'Citrix-New Tips and Tricks'

"Citrix-New Tips and Tricks" will share new information on how faculty and staff can access work-related software, servers and data from off-campus. Campus Buffet is back

Campus Buffet is back. Faculty and staff are welcome to join Dining Services for the revival of the Campus Buffet Thursday, March 31 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room. Cost is $5 per person. Menu includes: tossed lettuce salad, beef stroganoff, chef's choice vegetable, house-made rolls with butter, Jell-O salad, coffee and water. Call Hannah, 387-1463 with questions.

Staff Excellence Award nominations

Staff and faculty are invited to nominate a Luther staff member for this year's Staff Excellence Awards. Deadline for nominations, Friday, April 15, is earlier than normal so that the recipients can be announced at the Sesquicentennial Faculty/Staff picnic on Wednesday, May 25. Distinguished Lectures next year

Selection process has begun for next year's distinguished lectures. To submit a person for consideration, send the name(s) and reason for consideration to Tanya Gertz at <gertta01>.  Distinguished Lectures are intended to engage the entire campus around a high profile special guest once a semester, and offer various connections to academic life.

Vagts presents Paideia lecture March 29

Rachel Vagts will present the 2010-11 Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall. The lecture, titled "The Transforming Journey: A Story of Service at Luther and Beyond," will explore the history of Luther and its strong commitment of service to the greater community. A reception will follow the lecture in Qualley Lounge.

Philosophy Colloquium March 30

Jon Jensen and Storm Bailey will present a philosophy colloquium titled "Sustainability in the Classroom: Saving the World or Selling our Souls?" Wednesday, March 30 at 4 p.m. in Valders 362.

'Luther Sketches' March 30-31

Faculty, staff and students are invited to a 50-minute performance of "Luther Sketches: A Lighthearted Romp Through Luther's Sensational Saga." Seven students, under the direction of Bob Larson, are performing the work at alumni events in the Midwest. See it on campus Wednesday, March 30 at 7 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall or Thursday, March 31, at 9:40 a.m. in the CFL Main Hall. The Thursday morning performance will be counted as work time for staff that would like to attend. 

Luther Religion Forum lecture March 31

Venerable Professor Yifa, a Taiwanese Buddhist nun, scholar and writer, will present a Luther College Religion Forum Lecture Thursday, March 31 at 7 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall.  Her lecture, titled "Women in Buddhism," is open to the public with no charge for admission.

FAS: Heather Armstrong

Heather Armstrong will perform a faculty artist series recital Thursday, March 31 at 7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. She will be joined by guest pianist Korey Barrett. The program will feature works for oboe and piano, including sonatas by Paul Hindemith and Edmund Rubbra and "Three Piece Suite" by Madeleine Dring.

Women, Faith and Finance

Women of all ages will have an opportunity to learn more about financial management, retirement and estate planning, and charitable giving at the seventh annual Women, Faith and Finance seminar on Friday, April 1.  The seminar will be presented 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Hotel Winneshiek.  The program is open to the public.  To register, contact the Luther College Development Office, (563) 387-1862 or http://www2.luther.edu/wff. FAS: Michael Chesher April 1

Michael Chesher will perform a faculty artist series clarinet recital Friday, April 1 at
7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program will include two works for clarinet and piano to be performed with Du Huang, piano: William Hurlstone's "Four Characteristic Pieces" and Luigi Bassi's "Rigoletto Fantasia di Concerto."

Scherubel '63 art on display April 1

The paintings of Richard Scherubel '63 will be on display April 1-May 22 in the upper level of the CFL. Scherubel's work is primarily made up of nonrepresentational visual phenomena, often developed from small sketches with subsequent color and shape adjustments. The paintings suggest a variety of moods, attitudes and ideas in an evolving attempt to bring opposites together. Samples of Scherubel's work can be viewed on his website, http://www.scherubel.com.

Farrell to lecture on changing the world

Educator and author James Farrell will speak on "How a New Understanding of Campus Life Can Change the World" at the plenary session of the annual Associated Colleges of the Midwest Conference, hosted by Luther College April 3-4. His lecture is Sunday, April 3, 7:30 p.m. in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206. A reception with Farrell will immediately follow the lecture. His presentation is open to the public with no charge for admission.

'Eyewitness to the Egyptian Revolution'

Ahmed Shawki, internationally-recognized activist, journalist and author, will present a Luther College Guest Lecture Tuesday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m. in Olin 102.

In his lecture, "Eyewitness to the Egyptian Revolution," Shawki will discuss his firsthand account of the Egyptian revolution. He will provide the Luther community with a unique perspective on the future of the movement in the months to come and its impact on struggles throughout the Middle East and the rest of the world. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Jason Derülo in concert April 7

Singer, songwriter, dancer and actor Jason Derülo will perform in concert Thursday, April 7 at 8 p.m. in the Regents Center. Tickets are $27, available at the Luther Box Office. 

Opening act for the Derülo concert is Nikki & Rich. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.  The concert is sponsored by Luther's Student Activities Council: Concerts Committee.

Jazz Orchestra to perform April 13

Luther College's Jazz Orchestra will perform Wednesday, April 13, 7 p.m. at Center for Faith and Life. The performance is open to the public. The Jazz Orchestra concert program will feature Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

Maakestad art exhibit on display April 14

Paintings by Tom Maakestad '80, will be on display April 14-May 22 in the Kristen Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the Center for the Arts.

Maakestad's large landscapes have been featured in 50 group and solo exhibitions in the U.S. and overseas, including 10 shows at the Groveland Gallery in Minneapolis over the past 16 years.

On March 18, Andi Beckendorf and Germano G. Streese presented "Seeking Wisdom in Community: Shaping a First-Year Research Experience" at the Iowa chapter conference of the Association of College and Research Libraries. The presentation described how librarians have worked collaboratively with the Paideia program on the research unit and highlighted the new LISGuides presence http://guides.luther.edu/. Richard Tirk performed as principal trumpet with the Wichita Grand Opera for their 10th anniversary Gala Concert featuring opera notables Samuel Ramey, Joyce DiDonato and Alan Held. 

Xiao Hu and Du Huang presented a recital at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., as part of the "Harmony at Mayo" Series. 

SPORTS RESULTS/SCHEDULE

Softball, ranked No. 5 in NCAA III, posted a 9-1 record at National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Fla., March 19-25.

Baseball posted a 7-3 record at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Meyers, Fla., March 18-23. The Norse defeated Cornell March 26-27, 7-1, 2-1 and 10-2.

Home events this week:

Baseball hosts St. Johns March 29 at 2 p.m. and Coe April 1 at 3 p.m. Both games will be video streamed. The Norse will also host two seven-inning games with Coe April 2 at noon.

Softball hosts UW-Stevens Point March 30 at 3 p.m. and Coe April 2 at 2 p.m. Both games will be video streamed.

Sustainability tip

Properly recycle your electronics: Gina's E-Recycling is a local source for electronics recycling. She is teaming up with Green Iowa AmeriCorps to host an Electronics Recycle Drive for small electronics on Saturday, April 9 at the Decorah Chamber of Commerce, 8 a.m.-noon. Most appliances will be processed free of charge, with the exception of a few more complicated pieces.
