Being Community updates

Alert Level 1 Green
Luther College has increased to Level 1 Green from Level 0 Blue. Face masks are now required in classrooms, laboratories, and studios, as well as during individual appointments with students in enclosed, personal faculty and staff offices. The residence halls are now at Phase 3 of the guest/visitor policy. View additional details here.

Testing for employees
If you are a faculty or staff member and are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, tests are available on weekdays by contacting Winneshiek Medical Center (WMC) or Gundersen. Take home tests are also available through Winneshiek County Public Health. WMC is also now offering rapid PCR tests on the weekends. Tests are available Saturdays and Sundays at 8-10 a.m. by appointment. Call WMC at 563-382-2911 between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. on either day to be added to the testing schedule.

President Ward hosts office hours

In an effort to stay connected with faculty and staff, and provide opportunities for discussion, President Ward will host a series of office hours. Attendance is limited to eight people per session due to the size of the meeting space. Sign up with Tara Quass, exec. asst. to the Office of the President, <quasta01>. Additional opportunities will be announced in the near future.

December staff meeting

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 9–10:30 a.m. in Peace Dining Room. The December all staff meeting will begin with the announcement of the 2021 Staff Excellence Award recipients. The remainder of the meeting will be centered around holiday festivities that will be filled with joy, smiles, laughter, and good food.

No plastic bags in recycling please

Norse recyclers, please do not put any plastic bags, plastic sheeting, Amazon plastic envelopes, or bubble wrap in any recycling container on campus. Our local recycling program does not accept these, and they gum up their equipment. Thanks for reading signs on recycling containers, and practicing helpful recycling! Questions? Luther Works November support session

At 9-10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, in Mott. Luther Works is giving FREE JOURNALS with CAREER DEVELOPMENT resources to supervisors that attend our next Support Session (plus extras to gift their upperclassmen student workers). Miriam Skrade and Megan Grimm '22 will share 20 self-guided career development opportunities that student workers can work on toward their career and life development between other department specific tasks and projects. Safe Zone training

Become an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ population by attending Safe Zone training! Safe Zone training is an opportunity to learn about LGBTQIA+ identities, gender and sexuality, and examine prejudice and assumptions. After, you will receive a Safe Zone Trained sign to communicate to others that you are supportive of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Calling all nominations for student members on the new Student Title IX Advisory Group!

The purpose of the Luther College Student Title IX Advisory Group is to meet with the Title IX Coordinator (and at times team members) to review and provide feedback on relevant policies, interim supportive measures, education/prevention, and other relevant student concerns related to sexual misconduct. The Title IX office believes strongly in continual improvement and wants to hear the concerns of our students and the Luther community. The Student Title IX Advisory Group will not be part of any grievance process associated with the college. The group will meet every other month. Nominate a student!

Not Quite Free Lunch

Philanthropy Week Nov. 8-12

The Student Philanthropy Council and Development Office will host Philanthropy Week in the Union, Nov. 8-12 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day! Do you know of a student working on a class presentation? Do they need help narrowing down a topic or general feedback on content? Maybe they are hoping to improve their eye contact, movement, and overall poise. HR Open Enrollment Update:
Open enrollment is the annual opportunity to enroll in or make changes to health and dental plan elections. You do not need to do anything if you plan to remain on the current health and/or dental plan election. You must complete a Flexible Benefit 2022 Enrollment Form if you plan to participate in the health and/or dependent care flex plan(s) for 2022 (Flex enrollments plans do not roll forward to the next year). All forms are located here. Completed forms are due to the Human Resources office, Main 25, by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19. Please call human resources at 387-1415 if you have questions.

November Book Club "Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again"
For all who are curious, wondering, skeptical, or even cynical about the Bible—you are invited to join College Ministries in reading the book "Inspired" by Rachel Held Evans, a book about encountering the Bible on its own terms, not as a magic book, but as something far more captivating and confounding. We'll meet for conversation Tuesday evenings in November (time/location TBD). Copies of the book are available in the College Ministries Office for $10. Chapel this week

The November chapel theme is "Awake and Greet the New Morn." Psalm 108 says, "My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make melody. Awake, my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn...Your steadfast love is higher than the heavens, and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds." As you watch the seasons change, may the daily steadfast cycle of light rising and light setting reconnect us with God’s promises of life, peace, and love, dawning anew each day.

"Heathers: The Musical" Nov. 11-13

Live theatre is returning to Luther College with "Heathers: The Musical." Directed by Robert Vrtis with musical direction by Lynne Rothrock, performances are at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11-13 and Nov. 17-20 in Jewel Theatre. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door, online at tickets.luther.edu, or by calling 387-1357. This show contains themes of violence, suicide, eating disorders and other material that audiences may find difficult. For that reason, it is recommended for audiences 13 and older. All audience members will be required to wear a face mask.

Dorian Keyboard Festival Nov. 13

The Dorian Keyboard Festival will take place in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on Saturday, Nov. 13. From 11:15-12:15 in the NRH, Luther students will be playing in a public masterclass for guest artists Irina Elkina and Julia Elkina. From 4-5 p.m., Irina and Julia will perform a guest artist recital in the NRH. All are welcome to attend. Masks are required.

International Students and Allies Association Fashion Show Nov. 13

The International Students and Allies Association invites you to attend their annual Fashion Show on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in the CFL (and virtually, link found on luther.edu/events). Proceeds from this event will go to Eswatini Solidarity Fund, a volunteer-based international movement of all sympathizers of the democratic movement in Eswatini to help with humanitarian and relief efforts brought by the political turmoil in Eswatini. Purchase your tickets ($3 in advance/$5 at door) here.

Position openings

Accountant and risk manager (1.0 FTE): Will apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Financial Account Standards guidelines in executing, analyzing, verifying, and reporting transactions of a fiscal nature. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a business-related field and at least one year of relevant experience in accounting and/or risk management required. 

Accounting assistant (1.0 FTE): Will perform bookkeeping duties which include preparation of general ledger entries and various monthly reports, processing batches/invoices for daily disbursements, and reconciliation of general ledger accounts. Associate’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience and understanding of a general ledger system is required. Two or more years of bookkeeping experience preferred. 

Union lead custodian (1.0 FTE): Will utilize their strengths to interact with students, faculty, staff, and guests to the college. Hours will typically be from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. High School diploma, at least three years direct experience in custodial work, basic computer knowledge, and ability to lead and manage others required. 

Director of disability services (1.0 FTE): The director of disability services takes an active role in managing all aspects of the department and provides leadership across the college with respect to disability and accessibility in areas such as but not limited to: Disability Services' resource coordination; educational offerings; training; disability equity and inclusion framing; assessment; innovation; practice, process, and resource development to address access in all environments. A bachelor's degree and at least two years experience in disability services is required.

Ryan Holt '25 was named winner of the 2021 Iowa Music Teachers National Association Senior Piano Competition. Ryan studies piano with Xiao Hu.

Andy Hageman published a review essay of the Nov. 5 released film "The Beta Test." Read why he recommends the film here.

Wanda Deifelt presented a paper titled "We are only temporarily abled: rising to life with disability" at the online conference Rise to Life: Doing Theology in Public Spaces, organized by the Council for World Mission, on Oct. 29.

Gereon Kopf presented "Does Siri Think? Introducing Models of Responsiveness and Reciprocity" at a workshop on "Chatbots and Philosophy" at Temple University (via zoom) on Oct. 30 and presented "Talking Across the Divide – Discovering our Common Humanity" at the 19th International Symposium on the Theory and Practice of the Teachings of Dharma Master Yin Shun in Hsinchu City (via zoom) on Nov. 6.
