Coronavirus updates

Each week, we will use this section to highlight key messages to various members of the Luther community and summarize developments and decisions over the past week. Whenever possible, we will also signal forthcoming messages.

Academic Calendar
Start and stop dates for the 2020-21 academic year were announced. Course schedules for September Term, Fall Quarter 1 and Fall Quarter 2 will be released on June 1. Returning students will make adjustments to their fall course registrations between June 1 and June 12.

Summer dining
Starting Tuesday, May 26, the Grab and Go window will be closed. We will be serving breakfast, lunch and dinner in Marty's for the summer where you can have taco Tuesday every week. There will be a daily special for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Summer hours are 8 a.m.-9 a.m. (breakfast), 12 p.m.-1 p.m. (lunch) and 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. (dinner).

Virtual Commencement
The Virtual Commencement ran live on Luther College's Facebook page on Sunday, May 24. If you missed it or want to revisit it, you can watch the full ceremony or any part of it on our website.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Union Flashing project

The work on the Union is in phase one of two. The project entails repairing window flashings - removing windows and brick above and below them, installing new flashings, waterproofing, air barriers and new insulation. The existing windows will be reinstalled with new gaskets/seals. We are also repairing stone near the main entrance where the gutter was not directing water away from the building and the tunnel connection between the CFL and Union. Phase two will be completed next year.

Dike Road work to begin

We expect to see our contractor begin work next week on Dike Road and the Athletic Field Levee. This work will result in a FEMA 100 year accredited levee system for lower campus. The work to raise the levee all happens on the landward side, not impacting the existing floodway. This will move Dike Road toward campus as the new concrete road will be centered on top of the levee.

Sign up for the June wellness screening: Updated provider and date

During 2020, employees and spouses covered by the Luther College health care plan have additional wellness benefits and requirements. Sign up for the Tuesday, June 16, blood screenings with Gunderson here on campus by contacting <wellness>. 

Take Me Out to the Ballgame!

While the major league teams are still debating whether to play ball, Luther is inviting you to join our summer fitness program, TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME! This is a fun baseball-oriented game where you can score a home run from the comfort of your home! The program begins on June 1 and runs through the end of July. For more information or to sign up to play, contact <wellness>.

Messages of prayer and care for Wellington Place

This week we'll be reaching out to residents and staff at Wellington Place in Decorah. If you or someone you love lives or works at Wellington Place and would like to get a message of care and prayer from College Ministries, send the resident or employee's first and last name to <ministry>. If you missed sending names for prayer for Eastern Star or Aase Haguen in previous weeks, send us those too!

Book Shop news

Greeting cards available
The Book Shop has greeting cards set up outside of the Book Shop. Graduation, birthday, sympathy and encouragement cards are all available for $2.50. Leave cash in the basket.

No-touch key chain available
The Book Shop has just received a new key chain that is anti-microbial brass plated. It has a hook for opening doors, a stylus tip to avoid contact with public touch screens and of course, it says Luther College. You can purchase one from the table outside the Book Shop by leaving $5.50 in the basket.

Submissions requested for Intersectional Feminist Club Monologues 2020

The new Intersectional Feminist Club Monologues 2020 is looking for Luther students, staff or faculty (of any gender expression) to write a brief piece about their experiences, struggles and triumphs with their body, gender, intersectionality or their sexuality. We will also accept visual interpretations. This is in an effort to broaden the stories that are told through the monologues and show a diverse set of experiences. Authors may choose if they would like their name published or if they would like to remain anonymous. Please fill the form to add your submission or email <valdpa01>.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Dan Davis, together with colleague Michael Brennan, published an article in the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology titled "The Knidos Q and Marmaris D Shipwrecks: two small vessels with Rhodian pottery from the Late Ottoman Period." The article is one of several already published or in the works that analyzes the 36 ancient and medieval shipwrecks discovered by the Nautilus expeditions in the Aegean and Black Sea (2010-2013).

Jim Martin-Schramm presented "Solar to Storage" during a webinar hosted by the Winneshiek Energy district on May 19, 2020. 

Kim Powell and Amber Sorenson '20 presented their paper on dealing with grief following shaken baby syndrome at the International Communication Association Conference in Australia (virtually due to COVID19). A version of this paper titled "Ambiguous loss after shaken baby syndrome/abusive head trauma: Parental management of dialectical contradictions of grief" is published in the academic journal "Communication Quarterly." This project was supported by a summer student/faculty collaborative research grant.

Rob Larson's summary and narration of his research "Student Debt and Cost of Attendance as a Predictor of College Enrollment" was posted on "The Academic Minute: A WAMC National Production," programming by WAMC Northeast Public Radio that is distributed to National Public Radio Stations nationwide. His and the research of other academics can be found at www.academicminute.org.

Ideas and Creations

In "Golf as Life: Coaching During a Pandemic," David Lester, head women's golf coach, describes what it's like to coach during the pandemic. Even though his team can't play right now, he knows they're going to be just fine through all of this and make a big impact in their world after college.

COVID-19 has produced some form of anxiety for many of us. In "Anxiety in this COVID Time (Or Anytime)," Paul Gardner, professor emeritus, talks about how he manages his concerns about the pandemic and other potentially stressful situations.
