ANNOUNCEMENTS
February staff meeting change
Instead of the Feb. 15-16 staff meetings previously scheduled, all staff are invited to one session Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 11 a.m. to noon in Valders 206. President Torgerson and Paula Meyer, chair of the Board of Regents, will brief the staff on actions taken by the Board of Regents at their Feb. 10-12 workshop. Diane Tacke will share peer comparison data related to compensation. Because many offices need to remain open during this hour, departments are encouraged to designate a representative who can report back to colleagues unable to attend.

Candidate open forum
An open forum with Corey Landstrom, finalist for the position of Vice President and Dean for Student Life, will be held Monday, Feb. 27, from 11 a.m.-noon in Mott/Borlaug. His file may be accessed on Katie in the VP-STUDENT-LIFE-2011 course under the President's Office "candidate searches" folder.

LIS 'Teaching and Technology': Podcast Producer
LIS will hold a "Teaching and Technology" session Tuesday, Feb. 21, 3:30-4:30 p.m., Hovde Lounge, Preus Library on Podcast Producer.
Podcast Producer allows instructors to easily capture video/audio of a classroom or instruction activity, and then stream it from a course's KATIE site. This session will demonstrate some examples of how the software has been used on campus, and will step through the basic process of how to capture and display video streams.
LIS faculty development brown bag
LIS will hold the first in a series of brown bags highlighting the work of faculty who attended the "Enhancing Student Learning Through Information Literacy and Technology" summer workshop Monday, Feb. 27, 12:15-1:15 p.m. with presenters Brooke Joyce, Ben Moore and Steve Smith. The session will feature Ben Moore demonstrating how an iPad in a studio classroom can increase efficiency by gathering information almost instantly and presenting that information to the whole class wirelessly. Brooke Joyce and Steve Smith will demonstrate two software programs that manipulate sound and will discuss how students use them to create original compositions.
Health Risk Appraisals
Health Risk Appraisals have been mailed to all employees. Look for a blue envelope from the Office of Human Resources. The envelope will contain details about how to log onto the Other Health Plan website to do the Health Risk Appraisal. The Health Risk Appraisal is one of the three steps required in 2012 to avoid the additional increase in monthly health care premiums.
Facilities Services: driver announcement
Drivers of Luther vehicles are required to annually complete a driver's application. Applications are available on the Facilities Services' web page or the Facilities Services office. Drivers are required to provide a copy of their driver's license. First-time applicants must provide a copy of their health insurance card and take a quiz at the Facilities Services office. Large vans have special requirements which can be found online in the "Vehicle Use Handbook."
Discounted meals at the cafeteria
Luther faculty and staff receive discounted door prices at the Caf while they are working. The Caf is all-you-care-to-eat and features homemade recipes, local items-including 100 percent local Grass Run Farms hamburgers, every day and fresh ingredients. Join us for breakfast for $3.50, lunch for $5 and dinner for $6.75 any day of the week.
Fast and Feast
Fast and feast in community this Lent. Fast on Wednesdays during Lent from Ash Wednesday on Feb. 22 through Wednesday of Holy Week, April 4. As a way of sharing in a core spiritual practice of Lent, you are invited to choose a fast for Wednesdays in Lent. Fast from a meal, a particular treat (coffee, chocolate), or do an electronic fast (stay off Facebook, avoid texting, turn off your cell). Mark the day of fasting in community Wednesdays at Eucharist in the CFL with a simple communion service at 9:30 p.m. followed by a time of fellowship. Soup and bread will be served to break the fast.
Starbucks representative on campus
Have questions about Starbucks and Seattle's Best coffee? Through a request by Dining Services, a Starbucks representative is visiting campus Wednesday, Feb. 22 to speak with student groups and any interested members of campus. Attendees will learn more about fair trade vs. fairly traded coffees and other sustainability-related concerns. Open presentations will be held at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. in Peace Dining Room. All are welcome to attend.
International Studies declaration
Know a student interested in declaring a major or minor in International Studies? If so, the first step in that process is to attend an information session and fill in a plan of study form. There are two opportunities to do this in the coming weeks: Thursday, Feb. 23 and Thursday, March 8. Both sessions will be held from 9:40-10:30 a.m. in Koren 217. Attendees will hear details about the IS major and minor, and begin to fill out the necessary paperwork to declare the major/minor. Contact Victoria Christman with questions at <chrivi02>.

CSS: Spirit of Uganda Feb. 21
Spirit of Uganda will perform Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office, 387-1357, $24, $22 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18. Spirit of Uganda is made up of dancers and musicians ages 8-18, who bring to life the sounds and movements of East Africa though bright costumes, dramatic choreography, standing drums and call-and-response vocals.
Osterholm lecture Feb. 23
Michael Osterholm, internationally known epidemiologist and science advisor to state and national government agencies, will speak on Thursday, Feb. 23 about his avocation: restoration and protection of the cold water trout streams of the Driftless Plains Region of northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota. His lecture "A Perspective on the Future of Coldwater Stream Restoration in the Driftless Area" is at 9:40 a.m. in Valders 206. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Artist receptions Feb. 23-24
Two artist receptions will be held Feb. 23 and 24 for art exhibits currently on display at Luther College.
Drawings and paintings by Decorah artist Viktor Iudin will be on display through March 16 in Luther's Preus Library. An artist reception will be held Thursday Feb. 23, from 4-5:30 p.m. in Hovde Lounge of Preus Library.
An art exhibit featuring the work of Mat and Paul Rude will be displayed in the Kristin Wigley-Flemming Gallery in Luther's Center for the Arts through Feb. 29. There will be a reception for the artists in the Kristin Wigley-Flemming Gallery on Friday, Feb. 24, from 5-7 p.m.
The exhibit at Luther is the first time the Rude brothers have displayed their artwork together.
The exhibits and receptions are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Faculty Artist Series: Andrew Whitfield
Andrew Whitfield, Luther associate professor of music, will perform a baritone voice recital Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall.
The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The program will include two cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach: "Ich habe genug" and "Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen." Whitfield will also sing works by Felix Mendelssohn and Brooke Joyce, Luther College composer-in-residence.
Human dissection seminars
Ever wanted to see what the inside of a human body looks like? The students who took Human Dissection and Anatomy during J-term would like to share their dissections. This opportunity will be offered to Luther students, faculty and staff from Feb. 27-March 15. Sessions will be in SHL 153 and last about 45 minutes. Faculty Artist Series: Beth Ray Westlund
Mezzo soprano Beth Ray Westlund will perform a voice recital Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall.
The program features two Handel arias, chosen partly as a result of Ray's 2010 sabbatical research on the dramatic context of Handel operatic arias. The recital also features five songs of Austrian composer Joseph Marx, and two songs of English-born composer Rebecca Clarke.
Jessica Paul is the collaborative pianist for the performance. Alumni lecturer Rachel Ware, soprano, will also perform.
CSS: Brentano String Quartet
Brentano String Quartet will perform at Luther Friday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Tickets are on sale at the Luther Box Office, 387-1357 or online http://boxoffice.luther.edu. The quartet will perform compositions from their latest project, "Fragments: Connecting Past and Present." The project, co-commissioned by Luther, invited six composers of today to "finish" or complement unfinished pieces by past composers including Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert.

Kelsey Klimesh '12, will perform a soprano recital Saturday, March 3 at 7 p.m.

Day trip to Minneapolis March 3: Nobel Peace Prize Forum
This year's Nobel Peace Prize Forum will be held in Minneapolis March 1-3. It is a three-day event, with different themes for each day. Luther will charter a bus to take people up and back for the Saturday, March 3 program, which will include addresses by Nobel laureate F.W. De Klerk, Naomi Tutu and CNN international reporter Jonathan Mann. Cost for students is $20 for Saturday's programming. Register online at http://nobelpeaceprizeforum.org. Casting call: standardized patient for nursing scenario
Volunteer wanted to play a patient in a home visit scenario with Luther nursing students Friday, Feb 17, 8-10:30 a.m. in Valders. Volunteer will be asked to come to a one-hour volunteer orientation during the week of Feb 13-17 at their convenience. Script will be provided. No medical knowledge or acting experience necessary. Must be willing to have students listen to your heart and lungs. Students appreciate the chance to interact with a "real" patient. Hip Hop classes
Birte Heinecke from Hanover, Germany will be teaching studio Hip-Hop classes as part of her internship study with Jane Hawley. Birte is currently working on the master's degree in performance studies at the University of Hamburg. Birte will be researching how the movement fundamentals curriculum can develop more creative approachs and abilities within hip-hop training. Hip-Hop classes for adults ages 16 and up will be Sundays, 7-8:30 p.m. in Studio II, Center for the Arts Feb. 26-March 18. Hip-Hop classes for children ages 6-15 will be held Mondays, 4-5:30 p.m. in Studio II, Center for the Arts Feb. 27-March 19. These classes are free and open to the public.
