ANNOUNCEMENTS

Fall semester Opening Convocation

Join the community in celebrating the start of a new academic year. Opening Convocation will be held Thurs., Sept. 5, at 9:40 a.m. in the CFL. If possible, offices should close so all can attend. The speaker is Thrity Umrigar, author of "The Space Between Us," the 2013 summer reading.

There will be a Q&A with Dr. Umrigar, followed by a booksigning, at 7:30 p.m. Wed, Sept. 4 in the Main Hall of the CFL.

State of the College address

Luther College President David L. Tiede focused on challenges facing higher education and the college's strengths in meeting those challenges during his state of the college address Aug. 29. Tiede, Luther's interim president during the search for the college's 10th president, began his term July 1.

Faculty appointed to Presidential Search Committee

We are pleased to report that professors Wanda Deifelt (Religion) and John Moeller (Political Science) have been appointed to the Presidential Search Committee. They join continuing search committee member Professor Brad Chamberlain and staff members Steve Arneson and Jeanie Lovell.

We appreciate all the faculty nominations that were submitted and we thank the College Resource Council for their counsel in making these appointments.

Tomorrow we are interviewing two representatives of Student Senate and shortly thereafter will appoint one of them to the search committee. Regents Marti Rodamaker and Bishop Michael Burke have informed us that their schedules do not permit them to continue on the committee and we plan to name their replacements shortly as well.

With the full roster in place, we will continue our work.

We are excited to move forward and we thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in identifying the next leader for our beloved college.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Parking changes

The office of Safety and Security would like to alert the Luther community to some recent changes in parking regulations and/or space designations. These changes are in effect immediately. Signs have been, or will be, added to reflect the changes so please pay close attention to all signs on campus. All regular school year lot designations will be in effect starting on Tuesday Aug. 27.

In the past students with A and B stickers have been restricted from the main campus and adjacent streets during business hours. Those with A and B stickers may now utilize the Regents Center and City Pool parking lots as well as the Baker Village and College Apartments areas. The restriction from parking on the adjacent streets and the other campus lots remains in effect.
The spaces reserved for campus administration have moved from the east side of the CFL to the spaces adjacent the Campus Pastor space in the small lot south of Ylvisaker. The Reserved spaces by the CFL are now designated as General Visitor Parking.
The south side of the roadway that runs between the Bell Green and Loyalty and Larsen is now designated as Visitor Parking rather than No Parking.
The renovation of the driveway at the lower level of the Towers has resulted in the elimination of the 10 minute parking that was previously located between Miller and Dieseth. Several other short term parking spaces have been added in the immediate area however. These spaces are designated as 30 minute parking.

Like many similar institutions, when it comes to parking issues, Luther is faced with the challenge of balancing aesthetics, order, safety and convenience. In an effort to maintain such a balance Luther has developed, and maintains, a set of parking and traffic regulations. With the privilege of parking and driving on campus comes an expectation that the users of our facilities will operate and park their vehicles within the established rules. The cooperation of all will help ensure we maintain a safe environment while best utilizing our limited resources.

Welcome WorldCat Local

A reminder that over the summer the library replaced both the Magnus catalog and Encore discovery tool with WorldCat Local. This new catalog allows users to search both Luther's collection and the entire WorldCat catalog for books, articles, videos and recordings from one search box. We have also replaced our underlying library system with OCLC's (Online Computer Library Center) new WorldShare Management Services platform. New Luther ticketing system

Validate your account in the new Luther ticketing system at tickets.luther.edu. All faculty, staff, students and patrons of the box office will receive an email with their nontransferable login and password. All of your benefits for any Luther ticketed event (Christmas at Luther, faculty/staff, student CAF) will be coded to this account, and it must be set up before any purchases can be made. Do not set up a new account. If you have any questions, contact the Luther College Ticket Office, 387-1357.

Cooking classes for faculty and staff

Ever wanted to know the secret to making a good spring roll? Looking to overcome a fear of pressure cookers? Wanting a new smoothie recipe? This fall the Center for Sustainable Communities will host a variety of cooking classes on campus during shadow block and lunch. Registration is required and all classes are limited to 20 participants. In order to ensure enough spots for everyone, we ask that participants sign up for only one class. Thrity Umrigar, best-selling author of “The Space Between Us,” will present Luther College’s 2013 Opening Convocation Lecture “If Today Be Sweet,” Thursday, Sept. 5 in the CFL Main Hall

There will also be a Q&A session and book signing Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. Umrigar was born in Bombay, India and lived there until she came to the United States when she was 21.

Three professors will be installed in faculty chair positions at the service.

SAC Spotlight: Tani Diakite and the Afrofunkstars

SAC Spotlight invites the community to come listen and groove to the musical stylings of Tani Diakite and the Afrofunkstars at 9:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, in Marty’s CyberCafé, located in the lower level of the Dahl Centennial Union on the Luther campus.

Student Activities Council presents Breaksk8 Sept. 7

Featured performers in MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew" Breaksk8 will take over the CFL stage at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7.

Center Stage Series: 'Ring of Fire'

Produced by Curt Wollan, Luther class of 1973, “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash” begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14. The performance in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall is the Season Opener of Luther College's 2013-14 Center Stage Series. The performance is sponsored by Gundersen Health System.

The performance celebrates the life and music of Johnny Cash. The musical revue includes more than 35 of his hit songs including some of his well-known duets with June Carter Cash.

Luther's Distinguished Lecture Series announces 13-14 guests

Anne Lamott, author of "Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life" and "Help, Thanks, Wow," comes to Luther at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept 28. Nicholas Carr, author of the "The Atlantic" article "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" and the recent book "The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to our Brains" is the featured speaker at 9:40 a.m. and 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 6. Luther hosts Sept. 16 College Night

Northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota high school students and their parents who are interested in information about post-high school education options will have an opportunity to talk with representatives of more than 65 higher education institutions on Monday, Sept. 16.

College Night will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Sports and Recreational Center at the college's Regents Center, located on Luther College's lower campus. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Adventure Race Sept. 21

The Adventure Race is Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. Register as a relay or individual. The race consists of three miles of canoeing or kayaking, a nine mile bike ride, followed by a three mile run. Luther College Writers Festival

Award-winning authors Anne Lamott and Mark Salzman are the featured speakers at the 2013 Luther College Writers Festival, Sept. 27-28. Registration begins at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, in the Valders concourse.

The festival kicks off at 4 p.m. Friday with a reading and book signing by Salzman and concludes on Saturday evening following a 7:30 p.m. lecture and book signing by Lamott in the CFL.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, etc.

Paul Savariappan presented a paper, "Inference Procedures for Bivariate Exponential Model of Gumbel in Reliability Theory," to the 2013 Joint Statistical Meetings in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Aug. 3-8. He also participated in the Summer Institute in Biostatistics at the University of Washington in Seattle, Aug. 12-16.

The MacNider Art Museum in Mason City, Iowa, has opened a temporary exhibit of prints from their permanent collection. In a prominent corner of the exhibit gallery, Andy Warhol’s seriograph “Campbell Soup Can” (1968) faces Orville Running’s woodcut “Landshapes” (ca. 1960), a juxtaposition of near-contemporary art pieces that the late Luther College Professor Emeritus Running would undoubtedly have wryly commented on. Position opening

Part-time custodian: Part-time, .75 FTE, 12-month position. Typical hours will be day hours, Monday through Friday. Some weekend work may occasionally be required. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent required. Financial Aid administrative assistant: Seeking two full-time, 1.0 FTE, administrative assistants. The first will act as the initial office contact for prospective and current students and their families. This person will be responsible for processing and tracking of documents, reviewing budget expenditures, and preparing statistical reports.

The second will coordinate, certify, and reconcile private loan funds. This person will be responsible for the creation and mailing of award letters, reconciliation of funds, and processing state program files.

Center for Academic Enrichment administrative assistant: 31.5 hours/week, 9.5 months part-time (.62 FTE). Successful candidate will perform a variety of clerical and administrative duties in support of the day-to-day operations of the center. Duties include: serving as receptionist for students, faculty, staff and visitors to the office; maintaining the office database system and early warning system-including confidential student files; updating CAE webpages and supervising a student worker. The candidate must possess exceptional interpersonal, organizational and communication skills along with a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Book by Mira Canion '90 featured in ArtHaus class

"Agentes Secretos y el Mural de Picasso" by Luther alumna Mira Canion '90 will be the featured book in a Spanish class this fall at ArtHaus. Mira has authored a number of books with the mission to create interesting and accessible reading material for language students.
