Sustainability tip

The kitchen is the center of your home. Small changes can make it the core of your reducing, reusing and recycling habits. Here are ways to reduce kitchen waste, reuse what you can and recycle items.

·       Compost organic waste. Peels, skins, and trimmings from fruits and vegetables; coffee grounds; egg shells; tea bags; and other kitchen waste can be combined to make compost, which you can use as natural, organic fertilizer on your lawn and garden.

·       Recycle food packaging. Most community recycling programs accept cereal and cake mix boxes, beverage bottles and cans, and steel soup, vegetable, and fruit cans. Learn the different materials your community's recycling program accepts at www.Earth911.org.

·       Buy in bulk or concentrates. Buying bulk sizes of the products you use often or in large quantities saves you money. Bulk and concentrated goods also come with less packaging.

·       Choose fresh and local instead of packaged food. When you buy fresh produce, food often tastes better and is healthier, and you eliminate cans, boxes or bags that you normally throw away or recycle.

Weight Loss Tip No. 1: Variety Is Overrated

Variety doesn't deserve its good reputation, says Dawn Jackson Blatner, R.D., a Chicago dietitian and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.

"We know that variety makes you eat more," she says, citing several published studies and her own experience in counseling weight loss patients.

For example, researchers in France found that study participants ate more french fries when they were offered catsup and mayonnaise along with them. And when they were given the option of having cream or whipped cream with their brownies, they ate more than when the brownies were offered plain.

Researchers found that people who have maintained weight loss tend to eat diets with limited variety.

And finally…

Summer days driftin' away, to oh those summer nights.
