Welcome new faculty
Conor O'Brien, of Minneapolis, will join the Luther faculty in February 2012 as a visiting assistant professor of music. O'Brien holds the bachelor's degree from the Royal Irish Academy of Music and the master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Minnesota where he studied under pedagogue Sally O'Reilly.
Benjamin Yates will join the Luther faculty as an adjunct music faculty for the 2011-12 academic year. He holds the bachelor's degree from Luther and the master's degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Diversity Center seeks friendship families
The Diversity Center is in need of friendship families for our new international students arriving for the 2011-12 academic year. Never hosted an international student? Now is your chance to open your home and offer your family a fun new experience. The friendship families are not asked to house the students, but invite them to their homes for a meal, take them on recreational excursions or attend events in the community with the students. It is not a big obligation and can foster long-term relationships with students from another culture. Contact Darlene Fossum-Martin, 387-1014.

Fordice awarded Fulbright Award
Ryan Fordice '08, has been awarded a Fulbright Award for 2011-12. Four Luther College students and alumni have been named recipients of Fulbright Awards in the past year. Fordice, a 2008 Luther graduate from Dubuque, Iowa, graduated magna cum laude and was named into Phi Beta Kappa with majors in religion and music. He will serve as an English language instructor at Gaziantep University in Gaziantep, Turkey.

Weight Loss Tip No. 2: Barley for Breakfast
Barley got its hunger-fighting reputation after Swedish researchers found that eating barley or rye kernels for breakfast kept blood sugar on an even keel. That's because the carbs in barley and rye kernels are "low glycemic index," meaning they raise blood sugar more slowly than some other carbohydrate foods. This helps you avoid a spike, and then a drop, in blood sugar, which can leave you feeling famished.
One caveat: buy hulled barely, not pearl barley. The Swedish researchers used minimally processed hull barley, and they can't vouch for the same effects for more processed forms, such as pearl barley.
