Call for nominations for College Resource Council
The College Resource Council seeks a staff member with budget center responsibility, or past responsibility, to serve as a staff representative to CRC. Appointed by the President, the staff representative will serve a three-year term. All staff are invited to nominate an individual to fill this vacancy. Self-nominations are welcome as well. Send nominations to Sally Ming, <mingsa01> by Friday, Sept. 6. CRC serves as a forum for the discussion and study of major college-wide issues. It provides an opportunity for representative members of the faculty and staff to serve in an advisory role to the administration of the college, especially in matters of long-range planning, resource allocation and in the preparation of the budget.
Please attend the Sophomores on the Commons CFL Program
Faculty, staff, students, emeriti and guests are invited to join sophomore students for a program celebrating the completion of the first year of college and highlighting the opportunities available to Luther sophomores at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, in the CFL. Student, faculty and alumni speakers will share insights they would go back and give to their sophomore selves to kick off a year of exploration, reflection and planning for sophomore students. Offices are encouraged to close, if possible, so all may attend the program.
Luther Football sophomores - California send off
Faculty, staff, students, emeriti and guests are invited to gather in front of the CFL at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5 to cheer on the Luther football team as they embark for a road game in California. The send off will be the connection sophomore football players have to the Sophomores on the Commons event which will immediately follow.

Women's Basketball Junior Norse Clinic
The Luther College Women's Basketball team is offering four weeks for girls in 1st-5th grades to join them for Junior Norse clinics. The clinics will be held on Thursdays, 6:15 p.m.-7:30 p.m. in the Regents Center North Gym. Dates are Sept. 19, 26 and Oct. 3, 10. Register online.
Back to school, back to the pool
Decorah Masters Swimming is back with our fall practice schedule starting Sunday, Sept. 1. Practice will be held Sundays at 4 p.m., Tuesdays at 6 a.m., Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. and Fridays at 6 a.m.. Price is $120 for our three month season (or $50/month). Luther faculty and staff are eligible for a Luther Wellness discount. Decorah Masters is open to all Luther faculty, staff and students, as well as community members, who can comfortably swim at least a pool length freestyle. Not Quite Free Lunch Sept. 10
Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the Nobel Room, sponsored by Wellness. Luther employee fitness classes

Wellness is hosting a massage therapist on campus for $20/15 minute chair massages, paid by cash, check or card at appointment or booking, from 1-5 p.m. every Monday afternoon! Chair massages can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy-improving productivity, decrease anxiety and enhance immune system function. United Way campaign begins
United Way of Winneshiek County is excited to announce the 2019 campaign goal of $130,000 which will help support 16 local, non-profit agencies in Winneshiek County. Because every board member is a volunteer, 100% of the money raised during campaign stays in Winneshiek County and is allocated back to the supported agencies. Fall Semester Opening Convocation Sept. 5
Celebrate the start of a new academic year and welcome the class of 2023 at Opening Convocation at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, in the CFL. The convocation speaker is Francisco Cantú, author of "The Line Becomes a River," the summer 2019 reading. He became a US border patrol agent, and over the next four years, he policed drug routes and smuggling corridors and tracked lost migrants across the desert. Now the author of a memoir about his experiences, he speaks with urgency, honesty and empathy about how the border wreaks violence on both sides of the line.
"RACE: Are We So Different?" Sept. 10
Luther presents the exhibit "RACE: Are We So Different?" as an educational opportunity and the kick-off event to a year-long conversation on racism. Experience the opening of the award-winning exhibit 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the CFA atrium. The original "RACE: Are We So Different?" exhibit is housed in the Science Museum of Minnesota, but now Luther is inviting the campus community, local schools and the public to visit a condensed version of the exhibition. It will be open, by appointment, through the fall 2019 semester.
The Evolving Role of Sport in Developing Resilience Sept. 12
How can we ensure youth develop resilience? Historically, organized sports have played an important role in helping participants develop methods to cope with loss, injury and self-doubt. Sports also provide a platform to practice goal setting, positive self-talk and mental toughness. Join head wrestling coach, Dave Mitchell, for a discussion of the role of sports in building resilience and producing other life-long benefits at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the CRH. Guest lecture: Youth and Class Struggle in 1970s Mexico Sept. 17
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Dr. Herrera-Calderon from UNI will be presenting "Youth and Class Struggle in 1970s Mexico" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the CFL Recital Hall. Herrera-Calderon will speak on the relationship between class and armed resistance in 1970s Mexico. He explores how working-class youth established themselves into a powerful political force against the authoritarian Mexican state. The event is co-sponsored by the history department and Latines Unides.

Positions
Director of the Career Center (1.0 FTE): Director to report to the Vice President and Dean for Student Life and visibly and collaboratively engage with the key departments and programs to ensure students are poised for success in their transition from Luther into life and career. In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Integrated Academic and Career Development, the Career Center staff, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, employers and friends of Luther College, the director is responsible for initiating, overseeing and expanding opportunities and resources designed to support students' self-sufficiency in the career development process. The director champions students to develop the skills and habits needed for vocational discernment and professional readiness. A Master's or PhD degree or equivalent in college student personnel, counseling, higher education or a related field, with special knowledge of career development process and principles related to outreach and marketing is required. A minimum of four years' experience in college career development services (required related academic, student life or business experience may be considered); supervisory experience strongly preferred.
Data Entry Coordinator (.80 FTE, benefit eligible): Coordinator works 32 hours per week to perform extensive data entry of new student information into admissions database. Duties will include generating a number of physical communications, including acceptance letters, scholarship notifications and various letters of correspondence. Coordinator will also answer phones and perform a variety of operational tasks for the Admissions Office. Qualified candidates have a high school diploma or equivalent, are proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, and have a working knowledge of computer technology. One-year experience in a comparable office position preferred. Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail are preferred. Supervisory experience is very helpful.

The second edition of Todd Green's book, "The Fear of Islam: An Introduction to Islamophobia in the West," was released today, Sept. 3, by Fortress Press. It is available for purchase in the Luther Book Shop. The new edition contains updated material on anti-Muslim hate crimes, the intersection of Islamophobia and white nationalism, Islamophobia in the 2015-16 presidential elections and the recent growth in anti-Muslim legislation, including the Muslim ban in the United States and full-face veil bans in Europe.
Dr. Rebecca Shaw '71, originally from Decorah, was named a 2019 Women of Influence Honoree by Business Record. Shaw is currently an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Des Moines University where she enjoys being able to inspire and educate future physicians. She is recognized by Business Record not only for her work in her field but for her commitment to the communities she served and her dedication to mentoring young physicians.
