Office for Financial Services closed

The office for Financial Services will be closed for staff development from 8-11 a.m. Monday, March 17.

Admissions request for faculty

In an effort to reach the institutional goal of enrolling 700 new students this fall, the admissions staff is asking for help from faculty in reaching out to prospective students. Research strongly suggests that prospective students are swayed by interaction with faculty members. Admissions is looking for faculty members willing to set aside a Sunday evening to call students who we believe would benefit from contact. 

There are four Sundays chosen for this project, March 16 and 30, and April 6 and 13. Faculty who are willing to sign up for one or more evenings and receive a complimentary dinner click here. Staff Excellence Award

Staff and faculty are invited to nominate an administrative or support staff person for the Staff Excellence Awards. Nominations are due April 11 in the Human Resources office. Winners will be announced at the Luther College Staff Day. Reminder: applications due for student research symposium

Applications for students to present at the annual Luther College Student Research Symposium must be submitted by Friday, March 14. Information about the symposium, the general schedule for the day and the online application is available at http://www2.luther.edu/symposium.

Iowa College Foundation student/faculty research

The Iowa College Foundation announces its call for proposals for R.J. McElroy Trust Student/Faculty Research Projects for 2014-15. Student participants must be juniors or seniors in the fall of 2014. Applications require dual authorship by the proposing student or team of students, and a sponsoring faculty member. Funds may be used to support all expenses of a credible research project except faculty stipends. Maximum award is $2,000. Luther is eligible to submit up to four proposals. Internal deadline for proposals is April 16. Forms are available in the Dean's Office or via email by request to <brandtja>.

Flexible spending accounts

Flexible spending account dollars deducted from employee paychecks during 2013 may be used for eligible expenses through March 15. Claims for these dollars must be submitted to Midwest Group Benefits by March 31. Claim forms are available in human resources and on the hr website at https://www2.luther.edu/hr/common-forms/. Select Flexible Benefit Claim form and mail it to Midwest Group Benefits, PO Box 408, Decorah, IA 52101, or fax to 382-9613.

eBook workshops

Learn more about using ebooks from Preus Library as part of classroom instruction. Two workshops will be offered at 11-11:45 a.m. and 11:45-12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13, in the Mott room in Dahl Centennial Union. Those interested in learning more but unable to attend the workshops should fill out this form for a follow-up from a librarian.

Book Shop spring sale

Digital Media Center open house

Check out the new Digital Media Center on the lower floor of the library from 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, during the open house. See the Multimedia Studio and Multimedia Lab in action and enjoy good food and conversation. Demos include interactive classroom, greenscreen video recording and editing, speed drawing, KATIE video conversions and more. All faculty, staff and students are welcome.

Wellness, Sustainability and the Health Care Council are offering up to 150 Luther College faculty and staff households a 50 percent reimbursement, up to $100, on vegetable CSA shares. For the garden enthusiast, or wannabe garden enthusiast, there is an opportunity to subscribe for a garden membership. Luther community garden plots

Flurries may still be flying, but gardening season is right around the corner. Whether a lifetime gardener looking for a new space, interested in growing some veggies for the first time or somewhere in-between, everyone is welcome at the community garden. We offer full (20' x 20') plots for $30, half plots (20' x 10') for $20 and student plots (10'x10') for $10. More information and the plot request form can be found here.

Chapel this week

Peace Week: On the move

Join Global Concerns group for Peace Week, March 10-16, as they explore issues and opportunities faced by those "On the Move" in our increasingly globalized society. Events will include tabling, movie screenings, interfaith celebrations and forums. Look for event posters around campus and a full schedule in the College Ministries bulletin board in the Union.

Anatomy lab tours

Fall and J-term dissection students will give tours of the human anatomy lab at 9:40 a.m. March 11, 5:30 p.m March 17, and 9:40 a.m. March 18. Sign-up sheets are posted outside of Sampson Hoffland Laboratories Room 153, or contact Stephanie Fretham, <frethams>, to sign up.

'Immigration: Past, Present, and Future'

Luther College invites the community to "Immigration: Past, Present, and Future," a panel encouraging conversation on the history and current state of immigration in the United States, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. The discussion, sponsored by Luther's Hispanic Organization of Latinos y Amigos, and Enlaces, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Asian Film Series

Asian Film Series presents "Dreams" at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in the Hovde lounge in Preus Library. The film is based on the well-known Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa's actual dreams and explores the many aspects of humankind and people's need to harmonize with nature. The film runs 120 minutes.

'La Dispute'

Luther College presents "La Dispute," a theatre performance inspired by Pierre de Marivaux and adapted by Bobby Vrtis and Luther students. The performances, held in the Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts, are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 12-13; 9:30 p.m. Friday, March 14; and 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15.

FAS John Cord and Michael Smith

John Cord and Michael Smith will present brass recital at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 12 in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson Noble Music Hall. The program consists of Philip Sparks' "Fantasy for Euphonium," Thom R. George's Concert for Bass Trombone and Ernst Sachse's Concertino in Eb Major for Trumpet. Pianist Du Huang will collaborate on the concert.

Brooke Shields will show how simple it is to make your own yogurt from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Thursday, March 13, in Valders 379. Shields will teach two different methods, Crockpot and oven, and use Greek, Bulgarian and Georgian culture starters. There is no cost to attend for Luther faculty, staff and students. Os Guinness book discussion

The Center for Ethics and Public Life will hold a book-reading group discussion from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13, on "The Call: Finding and Fulfilling the Central Purpose of Your Life," by Os Guinness. Books are available in the Dean’s office to the first 30 people who claim them. The discussion will focus on chapters one to seven and 10 to 14. The group is open to all students, staff and faculty and will meet in Campus House Room 203.

Wrestling Championship qualifiers

Evan Obert and Jayden DeVilbiss have qualified for the NCAA Wrestling Championships March 14-15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Join the sea of blue and cheer Obert and DeVilbiss on by purchasing all-session passes from Coach Mitchell. Student passes are $50 and adult passes are $60. Guinness to give two presentations March 18-19

Guinness will be on the Luther campus March 18-19. He will be speaking at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, on "The Global Public Square: Religious Liberty and the Making of a World Safe for Diversity," in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. On March 19 he will speak at 7 p.m. in Valders Hall Room 206 on "A Free Peoples Suicide: Sustainable Freedom and the American Future."

Tulio Rondón hosts master cello class

Tulio Rondón will be the guest host of a cello master class at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 13, in the Orchestra Room in the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. Known for his vivid depth, passionate performances and strong leadership, Rondón was appointed adjunct professor of cello at the Simón Bolivar Conservatory at age 17, the youngest in history to teach at the Conservatory. He currently serves as the violoncello professor at the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire.

CSS presents River North Dance Chicago

River North Dance Chicago, a jazz-based contemporary dance company, will present a high energy performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 14, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Tickets for the performance, part of Luther's Center Stage Series of performing arts, are available online at tickets.luther.edu. The repertoire includes "The Worst Pies in London" from Sweeney Todd, "I Close My Eyes Until the End," "Beat," "Renatus," "Havana Blue" and "Eva," a new commission.

School Matinee Performance Series

The community is invited to watch a production of "Street Beats: Dance Through the Decades" presented by River North Dance Chicago at 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 14, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. Tickets are $2, available at the Luther College Box Office and cannot be purchased online. The show is recommended for students in grades 3 and up, and area schools have seating priority for the matinees.

FAS Hannah Leffler

Hannah Leffler will perform a flute recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 15, in the Noble Recital Hall. The program, titled "Sonorite," will focus on the beauty and resonance of the flute. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.

FAS music faculty, guest artist and Collegium Musicum

Luther College will host a Faculty Artist Series recital at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, in the Noble Recital Hall. Performers include Luther faculty Spencer Martin, Baroque violin; Kathryn Reed, harpsichord and organ; and Andrew Whitfield, baritone; guest artist Tulio Rondón performing on Baroque cello and viola da gamba; and the Luther College Collegium Musicum.

Interfaith holiday celebration

Join College Ministries, the Luther Diversity Center, and the Interfaith Student Association for light refreshments and a brief program celebrating Holi, a Hindu festival of spring and color at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 16, in Peace Dining Room. Learn about this tradition and have fun together around face-painting, making a colorful rangoli or mandala, balloon games and sweet treats. There is no charge for admission and all are welcome.

FAS Murasaki Duo

The Murasaki Duo, featuring husband and wife team Miko Kominami and Eric Kutz, members of the Luther College faculty, will present a piano-cello recital titled "100 years of Russian Cello Music: 1857-1959" at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 16, in the Noble Recital Hall. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.     

Gardening class

Learn more about transplants and seeds at a gardening class held from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Monday, March 17. The class will take a field trip to River Root Farm, located one mile from campus. Mike Bollinger and Katie Prochaska will provide instruction about transplants and seeds and how to identify which vegetables can grow from seeds planted directly into the ground and which need to be transplanted into the garden as plants. Art Song Jamboree

The second Song Jam of the 2013-14 Luther College Art Song Jamboree series will be held at 5:15 p.m. Monday, March 17, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther campus. Art Song Jamboree, or "Song Jam," is a music series dedicated to the exploration of art song, new and old, and is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Miss Iowa presentation

Nicole Kelly, Miss Iowa 2013, will give a presentation about overcoming stereotypes at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, in Valders Room 206. Her inspiring presentation on "The Power of One" is sponsored by SAC Leadership and is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Woman's Club program

Philip Freeman presents the Luther College Woman's Club program "Who Was the Real St. Patrick?" at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union. All are welcome. Shuttle service from Decorah swimming pool parking lot available with a pick-up time of 1:10 p.m.

Patrick Luber art display

An art exhibit of mixed media sculptures created by Patrick Luber will be on display March 19-April 24 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the Center for the Arts. Luber will speak in chapel at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, in the Center for the Arts. A reception for the opening of the exhibit will be held at the Wigley-Fleming Gallery following chapel.

School Matinee Performance Series

Luther College invites the community to watch the stage production of "Stuart Little," the beloved children's story about a talking mouse born to a human family in New York City, presented by the Dallas Children's Theatre. Part of Luther's 2013-14 School Matinee Series, "Stuart Little" will be presented at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther campus.

Guest recitalist Richard Fuller

Concert performer, recording artist and music scholar Richard Fuller will perform a fortepiano concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 20, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Women, Faith and Finance Seminar

On Friday, April 4, Luther will host the 10th annual Women, Faith and Finance seminar at the Hotel Winneshiek. Women of all ages are invited to come and learn more about financial management, retirement and estate planning and charitable giving. Cost is $30. Attendees who bring a friend will each save $5. CSS presents Philip Glass

Recent graduate internship: The Center for Global Learning is seeking a highly motivated, globally minded 2014 Luther graduate to serve for one academic year as the CGL intern. The internship is designed to provide an in-depth experience in international admissions and off-campus programs advising/administration to a recent Luther graduate. The CGL intern will serve in this paid internship for one nine-and-a-half month academic year. In addition to responsibilities in the CGL, the intern will also serve as the Norby Global house manager. This live-in position is approximately five to six hours per week and provides a community-based living experience. The manager is responsible for coordinating the student learning and personal development in a hall of 22 students and reports to the assistant dean and director of Residence Life.
