Nancy (Theiler) Albrecht '78 Memorial Fellowship in Biology

Established by Rick Theiler ’72, this fund is named in memory of Nancy (Theiler) Albrecht, class of 1978, an honors biology student at Luther College who went on to pursue a career in toxicology testing with what is today part of Covance Laboratories. She entered God's eternal kingdom at the age of 49, following a heroic battle with breast cancer. The fellowship is awarded annually to an academically high achieving biology student planning to seek an advanced degree in biology research or in medicine -- ideally, but not limited to, someone interested in cancer research, biomedical research in cellular regulation, gene regulation, or genetics.

Vernon H. Bahr Research Scholars Endowment

Established by Jan M. Larson in honor of her father, Vernon H. Bahr, class of 1950, who served as a member of the biology faculty at Luther College for many years, to be used to support students majoring in biology to enable them to engage in student/faculty collaborative research. (Deferred Fund)

Ruth Benson Student Research Fund

Established through the estate of Ruth T. Benson, these funds were designated for the purposes of funding student research by action of the Luther College Board of Regents in May 2009. May this research fund and the students who research is supported through it be lasting reflections of the generosity of Ruth Benson.

Warren and Maryellen (Amundson) Boe Student/Faculty Research Fellowship

Established by Warren '60 and Maryellen (Amundson) Boe '61 in appreciation for the Luther College experience afforded to family members, this fellowship shall support promising students in mathematics, computer science, or physics who are engaged in faculty-supervised research projects throughout the academic year or in the summer months. 

Ruth Caldwell and Uwe Rudolf Endowed Student Research Fellowship in Business and Economics

Established by David W. Carlson ’85, in honor of Ruth Caldwell and Uwe Rudolf for their dedicated service to Luther College and to their students in the Modern Languages and in Business and Economics, this fund supports at least one student research opportunity to develop their abilities as independent and collaborative researchers. Preference is given to students in Business and Economics.

Established by David W. Carlson ’85, in honor of Ruth Caldwell and Uwe Rudolf for their dedicated service to Luther College and to their students in the Modern Languages and in Business and Economics, this fund supports at least one student research opportunity to develop their abilities as independent and collaborative researchers. Preference is given to students in Modern Languages, particularly French.

Barbara Fuller, M.D. Biology Research Fund

Established by Barbara Fuller, M.D. '72, this fund supports promising students majoring in biology to allow them to engage in student/faculty collaborative research during the summer. (Current Fund)

Imagine Fellows Endowment Fund

Established by action of the Luther College Board of Regents, this fund supports the aims and objectives of the Imagine Fellows Program by supporting the academic and creative pursuit of each recipient. One fellowship award of $5,000 will be given to each Imagine Fellow, for use during the summer of the recipient's junior year, or as needed, during the junior or senior years.

Dr. David Chester Johnson Imagine Fellowship Fund

Established by Joan (Gunther) ’64 and Dick Niemiec in honor of Dr. David Chester Johnson, this fund supports the aims and objectives of the Imagine Fellows Program by supporting the academic and creative pursuit of each recipient. One fellowship award of $5,000 will be given to each Imagine Fellow, for use during the summer of the recipient's junior year, or as needed, during the junior or senior years.

Jakob and Clarice Larsen Endowment

Established through the estate of Jakob Larsen, class of 1908, one of the sons of Luther’s first president, Laur. Larsen, was Luther’s first Rhodes Scholar. He earned a Ph.D. in classics at Harvard and taught ancient history at the University of Chicago, this fund supports student/faculty collaborative research in ancient history and Classics.

Luther College Endowed Fellowship in Chemistry

Established by alumni and members of the Chemistry faculty to award annual research stipends to promising students who are majoring in Chemistry. These fellowships are to be used in support of chemistry research projects being conducted by students with the supervision of members of the chemistry faculty throughout the year with special emphasis to provide support for their research during the summer months.

Luther College English Scholars Endowment

Established by alumni and faculty in honor of the distinguished teaching careers of emeriti professors of English, John Bale, Dennis Jones, Martin and Mary Hull Mohr, and Harland Nelson. This endowment fund will help Luther's English faculty to teach and advise students in the tradition of the emeriti professors in whose honor it is established. It will also assist students as they engage with the larger world of English studies. In particular, this fund provides awards to support research experience for students and faculty members of the English department. This fund was formerly known as the Young Scholars Endowment in English.

Luther College Student Research Endowment Fund

Established by Neal ’59 and Gerry (Mosby) Nottleson ’59 to recognize the importance of undergraduate research in achieving its academic mission, this fund enhances these research programs and provides opportunities for Luther students to fully participate in individual and collaborative research projects as undergraduates.

Emil C. Miller Endowed Fund for Physics

Established by an anonymous friend and grateful student, who wishes to honor Emil C. Miller and his contribution to physics education, this fund provides either one or more student awards or for other physics department purposes as determined by the faculty of the Luther College physics department. 

Carolyn Mottley Chemistry Research Fellowship

Established by alumni and friends in deep appreciation for the inspired teaching and informed leadership of Dr. Carolyn Mottley after 40 years of service to Luther College, this fund supports student-faculty collaborative research in the department of chemistry.

Nottleson Family Imagine Fellowship Fund

Wayne Simonson Undergraduate Chemistry Research Fund

Established through the estate of Chester E. Simonson, in memory of Wayne Simonson, alumnus class of 1960, this fund supports collaborative research by students in the chemistry department.

Lynn Arthur and Mary Frost Steen Fellowship

Established by Lynn ’61 and Mary (Frost) Steen ’62 to expand opportunities for undergraduate research and investigation by supporting summer fellowships for student-initiated projects. This fund supports fellowships that will enable qualified students to undertake independent scholarship, investigation, or creative activities in any field related to their college studies. Fellowships are intended to encourage applicants to explore intellectual and creative interests beyond the classroom.

Thomsen Imagine Fellowship Fund
Established by James '86 and Kathy (Winter) Thomsen '85, this fund supports the aims and objectives of the Imagine Fellows Program by supporting the academic and creative pursuit of each recipient. One fellowship award of $5,000 will be given to each Imagine Fellow, for use during the summer of the recipient's junior year, or as needed, during the junior or senior years.

John Tjostem Undergraduate Research Fund

Established through the generosity of colleagues, alumni, and friends of Luther College to honor Dr. John Tjostem, microbiologist and professor in the Luther College biology department from 1968 to 2000, who actively involved Luther students in research projects focusing upon well water analysis, Lyme disease, and food-borne illness. This fund provides support to promote and strengthen undergraduate research in the biology department.

Torgerson Student/Faculty Research Fellowship

Established through the generous support of alumni and friends of the college in honor of Rick and Judy Torgerson, celebrating the retirement of President Richard L. Torgerson, Luther's ninth president, serving from 1999-2013. This fund is in recognition of Luther's mission, and affirmation that independent collaborative research between students and mentors is a catalyst for igniting academic discovery and inquiry, and in appreciation of the many ways in which Rick and Judy Torgerson advocated and encouraged student/faculty research opportunities.
