Meeting with President Torgerson

Faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to attend either an 8:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. meeting with President Torgerson Thursday, Feb. 17 in the CRH. The President will provide an update on Task Group 150 discussions and a recap of the February Board of Regents meeting.  The Feb. 17 meeting replaces the Feb. 23-24 staff meetings.

Strategic Plan Progress Report

A progress report on Luther's current strategic plan, "Transformed by the Journey," is available to view on Katie. The plan was launched in 2008 and is meant to guide college decision making through 2012. To view the report, go to the Office of the President folder on Katie and click on the "Luther-President" course.

Katie course sites purged Feb. 7

Katie course sites from spring 2008 term will be removed from the Katie server on Feb. 7. Notify Bob Puffer <puffro01> before Feb. 7 of any sites from spring 2008 that need to be retained. This is in keeping with an established policy of purging the Katie system of course material older than two years plus one term.

Beginning Pilates class

A staff-only beginning Pilates class will begin Feb. 3 in Larson 120, 5:15-6:15 p.m. Class size is limited to 10; sign-up will be first-come, first-served. We would love to offer a larger class but can't find another space at this popular time. Questions? Email Vicky, <jaegervi>.

Business card deadline Feb. 9

The publications office is accepting orders for business cards online at www2.luther.edu/printwork. Order in quantity increments of 250. Send a sample of an old card via campus mail to AJ Perling. Submit orders prior to Wednesday, Feb. 9. The publications office gathers business card orders at the start of each semester; please note that orders printed individually at other times cost considerably more to run.

Nearly 500 have registered

A reminder that Luther participants must register to attend all or part of the March 4-5 Nobel Peace Prize Forum.  Program and registration information is available at www2.luther.edu/peaceprize/.  Cost: $10 for students and $15 for faculty/staff and students not on a board plan.  Unless the Forum sells out, the registration deadline is Monday, Feb. 21.

Massage therapy appointments available

Habitat for Humanity dinner auction

Luther students, staff and students are invited to participate in the second annual Luther College Habitat for Humanity silent auction. Place bids on home-cooked meals in the Union Feb. 7-11, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Proceeds will sponsor Habitat's 2012 house, the first LEED certified Habitat house in Decorah. Silent auction results will be announced Friday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m.

Faculty/staff buffet: revisited

Remember the faculty/staff buffet in Peace Dining Room? It is making a one-day return in honor of the sesquicentennial kick-off Convocation. Stop by between noon and 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3 for the "Luther Blue Plate Special" for $5. 

Sesquicentennial convocation Feb. 3

Spring convocation, to be held Thursday, Feb. 3 at 9:40 a.m. in the CFL, will also be Luther's sesquicentennial kick-off celebration. The president of the University of Oslo, Ole Petter Ottersen, will speak on "Preparing Leaders for a New Global Environment: The Role of the University." Many descendants of Luther's founders will be in attendance and Dean Craft's sesquicentennial hymn, "Invocation," will be premiered. The entire community is encouraged to attend.

Magazine seeks senior profile suggestions

The Luther Alumni Magazine staff seeks help in compiling a list of Class of 2011 members to profile in a future issue. We want to hear about students who have excelled academically, but we'd also like to learn of students who have been exceptional in contributions outside the classroom or are embarking on unique or interesting careers. Email names and information on accomplishments/ activities and post-graduation plans to Sara Friedl-Putnam at <friedlsa>.

U Car Share hits Luther campus

Luther College and U Car Share are launching the first U Car Share service in Iowa. The new partnership will provide Luther students, faculty and staff as well as community members access to U Car Share's car-sharing service. Beginning Jan. 20, U Car Share will provide students, faculty and staff as well as Decorah community members with another transportation option. Sign up online at http://www.ucarshare.com.

Spring Convocation Feb. 3

President of the University of Oslo Ole Petter Ottersen, M.D., Ph.D., will be the featured speaker at the Luther College Spring Convocation, Thursday, Feb. 3 at 9:40 a.m. in the CFL Main Hall. The convocation is open to the public with no charge for admission. Ottersen's convocation address, "Preparing Leaders for a New Global Environment: The Role of the University," kicks off Luther's sesquicentennial celebration which is based on the theme "Transformed by the Journey."

Faculty artist series: Martin, Kominami

Spencer Martin and Miko Kominami will perform a viola and piano recital Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. in the NRH. "Forgotten Gems for Viola and Piano" will feature selections from the duo's upcoming CD of the same name. The repertoire consists largely of pieces by lesser-known Romantic Era composers. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Remembrance gathering for Nabby

College Ministries will hold a gathering Sunday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. to remember Luther student Nabby Baffour-Awuah who died Jan. 1. All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend, especially those who were gone during J-term and were not able to attend other memorial and remembrance services. The remembrance gathering will start in the CRH and move to Qualley Lounge. Please bring photos of Nabby on a flash drive or Facebook account as there will be opportunity to share.

Faculty artist series: Peter Lingen

Peter Lingen will perform a faculty guitar recital Sunday, Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. in the NRH. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission. Lingen will play classics of Brazilian guitar such as "Sons de Carilhões" by João Guimarães and "Preludes" by Heitor Villa-Lobos. The program also features works from several contemporary composers who are fluent in classical and pop/jazz styles including Marco Pereira, Paulo Bellinati and James McGuire.

Art department 75th anniversary

The Luther art department will observe its 75th anniversary as part of Luther's Sesquicentennial celebration that begins January 2011.

As part of the art department's 75th anniversary celebration, Luther will host a faculty exhibit Jan. 7-Feb. 10 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the Center for the Arts.

A gallery reception will be held Monday, Feb. 7 from 5-6 p.m. The exhibit and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

'Our Transformative Stories' workshop

Center Stage artist and singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer will offer a free workshop, "Our Transformative Stories," for Luther staff, faculty and Lifelong Learners participants Friday, Feb. 11, 9:15 a.m. in Peace Dining Room. Attendees will explore through writing, listening, and discussion how our personal stories of hope, struggle and transformation connect us to the larger cultural story and lead to new stories of hope and possibility. Refreshments provided. Dine with Luther catering before the Carrie Newcomer performance Friday, Feb. 11; service begins at 5:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room. CSS: Carrie Newcomer Feb.11

Whitfield, Paul recital Feb. 12

Luther faculty members Andrew Whitfield, baritone, and Jessica Paul, piano, will perform the song cycle "Winterreise" by Franz Schubert, Saturday, Feb. 12 at
4 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program will be sung in German with projected English translations.

Nordic Choir tour homecoming concert

Nordic Choir will perform a tour homecoming concert Tuesday, Feb. 8, 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther campus. The performance by the 64-member Nordic Choir is open to the public with no charge for admission.

'abUSed: the Postville Raid' Feb. 12

Luther will host the regional premiere of "abUSed: The Postville Raid" Saturday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. in Valders 206. "abUSed" will also be shown in the Postville Schools Fine Arts Center, 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12. Critically acclaimed filmmaker Luis Argueta will lead a discussion about his documentary following each film. "abUSed" tells the personal tale of the individuals, families and town that survived the largest and most expensive immigration raid in the history of the U.S.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Richard Tirk and Tarn Travers were visiting instructors at Ecole de Musique Dessaix Baptiste in Jacmel and Ecole de Musique Sainte Trinite in Port-au-Prince, Haiti from Jan. 18-23. During their stay they gave master classes, taught private lessons, coached student ensembles and in Jacmel participated in a concert where Travers performed Bach and Schubert, and Tirk was featured with the big band and played Enesco. 

Scott Carlson, in collaboration with a colleague at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has published "Brain Mechanisms Underlying Hypertension and Obesity: A Melanocortin Linkage in the Brain" in the American Heart Association's journal Hypertension.

SPORTS RESULTS/SCHEDULE

Women's swimming and diving defeated Coe Jan. 29, 166-70. Kari Kolsrud '11 and Rachel Bruns '11 set pool records; Kolsrud in the 400 IM, 4:52.37, and Bruns in the 50 freestyle, 24.59 and the 100 freestyle, 53.52. Elise DesRoches '11 won the one-meter, six dives.

Men's swimming and diving defeated Coe, 134-71. Alex Case '11 had two first place finishes. He won the 400 IM and the 100 backstroke.

Wrestling went 3-1 at the Iowa Conference Duals Jan. 29. The Norse lost to Cornell, 6-32, and defeated Central, 28-10, Buena Vista, 36-10, and Loras, 25-19.

Men's basketball lost to Loras Jan. 29, 50-51.

Women's basketball lost to Loras, 45-46.

Seeking volunteers for 'History Walk'

In celebration of the sesquicentennial, Kristen Underwood seeks faculty, staff and students to portray people from Luther's past in a "History Walk." Participants can expect 3-4 rehearsals in April; the opening performance is Saturday, May 7. Subsequent performances will be offered in the summer and fall. Symphony Orchestra's Vienna blog

Decorah school bus no. 23 change

It has come to my attention that the Decorah school system bus no. 23 will no longer accept non-route riders. There are several Decorah school kids that take that bus to Luther after school. It lets kids off on College Drive right across the pool and then they walk to their parent's office or after school activities. If you have kids who rode that bus last year, you may want to check with the school or the bus garage, 382-4165.

Packing pillows that come with deliveries on campus are now being collected and redistributed for use by local businesses. Collection bins are located in the recycling area on the first floor of Sampson Hoffland Laboratories. Bring any packing pillows received to this location.
