Welcome to the 2017 blog of Classics 299: Ancient Greece: An Odyssey of Myth and History! We are so excited to document our travels and hope you join us on our journey. This blog is designed to keep friends and family in the know during our trip. First, we will introduce ourselves to you readers, as we are the designated "blog goddesses" who are in charge of synopsizing our trip. Alaina Kittrell

Hi there! My name is Alaina Kittrell, and I am a senior Communication Studies major and Classical Studies minor. I am a member of the Tau Delta Gamma sorority and Communication Studies club here on campus. Traveling is something I am very passionate about, as this is my third time studying abroad with Luther! In my spare time I love to binge watch Netflix with my roommate and going to the Humane Society cat room. I am so excited to travel to Greece and be immersed in its lengthy and colorful history!

Brynne Stellner

Hello! My name is Brynne Stellner, and I am a senior English major with a minor in secondary education. I was off-campus this fall in Rochester, MN where I completed my student teaching practicum. I was placed at Mayo High School teaching 10th and 11th grade students and Kellogg Middle School teaching 7th and 8th grade students. It was a rewarding experience, and I'm thrilled to use this course in my own English classroom! Beyond education related activities, I've also had wonderful experiences as a member of Luther College Women's Basketball Team, working in the admissions office, and various other activites. After J-term, I'm looking forward to spending one last semester with my sister, Marin who joined the Norse family this fall.

Course Overview

This course, taught completely in Greece, will explore the mythology and history of ancient Greece (hence, the "blog goddess" nickname :-) ). From the mountainous island region of Crete to the bustling city of Athens and everywhere in between, we will be exploring ancient ruins sites that gave rise to the popular myths we know today. The course will also explore the dynamics of myth and history, the numerous ways that ancient Greek cities relied on oral histories and mythologies to construct identities, and the ways in which myth influenced the artists of the Renaissance and Romantic period.

Over the course of the trip, we will be traveling to numerous locations, which include: Crete, Athens, Delphi, Corinth, Mycenae, Tyrins, Argos, and Olympia. There are 22 participants eager to touch down on Greek soil, and behalf of them, we hope you experience this trip with us every step of the way.
