ANNOUNCEMENTS
Formal welcome for President-elect Paula Carlson
Dr. Paula J. Carlson will be on campus Friday, May 9, and will give a short address as part of the opening session of the Student Research Symposium at 9 a.m. in the CFL Main Hall. The community will also gather for a picnic lunch from 12:15-1 p.m. in Bentdahl Commons to extend our welcome to Dr. Carlson and her husband, Rev. Dr. Tom Schattauer. Cost for the picnic is $6 if not on a meal plan. (Students have planned a special celebration, beginning around 12:15 p.m.) All members of the community are invited to join in welcoming the presidential couple to the Luther family.

Board of Regents meeting
The Regents will meet on campus Friday and Saturday May 16-17. Those enrolled in KATIE will find the Spring Report to the Board of Regents in the "Board of Regents Materials" category under "My courses." Those not enrolled can search for "Regents" in the course search box at the top of the front page of KATIE.
College Resource Council: Call for nominations
The College Resource Council seeks a faculty or staff member, appointed by the President, who has expertise directly related to matters of diversity.
The appointee serves for a three-year term. The CRC appointment by definition also puts the person on the Diversity Council.
David Vasquez has held this position and his term expires at the end of the semester. He is not eligible to return to the CRC for three years.
All faculty and staff are invited to nominate an individual to fill this vacancy. Self-nominations are welcome as well. Send nominations to Karen Martin-Schramm, <kms>, by Friday, May 16.
Please also offer counsel on the experience or wisdom this nominee would bring to Luther College’s national and global engagements with diversity. A description of the Council and its duties can be found on KATIE.

Student Research Symposium
All faculty, staff, students and members the community are encouraged to attend the Student Research Symposium starting at 9 a.m. Friday, May 9, in the CFL Main Hall.
The symposium, one of the highlights of the academic year, will open with a plenary session where Luther College President-elect Paula Carlson will be formally welcomed. Following the opening celebration, the day will unfold with talks, posters and performances by many of the top students at Luther in majors across the college. Great Giving Day
Today is Great Giving Day. Every dollar donated Tuesday, May 6, to Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness will support ongoing school outreach wellness efforts provided by AmeriCorps and FoodCorps service members in this region. Driving for Luther safety reminder
The campus community is reminded to take care and obey traffic laws when driving. Driving for the college is a special privilege. As a representative of Luther College, there are responsibilities and safety standards that accompany that privilege. Persons are expected to exercise responsible judgment regarding their conduct.
Faculty, staff and students traveling on college business are expected to adhere to applicable college policies and procedures as well as traffic laws. The primary goal is to provide safe transportation for college drivers and passengers. The privilege of driving a college-provided vehicle or a personal vehicle on college business is granted to employees who have and maintain acceptable driving records and follow the provisions found in this policy.
Brown Bag session on retirement

Reading group discussion
The Center for Ethics and Public Life is sponsoring a reading group discussion on "Hyperobjects: Philosophy and Ecology after the End of the World" by Timothy Morton from 1:30-3p.m. Tuesday, June 10, in the Borlaug room of the Union. Light refreshments will be provided.
Morton is the Rita Shea Guffey Chair in English at Rice University. He is author of more than 80 essays and numerous books. This May he is delivering the annual Wellek Lectures at the University of California, Irvine. He will likely join the discussion via Skype.

Desserts in Decorah

Digital Media Center now available
The recently constructed Digital Media Center on campus opened during J-term 2014 and has begun operation. Located on the lower level of Luther's Preus Library, this newly allocated area consists of a multimedia studio and multimedia lab.
The multimedia studio is ideal for creating multimedia projects that include video, audio and photography. It can also be used as an interactive classroom, a hybrid classroom, or a location for meetings and interviews with remote participants using technologies such as Skype, Google Hangouts or GoToMeeting along with cameras and microphones.
The hours of the multimedia lab correspond with the library hours; the multimedia studio is available with advance reservation.
Fiscal year end approaching
The end of the fiscal year is fast approaching. Remember all supplies, materials, etc., must be received by May 31 to be expensed to a FY 13-14 budget. Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices (no faxed copies) and supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by June 11 to be included in FY 13-14 budget. Items for deposit must be sent to the Office for Financial Services by June 6. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.
LFA applications
The Lecture and Fine Arts Committee has extended the deadline for the first phase of the application review cycle to Friday, May 9. Applications for LFA funding submitted after that will not be considered until fall, with a deadline of Sept. 1. Click here for the application, also found on the LFA website.
Friendship Families
The International Student Friendship Family Program is seeking individuals and families in the Decorah community to help Luther College's incoming international students adjust to life at Luther and in the United States. The Friendship Family Program has been given a new look and will be coming out with a Luther/Decorah specific handbook for both students and families with all the information participants will need. Interested individuals and families can find more information and sign up here, or call the Diversity Center for more information, 387-1014.
Gardening classes
Luther College Center for Sustainable Communities is offering a series of gardening classes that aim to provide basic information for beginning gardeners, as well as a forum for more seasoned gardeners. The series is open to the public with no charge for admission, but registration is required. Participants can view classes and register online here. The CSC encourages people to register early.
Mother's Day Peace Brunch May 11
Please join us for Peach Brunch from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, May 11, in Peace Dining Room. Price is $13.50 for adults, $6.50 for children age 5-10 and $10 for Luther students. This Mother's Day brunch requires reservations, call 387-1514.

Faculty Recognition Dinner
Luther's annual Faculty Recognition Dinner is Thursday, May 15, beginning with a 5:30 p.m. reception in Hammarskjold Lounge followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Retirees Diane Scholl and Robert Larson, in absentia, will be honored, along with 25-year honorees Kevin Kraus, Rachel Faldet, and Jessica Paul (who has actually been at Luther 26 years). Tickets are $10 and can be purchased between April 22 and May 9 online with a Luther ID. Tickets can also be purchased at the Box Office by calling, stopping by or emailing <tickets>. We hope for a good turnout to honor these colleagues!
Reminder: Staff Day 2014
Staff Day 2014 will be held Wednesday, June 4. By popular demand the format of offering a variety of breakout sessions will be repeated. Playing off the theme of our students' "Beyond the Bubble" program, this year's Staff Day theme will be "Bubble Up." Information on registering for sessions will be available mid-May.

Luther art majors present exhibit
Representing the culmination of dedicated college careers, Luther senior art majors will present a gallery exhibit of their collective work May 6-25 in the Kristen Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery and the Gregerson Gallery in the Center for the Arts. A reception for the student artists will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 24, in the Center for the Arts and is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Campus conversation - Spotlight on Sex and Gender
The WGST program will sponsor a faculty research presentation and conversation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Women and Gender Equality Center in the Gjerset House, located on High Street. This will be the final spotlight of the 2013-14 academic year.
Pedro dos Santos will discuss his research on women and politics in Brazil, paying special attention to the historical legacies of the country's patriarchal structures and shining a spotlight on the election of Brazil's first female president in 2010.
'Highway 57' performance
"Highway 57," an original dance work by Blake Nellis will be performed May 8-10 in the Jewel Theatre. Show times are 1:30 p.m. May 10, and 7:30 p.m. May 8-9. Tickets for the performances are available online through the Luther College Ticket Office.
"Highway 57," conceived, choreographed and directed by Nellis, is inspired by Edgar Lee Masters' "Spoon River Anthology." Nellis wants the performance to do more than demonstrate or narrate. He hopes the performance will remind, inspire, delight and challenge audiences.
Dumpster diving at Luther: The real story
Terry Buenzow of the Winneshiek County Recycling Center will give a presentation from 9:40-10:50 a.m. Thursday, May 8, in Valders 362. In the depths of winter Terry was busy diving through Luther dumpsters to learn more about the campus waste stream. Terry will share interesting photos, findings and observations about recycling and the waste at Luther. This event is open to students, faculty and the public.
'200 years of May 17' lecture
The Knut Gjerset Annual Lecture has been renewed this year in honor of the bicentennial celebration of the Norwegian Constitution. The lecture "200 Years of May 17th" will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in Olin 102. A reception of Norwegian vaffler will follow the lecture in the Shirley Baker Commons in Baker Village. Both the lecture and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.
The first part of the lecture will be presented by Øyvind Gulliksen, professor emeritus of American Studies at Telemark University College. His lecture is titled "My Country 'Tis of Thee: The American Centennial Celebration of the Norwegian Constitution, Minneapolis-St. Paul, May 17th 1914."
Anna Peterson, Luther College assistant professor of history, will present the second part of the lecture, titled "How to Write a Constitution in 5 Weeks: The Fateful Events of Spring 1814."
U.S. Rep. Jim Leach to lecture May 8
Professor of law and former U.S. Rep. Jim Leach will present the lecture, "The Importance of Inspiration: Leaders who Made a Difference," at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in Valders 206. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. In his lecture, Leach will note weaknesses within modern American politics and contrast models of public conduct between current times and challenging moments in America's history.
Opera performance
The music department will present two one-act operas by Giacomo Puccini: "Sister Angelica" and "Gianni Schicchi." Thought by many to be the quintessential Italian opera composer, Puccini's penchant for writing beautiful melodies and for breathing musical life into a story are on full display in these two works. Alley Cat bike race
For those who like biking and scavenger hunts, Luther College SPOKES is hosting a nighttime bicycle scavenger hunt from 8-9:30 p.m. Friday, May 9. The hunt consists of many fun checkpoints around Decorah and will start and finish in front of the Union. The top scoring groups or individuals will win prizes.The ride is open to students, faculty, staff and community members. To register or obtain more information, email <spokes>.
Fish Fry
The annual Fish Fry will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 9, in Bentdahl Commons. Food will be served along with games, prizes and entertainment. All faculty, staff and students are welcome. The rain location will be the Dahl Centennial Union and the CAF. Sponsored by Residence Life, Wellness and Sodexo.
Lucille Stansberry Rosholt award recital
Luther will host the Lucille Stansberry Rosholt Distinction in Accompanying and Collaborative Keyboard Performance Scholarship recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 11, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital will be followed by an award ceremony and reception that is open to the public.
The competition recital will feature performances by three music student finalists: Shayla DeJong, sophomore from New Sharon, Iowa; Wesley Frye, sophomore from Tinley Park, Ill.; and Caleb Sander, junior from Newton, Iowa.
A winner will be selected by a panel of judges immediately following the performances.
Luren Norsemen concert
The Luren Singing Society and the Luther College Norsemen will sing in concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 11, at the Decorah Lutheran Church. Special guests include men from Decorah High School and young men from Decorah Middle School. A freewill offering will be taken to support the Decorah Free Clinic, Decorah Free Meals, the First Lutheran Food Pantry and Decorah Lutheran Food Pantry.

Vote to help Chris Norton get a car
A football injury at Luther on Oct. 16, 2010 left Chris Norton paralyzed with only a three percent chance of regaining movement from his neck down. After many long hours spent in rehabilitation he can now stand on his own and walk with assistance. He inspires others to work toward their goals and never give up. To further his independent spirit, he is now competing for votes through National Mobility Awareness to win a car. Hear more about his story and vote for him here.

Do chores. Whether the mom in your life is a stay-at-home mom, a working mom or an empty-nester grandma, she is busy. So this Mother’s Day weekend, do chores without being asked. Clean the house – including the toilet. Wash the dishes. Do the laundry, and put it away.
Write something. If you have a way with words, consider writing mom a poem, or putting one of your favorite childhood memories to paper. If not, make a list of the things you love about your mom, or jot a note in a handmade card.
Teach her something. Does your mom want to learn something you’re good at? Maybe something about using her computer, taking good photos with a smartphone or even a craft you know how to do?
Time together. Whatever you decide to give your mom or wife this year, be sure time together is on your list. On or around Mother’s Day, plan a family outing with mom. Go to the park, or go on a hike if the weather’s nice. Visit a local museum. Or just plan a movie night at home if that’s more to her liking. The time you spend together will be worth more to her than any expensive gift.
