Final staff meeting of the year

The April staff meeting will have President Torgerson sharing highlights of the year, senior students reflecting on their time at Luther, and—continuing this year's "top 10" theme—Judy Nye will share "The 10 Most Interesting Questions I've Received as a Faculty Member."  The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room:  Wednesday, April 20, at 2 p.m. and Thursday, April 21 at 9 a.m. All are welcome.

Distinguished Lectures next year

Selection process has begun for next year's distinguished lectures. To submit a person for consideration, send the name(s) and reason for consideration to Tanya Gertz at <gertta01>.  Distinguished Lectures are intended to engage the entire campus around a high profile special guest once a semester, and offer various connections to academic life.

Business card deadline April 20

The Publications office is accepting orders for business cards online at www2.luther.edu/printwork. Please order in quantity increments of 250. Send a sample of an old card via campus mail to AJ Perling. Submit orders prior to Wednesday, April 20. This order will be printed and back just before graduation to accommodate summer travelers. The Publications office gathers business card orders at the start of each semester; note that orders printed individually at other times cost considerably more.

Luther Neighbors Project with HFH

Remember to return pledge cards with pledges and/or donations in support of the Luther Neighbors project with Habitat for Humanity. Gardening 101

The Pepperfield Project and Luther Sustainability are offering gardening classes this summer. The classes are open to beginning, intermediate and advanced gardeners who want tips from gardening basics to gardening with limited space, planning a fall garden and gardening/ canning for colder months. 'Restoring the Nature of Childhood'

Environmental educator Ken Finch will present "Restoring the Nature of Childhood" Tuesday, April 12, 6 p.m., in Valders Hall of Science, Room 362.

Finch, of Green Hearts Institute for Nature in Childhood, will share thoughts and data about an emerging "nature deficit disorder," its implications and impacts, and how we can restore nature-based play to childhood. He will discuss the importance of nature-based play in early childhood centers, community parks and children's own backyards.

National Library Week book sale

Preus Library's annual National Library Week book sale will be held Monday-Friday, April 11-15. Hundreds of hardcover and paperback books will be available. Prices will decline daily.

'The Luxury of Limited Means'

Janne Kimberly Flisrand '94, will present the lecture "The Luxury of Limited Means: The Freedom to Choose Your Own Route" Tuesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. Flisrand will be on campus for a five-day residency, April 10-14.

Jazz Orchestra to perform April 13

Luther College's Jazz Orchestra will perform Wednesday, April 13, 7 p.m. at Center for Faith and Life. The performance is open to the public. The Jazz Orchestra concert program will feature Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

Poem-in-Your-Pocket Day April 14

Enjoy the richness of well-placed words. Put a poem your pocket Thursday, April 14 for Poem-in-Your-Pocket Day. Poems free for the taking will be available in various locations around campus. Take one, read it and then save it or give it to a friend. Cantorei concert April 14

Cantorei, a choral ensemble of 50 women, will perform a spring concert Thursday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall.

The concert is the choir’s culmination of its spring semester’s work and will include a variety of choral music, both a cappella and accompanied.  Student accompanists include senior, Paige Silberhorn, piano and sophomore, Sydney Kjerstad, piano.  

Unified Jazz Ensemble April 14

The Unified Jazz Ensemble, a renowned jazz quartet, will perform at Luther Thursday, April 14 at 9 p.m. in Marty's CyberCafé. The quartet aims to entertain with their big band beats and funky grooves.

Tickets are $5 and are available at the Luther Box Office, 387-1357 or <boxoffice>. 

The group is dedicated to bringing the best of jazz to audiences of all ages by engaging listeners in innovative performances of jazz standards and original compositions. Sponsored by SAC Diversity.

Comedian Pete Lee April 15

Pete Lee, comedian, will perform Friday, April 15 at 9 p.m. in Marty's. Lee won Country Music Television's Next Big Comic and has been featured numerous times on Comedy Central.

Parents' Day Out April 16

APO is hosting a Parents' Day Out service event Saturday, April 16 from 1-4 p.m. Parents, professors and others from the community can drop off their children for the afternoon and take some time for themselves. Drop off children at Brunsdale Lounge in Dieseth Hall, where members of APO will play games and entertain children. Free babysitting. Contact <apo> if interested.

Retirement party

The Economics and Business department invites students, faculty, staff and alumni to join us in celebrating two special retirements. Uwe Rudolf and Rich Leake are retiring after a combined 76 years of service. World premiere of Paulus piece

The internationally-renowned choirs and orchestra of Luther will perform "Luther Mass" by Stephen Paulus Saturday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life and Sunday, April 17 at 4 p.m. at Orchestra Hall, Minneapolis.

Conducted by Allen Hightower, the Luther Cathedral Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra will perform the world premiere of the newly commissioned mass in addition to Franz Joseph Haydn's "Lord Nelson Mass."

Pre-concert lecture April 16

The Luther and Decorah communities are invited to attend a pre-concert lecture Saturday, April 16 at 6 p.m. in the Mott-Borlaug Room in Dahl Centennial Union.  James Griesheimer will present comments on the "Lord Nelson Mass" by Haydn, and composer Stephen Paulus will be present to discuss his new work.

LASO: 'Miles for Norton'

Luther Athletes Serving Others will hold "Miles for Norton," Sunday, April 17 at 1 p.m. "Miles for Norton" is a 5K run through campus and out into the Decorah community in honor of Chris Norton, a freshman Luther football player who was severely injured in a home football game this fall.

The run begins at the front entrance of the Union. Cost to register is $3 per person. Register outside of the Cafeteria at dinner on Wednesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 14, or at the event on Sunday in front of the Union. All money raised will go to Chris Norton and his family. Easter eggs will be hidden along the running route that contain gift certificates to be used on campus or in the Decorah community.

Luther College Woman's Club

Jon Lund will present the Luther College Woman's Club program Tuesday, April 19. Lund's presentation "International Students: Creating a Global Learning Environment" will be at 1:45 p.m. in Peace Dining Room. All women from Decorah and surrounding communities are encouraged and invited to attend. Refreshments will be served following the program, with a  brief business meeting and up-date on current events at Luther. Childcare is available during the meeting. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Rachel Ware presented "How are we Communicating? The Use of Science and Imagery in North American Voice Studios" at the College Music Society's Great Lakes regional conference at Lawrence University April 2 in Appleton, Wis. She shared the results of a research survey that she conducted of 520 pedagogues concerning their use, value of and perceived success when using Science and Imagery when teaching voice students.  

David Kamm recently attended the Foundations in Art: Theory and Education conference in St. Louis, where he was part of a panel on "Attentiveness." He also has an article titled "Riding the Light: Visual Thinking and the Constructive Mind" in the latest issue of "Future Forward," published by Integrative Teaching International. Sixteen Luther students presented research projects at the 25th National Conference on Undergraduate Research, the showcase event for exemplary research and scholarship by undergraduate students from the nation's top colleges and universities. Some 2,000 undergraduate students in all academic disciplines came together to present and discuss their research projects through posters, oral presentations, visual arts displays and performances. The 16 Luther students were accompanied by Brad Chamberlain and Mark Muggli.

Lori Stanley and seniors Sylvie Hall and Kia Johnson attended the annual conference of the Society for Applied Anthropology, March 30-April 2, in Seattle.  Stanley organized a symposium on anthropology and study abroad, and presented a paper titled "Forging Partnerships through Study Abroad: Cross-Cultural Collaborations in Maasailand." Hall and Johnson coauthored and presented two papers, "Applied Anthropologists in the Making: Lessons Learned in Maasailand" and "Pastoralists, Plants, and the Preservation of Traditional Knowledge: Striving for Reciprocity in Study Abroad."

J. R. Christianson conducted a U.K. Seminar of The Society for Court Studies in London on April 4. The seminar on "Science and Religion at the Court of Denmark 1536-1700" was held at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art in Bedford Square.

Ann Highum was one of four student life professionals asked to present an all-day workshop at the recent conference of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, March 12 in Philadelphia. The workshop, "Mid-Level Institute for Small College and University Professionals," covered topics important for the leadership development of 25 staff from around the country.

Richard Leake presented a paper titled "Physiognomy: A Fresh Look at an Old Selection Tool" at the MBAA International (formerly Midwest Business Administration Association) annual meeting in Chicago on March 4. The paper was selected by peer review and will be published in an upcoming edition of the Journal for North American Management Association. Leake was also awarded the North American Management Society's Outstanding Service Award, 2011, at the MBAA meeting.

Eric Kutz, cello, and Miko Kominami, piano, performed Feb. 26 at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids as part of the Orchestra Iowa Chamber Players Series. The two performed Saint-Saens Piano Trio No. 1 with Orchestra Iowa concertmaster Holly Mulcahy.  Their performance was broadcast twice in April on Iowa Public Radio.

Tim Schweizer presented a paper titled "Introducing Idea Mapping into the Business Curriculum: Results from Two Experiments" at the seventh International Conference on Technology, Knowledge, and Society, March 25-27, in Bilbao, Spain.

Hannah Crippen '11 edited a new print anthology of creative nonfiction pieces by her classmates in Amy Weldon's Creative Writing: Nonfiction course. Hannah was inspired to showcase their talent in a book, printed through the online publishing site Lulu.com. Titled "Every Place I Go, I Take Another Place With Me"—the title of an essay by classmate Anna Rick, included in the collection—the book will be available for sale at lulu.com and through the Luther College Bookshop.

Amy Weldon presented her creative nonfiction piece "Three Elizabeths: An Imagining" at a conference in honor of the retirement of American literature scholar Linda Wagner-Martin at her alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 7-9. Weldon presented a pedagogical paper, "'The First Enthusiasm of Success:' Reading Victor Frankenstein as a College Student" at the Association of Core Texts and Courses Conference in New Haven, Ct. April 14-16. Her essay "Money and a Room: One Woman Gets Real" is forthcoming in the New Haven Review, developed by her continuing work on her blog, http://cheapskateintellectual.wordpress.com.

Sean D. Burke presented a paper titled "From Gender-Resistant to Gender-Queering: Ruth and Judith" at the Society of Biblical Literature Upper Midwest Regional Meeting held in St. Paul, Minn. April 1-2.

SPORTS RESULTS/SCHEDULE

Baseball defeated Buena Vista April 8, 3-1, then lost a double-header to BV April 9, 2-7 and 3-6.

Men's track placed second of three teams at the Norse Relays April 9. Trent Stonerook '11 placed first in the javelin and Zach Kotz '11 placed first in the shot put.

Women's track and field placed first of three teams at the Norse Relays April 9. Four individuals and two relays posted first place finishes. Lauren Boleen '11 will make her third trip to the NCAA DIII National Outdoor Championships after automatically qualifying with a school record of 146-10 in the javelin. The 4x1600 relay of Sarah Lundine '11, Christina Storlie '13, Kim Horner '11 and Emma Spoon '12 set a school record of 21:09.57 winning the event. Melissa Erickson '12 won the steeplechase, 11:48.24; Addy Rickels '13 won the high jump, 5-1 3/4; and Amanda Dunn '14 won the discus, 131-3. The 4x400 relay of Michelle Voigts '11, Jordan Dudek '14, Sam McAllister '12 and Dani Meirick '12 won the event by almost eight seconds in 4:06.57.

Men's tennis defeated Cornell, 6-3, and UW-Eau Claire, 7-2, on April 9. The Norse lost to Coe April 10, 4-5.

Softball went four for four this weekend, defeating Buena Vista April 9, 2-0 and 5-1, and St. Mary's April 10, 11-2 (6) and 6-2. Lexy Determan threw for a four-hit shutout, striking out 15 of the 24 batters she faced.

Faculty/staff are encouraged to "save the date" for the 2011 Senior Sendoff. Survey: exploring Decorah gardens
