Nominations for Staff Excellence Awards 
Staff and faculty are invited to nominate an administrative or support staff person for the Staff Excellence Awards. Nominations are due Friday, Oct. 22, in the Human Resources office. Winners will be announced at the Luther College Staff Day. More information about the award and the nomination process, as well as the Google nomination form can be found here.

Anticipated Regents Center traffic and parking congestion Sept. 11

On Saturday, Sept. 11, Luther will host the Cross-Country All-American meet on campus. In addition, there will be several other events taking place on campus that same day including a football game, a tennis match, and soccer games. As a result, we anticipate considerable traffic and parking congestion in the area of Regents Center. Buses delivering teams to the event will be asked to park in the Barn lot and the City Pool lot so these lots will be restricted to bus parking only starting at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10. Students who usually park in the Barn lot may park in any student or general parking area through the weekend. The usual parking regulations will go back into effect at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12. Your cooperation is appreciated.   

Fall Community Day Sept. 18

Faculty and staff and their families are invited to the annual Community Day Picnic, and football game on Saturday, Sept. 18. The annual event is sponsored by Decorah Bank and Trust in partnership with the college. Cost for the picnic is $8.00 per adult (children 16 and under are free). Kids can order a FREE "Game Pass" Created by Community T-shirt which will allow free admission to all regular season Norse athletic events for 2021-22. Registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 10! RSVP is required.

Luther website server upgrade, date change

The Marketing and Communications Office and ITS announce a date change for the planned website upgrade. It has been re-scheduled for the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 14. We request that all Reason users refrain from making updates from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 14. CEPE book group: 'The Violence Project: How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic'

Students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to sign up for a book group reading Jillian Peterson's book, which examines the phenomenon of mass shootings in America, and calls for evidence-based strategies to stop these recurring tragedies. Participants will receive a free copy of the book. The group will meet during shadow block on Sept. 30 and Oct. 7. Dr. Peterson will give a talk on campus on Oct. 13. 

Not Quite Free Lunch Sept. 14

Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, in the Peace Dining Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The menu includes grilled turkey and Swiss melts, pasta salad, green salad, chips, and dessert. The charge is $5, payable by cash, check or Luther ID. Contact Wellness <wellness> with questions.

Luther employee fitness classes are back!

Portrait and passport photos Sept. 9

Chapel this week

The fall chapel theme to begin the 2021-22 academic year is: "A New Creation." This theme, grounded in Isaiah 65: 17-18, invites us to reflect on God's work in continually making all things new. Monday chapels will be Sung Morning Prayer, a liturgy written by Marty Haugen '73, and led by campus organist Gregory Peterson. Wednesday and Friday chapels will include music, prayer, and reflections from a variety of speakers, such as: senior students, faculty, staff, and our new campus pastor and director of College Ministries, Pastor Melissa Bills. All chapels begin at 10:30 a.m. and take place in the CFL Main Hall unless noted otherwise.

Monarch Banding Event postponed to Sept. 11

The monarch butterfly migration banding event will now occur in Anderson Prairie 1–3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. Check in at the parking lot near Shirley Baker Commons to pick up a butterfly net. Families are welcome. In case of cloudy, rainy, or windy weather, the event will be rescheduled for Sunday, Sept. 12. Questions? Contact <buglab>.

"9/11 and the Ethics of Memory" series of events

What Changed, and What Didn’t? The Impact of 9/11 on Muslims in the West - Sept. 9
CEPE will host a conversation and Q&A with Todd Green, exploring the impact of the 9/11 attacks on Muslims in the United States and Europe. All are welcome to join at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, in the Recital Hall of the CFL

Faculty panel and open mic - Sept. 11
At 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, outside on Bentdahl Commons, John Cord, professor of music, will open the event with a performance of "Taps." Then faculty members Holly Moore, Robert Shedinger, and Michael Engelhardt will share their reflections on the events of 9/11 and how that day affected their lives and careers. Following their comments, audience members are invited to share their own recollections. Moderated by Lindsey Row-Heyveld. Rain location, CRH.

Candlelight vigil - Sept. 11
At 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, in front of CFL, the CEPE and College Ministries will host a candlelight vigil to remember those who died as a result of the 9/11 attacks, both on that day and in the wars that ensued. All are welcome.

“Torture and Terror at Guantánamo Bay: A Muslim Chaplain’s Firsthand Account of US Human Rights Abuses after 9/11” - Sept. 15
At  7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, James Yee, one of the first imams in the U.S. military, will present a virtual lecture, recounting his experience serving as a chaplain to Muslim prisoners at Guantánamo Bay after 9/11 and will speak to his later imprisonment after being falsely accused of spying and aiding the Taliban/Al-Qaeda prisoners. He was held in solitary confinement at the Consolidated Naval Brig in Charleston, South Carolina, for 76 days before being released and given an honorary discharge. Read more. 

Landscape and Seascape: Escaping Prison through Art
As part of the series, "9/11 and the Ethics of Memory," the CEPE, together with the Coalition for Civil Freedoms, is hosting an exhibit of paintings by artist, Wali. Opening Sept. 14 and running to Fall Break in Preus Library on the first floor.

Decorah area College Night Sept. 13

Luther College is hosting a free College Night 6:30–8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, in the Center for the Arts (CFA). More than 55 public and private colleges, and other post-secondary options, will be on hand to speak with high school students and/or parents. Welcome, new hires

Melissa Bills started as the director of College Ministries and college pastor on Aug. 23. Melissa's office is CFL 108, telephone 387-1042.

Position openings

Student accounts assistant (.83 FTE, benefit eligible): Assistant will provide support for student accounts receivable functions and assist with general office operations. Position will reply to student account questions, receipt and enter student payments and charges, clear students for registration, and release of transcripts. Assistant will work 33 hours per week with some flexibility between 8-5, Monday-Friday. High school education and two years of prior accounts receivable or office experience is required. Word and Excel skills and accounting experience is helpful.

Assistant/associate director of annual giving (1.0 FTE): This person will serve as an active member of the annual giving team responsible for raising annual unrestricted and restricted gifts to the college through solicitation of alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, and friends. This position manages the leadership annual giving program and supports reunion giving by managing the 10-year and 25-year reunion committees. Bachelor’s degree required and at least one-year experience in annual giving, development, advancement services or related field and knowledge of principles and practices associated with fundraising in higher education required. 

Regents Center 2nd shift custodial position (1.0 FTE): Hours will generally be 2-10 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8-4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Must be able to read sufficiently to follow instructions, work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required. No experience required, will receive on-the-job training. Must have the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds, walk or stand for extended periods of time, and have full range of motion in the upper extremities.

Workstation support specialist (1.0 FTE): Position to participate on the User Services and Workstation Support teams within Information Technology Services (ITS) to support, maintain, monitor, update, troubleshoot, and repair desktop computer systems, software, and applications. Bachelor's degree is required along with skill and experience using and troubleshooting standard operating systems, productivity suites, printing, and audio visual/equipment. Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills are also required.

Todd Green was interviewed by KIMT-TV Rochester's Annalise Johnson '18 for a piece reflecting on the 20th anniversary of 9/11 titled "How Islamophobia has evolved since the 9-11 attacks."

Andy Hageman published a political analysis thinkpiece on the recent horror film "The Wolf of Snow Hollow" in the online site Horror Obsessive, where he frequently contributes articles and review.

"The Dead of September 11"

Some have God's words; others have songs of comfort
for the bereaved. If I can pluck courage here, I would
like to speak directly to the dead—the September dead.
Those children of ancestors born in every continent
on the planet: Asia, Europe, Africa, the Americas...;
born of ancestors who wore kilts, obis, saris, geles,
wide straw hats, yarmulkes, goatskin, wooden shoes,
feathers and cloths to cover their hair. But I would not say
a word until I could set aside all I know or believe about
nations, wars, leaders, the governed and ungovernable;
all I suspect about armor and entrails. First I would freshen
my tongue, abandon sentences crafted to know evil—wanton
or studied; explosive or quietly sinister; whether born of
a sated appetite or hunger; of vengeance or the simple
compulsion to stand up before falling down. I would purge
my language of hypberbole; of its eagerness to analyze
the levels of wickedness; ranking them; calculating their
higher or lower status among others of its kind.

Speaking to the broken and the dead is too difficult for
a mouth full of blood. Too holy an act for impure thoughts.
Because the dead are free, absolute; they cannot be
seduced by blitz.

To speak to you, the dead of September 11, I must not claim
false intimacy or summon an overheated heart glazed
just in time for a camera. I must be steady and I must be clear,
knowing all the time that I have nothing to say—no words
stronger than the steel that pressed you into itself; no scripture
older or more elegant than the ancient atoms you
have become.

And I have nothing to give either—except this gesture,
this thread thrown between your humanity and mine:
I want to hold you in my arms and as your soul got shot of its box of flesh to understand, as you
have done, the wit
of eternity: its gift of unhinged release tearing through
the darkness of its knell.
