ANNOUNCEMENTS

Coronavirus updates

On Friday, July 24, President Ward introduced a new online resource for the Luther College community. The Being Community website will serve as Luther's central repository for educating, learning, and growing toward the ideal of "Being Community" in pandemic. The website includes information about Academics and Student Life and Protection Protocols; an opportunity to submit questions and feedback; and features the following ethos:

"BEING COMMUNITY"

Many colleges have promoted pledges, compacts, or covenants with certain behavioral requirements. At Luther College, we are not asking people to "take a pledge." Instead, we ask for your cooperation in the spirit of our community's character, our ethos.

This ethos derives from Luther's mission statement: "As a residential college, Luther is a place of intersection. Founded where river, woodland, and prairie meet, we practice joyful stewardship of the resources that surround us, and we strive to be a community where students, faculty, and staff are enlivened and transformed by encounters with one another, by the exchange of ideas, and by the life of faith and learning."

Being a community is central to the mission of Luther College. In this time of global pandemic, we have been called to a new way of being community. Luther is shaped by us.

Being Community Means:

  • PROTECT: We protect each other, heeding the evidence of science, the experiences of healers, and the needs of the most vulnerable.
  • ACCEPT: We accept responsibility for maintaining our own health, knowing that it affects others' health.
  • CREATE: We create new ways to connect. We seek new solutions.
  • RESPECT: We strive for our common goals with respect for each person. We stand against any form of bias and discrimination.

In addition, last week the college released guidance for employees on the return to campus. Directors and department heads are asked to provide a planning document to their vice president by July 31.
