Directory photos at Public Information

The Public Information Office will take faculty and staff headshots in July and August. Come in if your Directory photo is more than five years old or if you want a new photo taken. Come in July 18-22, Aug. 1-5 or Aug. 8-12 between 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. or call 387-1865 for an appointment. There is no charge for this service

Health Care Council Executive Summary

May 26, 2011: Discussion continued on office visit and vision co-pays. Third quarter Caremark pharmaceuticals report was reviewed. The 2011-12 health care budget was reviewed. The July 1 reinsurance rates increase was noted. The council recommended increasing single premium $7/month and increasing family/employee + one premium by $10/month. Premium increase information has been sent to plan participants.

Luther Reuse sale July 12

A Luther Reuse Sale will be held Tuesday, July 12, 5-7 p.m. in the Ashmore-Jewell barn, next to Baker Village. As a replacement of the annual Luther College auction, the reuse sale will sell a variety of items no longer needed by the college. Luther performance on Classical MPR

The Luther performance of Stephen Paulus' "Luther Mass" at Minneapolis Orchestra Hall in April will be broadcast on Classical MPR Thursday, July 14 at 10 a.m. "Luther Mass," conducted by Allen Hightower, was performed by Nordic Choir, Cathedral Choir, Collegiate Chorale and Symphony Orchestra. Student soloists were Emily Davis, soprano; Teresa Proctor, mezzo-soprano; Adam Bradley, tenor; Michael Penick, bass.

Erickson retirement reception July 19

Join Dining Services at a retirement party for Grace Erickson Tuesday, July 19 at 2 p.m. in the Caf. After 35 years at Luther, Grace will be retiring and we're having a celebration for her friends and family. Stop by between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. for snacks and conversation.

Haemker retirement reception July 19

A retirement reception for Jim Haemker will be held Tuesday, July 19 from 2-4 p.m. to thank him for his service to Luther as director of the Book Shop and Union Services. Join us in the Addams Lounge, upper level of the Union, to bid Jim farewell. Deanna Casterton, Book Shop coordinator, will assume the position of interim director. 

Luther at the Iowa State Fair

Luther will have a table in the Varied Industries Building at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines Aug. 11-21 from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. The purpose is to gain some additional exposure in the growing Des Moines area. Members of the Admissions office will staff the table, but we could use your help.

Interested in helping us staff the booth? We anticipate meeting numerous prospective students, former graduates and Iowans looking to gain more information about our institution. We anticipate scheduling three four-hour shifts each day and would like to have as much representation from as many areas of campus as possible. Please indicate interest and availability to Sharon Rossing, 387-1650 or <rossinsh>, and we’ll let you know which days are open. We’re particularly short of help the last few days of the fair.

COMMUNITY

Position opening

Groundskeeper: Full-time position available. In addition to general grounds keeping/snow removal, this position is responsible for athletic field set-up and painting. Contact Human Resources for more information, 387-1134.

Decorah Shopping Shuttle driver: Part-time work study position opening in the Sustainability Department. We need someone with a valid driver’s license, and a great driving record to drive the shuttle a few times per month. Flexibility along with availability over breaks is preferred. The driver would drop some students off downtown, take the rest to Walmart, and wait approximately one hour before picking everyone up and returning to campus. Welcome new faculty

Luther will welcome more than 20 new faculty members to the Luther community this fall. Check the next editions of Tuesday for information about new faculty members.

Dan Davis will join the Luther faculty as professor in the classics department. Davis will begin his duties in August. A traditionally-trained classicist and classical archaeologist, Davis' current research is focused on the maritime cultures of Greece and Rome.  

Mary Patricia Donahue will join the Luther faculty as the interim head of the nursing department. Donahue worked for The University of Iowa College of Nursing where she served as assistant professor from 1976-80, associate professor from 1980-93 and professor from 1993-2006. She is a graduate of the St. Luke's School of Nursing, holds the bachelor's and master's degrees from The Ohio State University and the doctoral degree from the University of Iowa. 

Elizabeth Golovatski will join the Luther College faculty in August as visiting assistant professor of physics. Previously, Golovatski has served as a graduate research assistant, independent scholar and teaching assistant at the University of Iowa and a visiting researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.  Her research interests include theoretical and computational modeling, nanomodeling, spintronics, and spin transfer torque.

Allison Bachelder will join the Luther faculty in August as a visiting instructor of nursing. Bachelder has worked at Mayo Clinic since 2002, serving as a registered nurse in the medical unit from 2002-05 and in the pediatrics unit from 2005-11.  She holds the bachelor's degree in nursing from Allen College and is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society in Nursing.

Marv Slind presented a paper at the Norwegian-American Historical Association-Norway Chapter conference:  "Lingering Vestiges of Heritage: The Fate of Washington's Selbu Community."

Jeannette Pillsbury co-facilitated an anti-racism workshop for the Episcopal Diocese of Wyoming in Casper, Wyo., June 29-30.

Robert Shedinger served as an external evaluator for the Humanties Iowa-funded workshop "Tools for Teaching about the Middle East and Islam" held in Elkader June 29-30.
