students participating in similar study away opportunities or programs.

The Philip H. and Jodi L. (Anderson) Kruger Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of Phil '00 and Jodi (Anderson) Kruger '00 by their parents to honor their areas of study and the fact that they met during a study-away program. The scholarship shall be awarded to qualified students based upon high academic achievement and majoring in either accounting or management, with additional preference for students involved in study-away programs.

The Eric and Jennifer Lahaie Study Abroad Scholarship, established by Jennifer (Filteau) '99 and Eric Lahaie '00, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance who desire to study abroad. First preference shall be given to students wishing to study on an accredited and approved program in Africa.

The Madeleine Langrand and André Thélia Memorial Fund for French Studies, established by Michel Thélia in order to encourage the exchange of students and study opportunities between Luther College and French-speaking universities. The scholarship shall be awarded to support a qualified student who wishes to spend a semester or year of study in France in an exchange program with a qualified French-speaking student who would study at Luther College. The selection of the student(s) shall be made by a committee of the department of modern languages French division.

The Luther College Global Partners Scholarship, established in part by Ruth N. Fjelstad, professor emerita of Spanish. After serving as a teacher and mentor to so many students at Luther for 35 years, it is appropriate, indeed, that Ruth continues her commitment to connecting students to the broader world through this generous gift. This scholarship (GPS) is designed to foster increased meaningful learning experiences for Luther students around the world. The scholarship shall be awarded to support proposed credit or non-credit engaged learning experiences outside the United States for qualified students, with or without a demonstrated need for financial assistance. The awards are open to students of any major, and shall be awarded to students irrespective of the term in which they are abroad or the length of their involvement, in recognition that meaningful learning may occur in shorter duration, highly impactful experiences.

The Luther College Rochester Semester Scholarship shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated financial need for financial assistance, taking part in the Rochester Semester program. The Luther College Rochester Semester is a dynamic blend of courses and internships. Launched as part of the Inspired.Empowered.Engaged. Strategic Plan 2018-2023, this program is intended to take advantage of the exciting opportunities available a mere 65 miles to the north of Decorah. It provides a platform for students to engage in high-impact, career-related experiential learning. Drawing on the college’s expansive alumni base in the area, students will have unique access to immersive learning opportunities designed to help them discern their callings; acquire concrete, job-related experience; and facilitate career networking.

The Luther College Symphony Orchestra Vienna Residency Scholarship, established by faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Luther College Symphony Orchestra, shall be awarded to qualified members of the LCSO who desire to travel internattionally as part of the Vienna Residency program, and who would be unable to attend without assistance in covering authorized costs of the program. The Luther College Symphony Orchestra celebrated its 50th anniversary during the 2019-2020 academic year (first organized in 1877, but revived in 1970 with a full-time director). During the fifty years since its first performance in 1970, hundreds of Luther College musicians have given themselves--time, energy, talent, body and soul--to the ensemble. Every four years since 1977, over 80 Luther student musicians live, practice, and perform for three weeks during the month of January as part of the Vienna Residency Program. This residency includes daily rehearsals and coursework, often on current and historic aspects of Vienna, led by Luther professors. While music is at the heart and soul of the residency, Luther students also experience some distinctive Viennese traditions, as well as side trips to Prague, Budapest, and Salzburg. This endowment will ensure this unique experience is available to all talented, committed student musicians, regardless of financial circumstance.

The Melin International Studies Scholarship, established by John '70 and Barbara Melin and Bennett Melin,shall be awarded to one student majoring in International Studies, to manage and meet expenses related to tuition, travel, room and board, and living expenses while abroad. While the award shall be given to students with or without regard to demonstrated financial need, preference shall be given to students with financial need and who otherwise would not be able to afford the study abroad experience. The members of the International Studies Board shall elect one recipient, by application and interview, annually. First preference shall be given to an International Studies major undertaking an academic year, semester, or semester and a summer study in Africa, with further preference given to study in sub-Saharan African nations, such as Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, eSwatini (Swaziland), Tanzania, etc. If no eligible International Studies majors are identified, second preference shall be given to students of any major engaged in similar study (as described above) in Africa.

The Corey and Suzanne (Roverud) Mineck Scholarship, established by Suzanne (Roverud) '96 and Corey Mineck, shall be awarded to qualified students who wish to study abroad, or travel abroad, on an approved Luther College academic program, and whose financial circumstances prohibit them from realizing this goal.

The John H. Monson Endowed Fund for International Education, established by Tom '77 and Ann (Johnson) Monson '78 in honor of John H. Monson for his distinguished career in international education and for his life-long dedication to students and teachers and their communities throughout the world. His commitment to international education and his highly respected expertise provided many Luther students with countless opportunities to enhance their own teaching and leadership skills. John and his wife, Ruth, raised three children who are all graduates of Luther College: Kristine '72, Martha '75, and Tom '77. The scholarship shall be awarded to worthy and deserving students who are pursuing a major or minor in education with an interest in an international teaching and multi-cultural experience. The scholarship helps to support those students who participate in a study-abroad student teaching practicum experience.

The Dean and Barbara Nelson Study Abroad Scholarship, established by Dean '69 and Barbara Nelson, shall be awarded to qualified students who wish to study abroad on an approved Luther College academic program (year-long, semester, summer, or January-term) and whose financial circumstances prohibit them from realizing this goal. The scholarship shall benefit students with demonstrated need for financial assistance, with first preference given to students who graduated from Decorah High School.

The Nottingham Alumni Scholarship, established by Nottingham program alumni, shall be awarded to qualified students, without regard to financial need, participating in the Nottingham Program. If in any given year, a qualified student is not available, or if the Nottingham Program is discontinued, awards may be directed to support students participating in a study-abroad program experience. The Nottingham Program at Luther began during the 1972-1973 academic year. This scholarship honors faculty, staff, and students who have participated in the program.

The George and Carole Orness Study Abroad Scholarship, established by George '67 and Carole (Rust) Orness '69, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance to be used for a study-abroad experience.

The Nicolas Remfrey Memorial Scholarship, established by Brian '98 and April (Johnson) Remfrey '98, shall be awarded to qualified students majoring in a modern language to be used for a study abroad experience in a country where the language that the student is majoring in is spoken.

The Loyal and Marilyn Rue Study Abroad Scholarship, established by the 1977-1978 Nottingham Program Alumni in honor and in celebration of Loyal and Marilyn Rue. The Rues have twice led the Luther College Nottingham Program, the first in 1977-78 and the second in 2001-02. The Rues have had a career-long dedication to Luther College and are deeply committed to helping Luther students study abroad. The scholarship shall be awarded to students with demonstrated need for financial assistance who wish to study abroad on an approved Luther College academic program.

The Sathe Scholars Study Abroad Scholarship, part of the Robert and Dell Ann Sathe Scholars Endowments, established by Robert '68 and Dell Ann (Kappus) Sathe '68, shall be awarded to qualified underprivileged students (first-generation, low-income, etc.) with demonstrated need for financial assistance to be used for a study-abroad experience.

The Steven B. Schaver Spanish Studies Scholarship, established by Steven Schaver '76, shall be awarded based on: sixty percent (60%) of the annual spending allowance will support accepted and enrolled Latino/Hispanic students who are low-income and/or first generation that demonstrate academic potential for success; and, forty percent (40%) of the annual spending allowance shall support students, with or without regard to financial need, participating in the Spanish program who plan to study abroad to build Spanish language skills. First preference shall be given to students with demonstrated need for financial assistance majoring or minoring in Spanish.

The Tonya and Corey Schmidt Study Abroad Scholarship, established by Tonya (Schwers) '97 and Corey Schmidt '98, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance to be used for a study abroad experience.

The Six Leaves Study Abroad Scholarship, established by John '59 and Dorothy Brugge, the name of which is derived from the number of leaves in the Brugge dining room table, where members of the Brugge family and friends of Luther College often gather. The scholarship shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance to be used for a study abroad experience.

The Ruth Steinmetz Center for Global Learning Scholarship, established through the estate of Ruth Steinmetz, in appreciation of Ruth's long term friendship with Luther connections: Maynard and Minerva Aaker, Frank and Marge Barth, and development staff members of the college. The scholarship shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance participating in study abroad programs.

The Mark Strohbehn Study Away Scholarship, established by Mary Strohbehn '07 and Aaron Jost, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance to be used for a study away experience. Preference shall be given to students studying abroad majoring in political science, international studies, or a related field.

The Torgerson Nordic Studies Summer ISS Student Scholarship, established by Rick and Judy Torgerson, provides support for students to attend and study at the University of Oslo during the summer.

The Judy Torgerson Study Abroad Scholarship, established by alumni and friends in appreciation of the dedication and service of Judy Torgerson to the Luther College academic experience--most especially the international academic experience--and the resulting influence it has had on the lives of thousands of students and alumni. The scholarship shall be awarded to qualified students who desire to take part in a Luther College study abroad program, with or without regard to demonstrated need, who due to financial circumstances might otherwise not be able to study internationally. The scholarship may support recipients for a year-long, semester, or January-term experience.

The Ella Valborg Rolvaag Tweet Scholarship in Scandinavian Studies, established by Ella Tweet, shall be awarded to qualified students showing evidence of need for financial assistance enrolled in Norwegian language and Scandinavian Studies. Special preference shall be given for students to study in Norway.

The Wigeland/American-Scandinavian Foundation Scholarship, established through the estate of G. Norman Wigeland in conjunction with the American-Scandinavian Foundation, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance to study abroad in Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden).

The Larry and Jane Lee Winter Study Abroad Scholarship, established by Larry '83 and Jane Lee Winter, shall be awarded to qualified students participating in a study abroad program who have demonstrated need for financial assistance.

The Bruce and Amy Wrightsman Scholarship, established by Amy (Mueller) Wrightsman '01 in memory of her husband, Bruce Wrightsman, who devoted his life to teaching and helping others and who had a special interest in and led numerous student study trips to the U.S.S.R./Russia and Eastern Europe. The scholarship shall be awarded to qualified students who are participating in Luther's study abroad program, for those students studying in the area currently known as Russia.

The Xie Family Scholarship for Global Experience, established by Enwei Xie '94, shall be awarded to qualified international students with demonstrated need for financial assistance, and/or, to qualified students wishing to study abroad.
