Faculty/staff open forum

President Torgerson will host two open forums to discuss TG150 recommendations in the CFL Recital Hall Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2-3 p.m. and Thursday,

Sept. 22, 9:30-10:30 a.m. The Task Group 150 draft report is posted on Katie for faculty and staff to study and comment. Go to the course called "Office of the President" and then "Luther-President." Individual comments can be directed to <skodalda>.

Chapel time

A reminder to the community that there are to be no meetings scheduled during Chapel, 10:30-10:50 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Luther is distinctive in its practice of making space for community-wide chapel and I ask the campus to respect this tradition of having "set apart" time for reflection and spiritual nourishment.

Faculty/staff training sessions

In an era of greater attention given to institutional risk management issues, Luther periodically offers training sessions focused on the prevention of workplace harassment and discrimination. All faculty and staff are expected to participate.

Please plan to attend one of three workshops scheduled for this month:

Updated Tuition Benefit Program

Friday Prayers

Join us each Friday at 12:15 p.m. in the Melanchthon Interfaith Room (second floor in the CFL) for Friday Prayers. Rooted in the Muslim tradition, this brief service is open to all. A call to prayer will be followed by readings, reflection and prayers. Luther alumnus Ahmed Alkhalili '10 and current students will be sharing in leading prayers. Sponsored by the Muslim Student Association and Allies, College Ministries and the Diversity Center.

Employee blood screening news

Effective immediately all staff, faculty and spouses interested in signing up for employee blood screenings will now to sign up online for their appointment in Health Service.

Complete and submit the form online and Health Service will receive your information.

Health Service appreciates everyone's cooperation in this new system.

Communication studies speech lab

Communication studies staffs a speech lab for campus-wide use. The purpose of the lab is to help Luther students improve their oral presentations before giving them in class. Students are helped on a first-come first-served basis. A communication studies major will videotape the student speech or presentation and provide constructive criticism. Recipe submissions due Sept. 15

Remember, recipe submissions for the Luther Cook Book need to be returned to the Book Shop by Sept. 15. All current and former faculty, staff, administration, regents and friends of Luther are invited to contribute. If you haven't received recipe forms contact the Book Shop or stop by and pick them up.

Office Supplies Reuse Station has moved

The Office Supplies Reuse Station has moved to the closet across from 372F in the Environmental Studies/Sustainability Office Suite. Bring unwanted notebooks, folders, binders, staplers, scissors, markers/pens/pencils (new and used), etc. and pick up supplies. Founders Day Festival Dinner

Founders Day Festival Dinner and Celebration of Distinguished Service will be held at Homecoming, Friday, Oct. 14, 5:30 p.m. reception, 6 p.m. dinner. 'Sounding the Sonnets'

Mark Z. Muggli is reading two of Shakespeare's 154 sonnets aloud in Bentdahl Commons Monday through Friday from 12:05-12:10 p.m., Aug. 31-Dec. 9. "Sounding the Sonnets: a Ritual Performance Happening" is part of Muggli's 2011-13 Jones Professorship "Our Shakespeare" project. Biology Colloquium Sept. 15

Brian Aukema, Forest Entemologist at the University of Minnesota, will present "When good insects go bad: mountain pine beetle and how the west was lost," Thursday, Sept. 15 at 9:40 a.m. in Valders 206. All members of the Luther community are invited to attend.

Guest voice recital: Tiffany Blake

Tiffany Blake, assistant professor of voice and voice area coordinator at Colorado State University, will perform a guest voice recital Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall.

The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission and features works by Manuel de Falla, Henri Duparc, Franz Liszt, Richard Strauss and Hugo Wolf.

Faculty Dance Performance, Hamp

"Loss, the Great Escape and Other Memories" will be performed Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Studio II, Center for the Arts. It is an evening of dance solos choreographed and performed by Amanda Hamp. The project is supported by an award from the H. George and Jutta F. Anderson faculty development fund. Admission is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the performance.

CSS: The Passing Zone Sept. 17

The Passing Zone, an award winning comedic juggling duo, will kickoff Luther's 2011-12 Center Stage Series with a performance Saturday, Sept. 17, 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther campus. Tickets for the performance are on sale at the Box Office, 387-1357. Tickets are $25, $23 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18.

Faculty Artist Series: Martin and Hu

Spencer Martin and Xiao Hu will perform a faculty recital for piano and viola Sunday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall.

The program, open to the public with no charge for admission, includes Bach's Sonata in G Minor for viola and harpsichord with accompanist Kathryn Reed, harpsichord.

College Night Sept. 19

Northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota high school students and their parents are invited to College Night on Monday, Sept. 19, 6:30-8 p.m. in the SRC, Regents Center. Luther College Woman's Club Sept. 20

Kristen Underwood, founder of Upstart Crowe Theatre Works and ArtHaus will present at the next Luther College Woman's Club meeting Tuesday, Sept. 20. Underwood's program "The History Walk: Bringing the Past to Life Through Theatre" is at 1:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room.

NAA fall sports luncheon Sept. 22

The Norse Athletic Association's fall sports luncheon will be held at noon Thursday, Sept. 22 in Peace Dining Room. Cost is $5.

The Norse Athletic Association was formed in 2007 to meet the increasing costs associated with running an NCAA Division III athletic program. 'Music in the Shape of a Pear'

Luther's semi-annual "Music in the Shape of a Pear" concert series, directed by Brooke Joyce, continues in September with a sesquicentennial concert titled "Luther Composers" Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Welcome new staff/faculty

Please welcome Eric Holthaus in a two-year position as Energy and Waste Steward. He joins Dan Bellrichard in the Campus and Sustainability Office.

Jodi Meyer-Mork joins the Luther faculty as an assistant professor of education. She holds the bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Northern Iowa.

Erik Grayson joins the Luther faculty as a visiting assistant professor in English. Grayson holds the bachelor's degree from St. Olaf College, the master's degree from McGill University and the doctoral degree from Binghamton University.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

In August, Eric Kutz completed his 14th summer as a cellist with the Grant Park Orchestra in Chicago. Kutz performed 28 concerts on 19 different programs during the 10-week Grant Park Music Festival in Millennium Park. This summer included the release of Kutz's eighth CD recording with the orchestra. The CD, "The Pulitzer Project," included three early winners of the Pulizter Prize in music: works by William Schuman, Leo Sowerby and Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring."  The disc is on the Cedille record label.

Jon Christy was recently invited to join an advisory board, for a three-year term, charged with providing formative and summative assessment to colleges/ universities recently awarded Teagle Foundation "Engaging Evidence" grants. Summary of the grants at: http://www.teaglefoundation.org/grantmaking/grantees/engagingevidence.aspx. The advisory board held their first meeting Aug. 28-30 at the Center of Inquiry in the Liberal Arts, Wabash College.

Amy Engelsdorfer presented a paper, "Open and Affirming: Music and Inclusiveness in the United Church of Christ," at the Christian Congregational Singing: Local and Global Perspectives conference at Ripon College Cuddesdon on Sept. 4.

Brett Johnson's co-authored article "Lifestyle Movements: Exploring the Intersection of Lifestyle and Social Movement" has been accepted for publication in the journal Social Movement Studies. It explores collectivities that actively promote a lifestyle, or way of life, as the primary means to foster social change.

Amy Weldon has published an essay, "Money and a Room: One Woman Gets Real," in the New Haven Review and a review of Daisy Hay's "Young Romantics" in Keats-Shelley Journal. Other short fiction and creative nonfiction is forthcoming in the online journals Fiction Southeast and A River and Sound Review.

Weldon presents her 'yarden' Sept. 17

Amy Weldon is part of a free garden tour associated with the annual "digIN" green expo event in Decorah. Starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, the garden/ "yarden" tour will make five stops to demonstrate a variety of approaches to growing food in your own backyard.
