Wild Horse Scientists is a captivating read on a subject not studied by many: wild horse contraception. The book follows the story of the wildlife reproductive physiologist Dr. Jay Kirkpatrick’s exciting, but at many times frustrating, ride to success. It focuses around his research on a hidden niche along the Atlantic coast in Maryland, Assateague Island, with permission and help from the National Park Service. Kay Frydenborg’s book also reveals the fascinating history of wild horses and what has led to current research in an easy-to-read, informative style with astonishing photography. Anyone interested in a quick read filled with information about history, biology, and even anthropology should try this book. Ages 10-13 is a rough guideline of which audience is targeted. The amount of knowledge stuffed inside is quite surprising and perfect for an older group, but the pictures are an excellent way to follow along for a younger crowd. (AW)
