Open enrollment meetings
Annual open enrollment meetings will be held 3:15–4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, and 9:15–10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union. Representatives from Marsh and McLennan Agency will be there to answer questions and explain changes to the health care plan. Please attend as you can. Watch campus mail for packets with the open enrollment booklets and an informational letter.

Inside Money: Managing Income and Debt Workshop–hosted by TIAA
Everyone talks about a budget, but how many of us actually make and stick to one? Most people have some debt, but how many understand its effects? Let TIAA show you the real impact of both—and help you understand how your money can work for you. Adobe CC Update Nov. 5
ITS will begin implementing the new Adobe licensing model for faculty/staff workstations on Tuesday, Nov. 5. If your workstation is affected, you will be notified through the normal patching process. It only takes a moment and does not require a reboot. Once implemented, choose to "Sign in with an Enterprise ID," using your Luther email address. For details, visit Adobe Creative Cloud.
Peace Scholar information session Nov. 12
Faculty and staff are asked to encourage sophomores and juniors interested in peace, conflict, and dialogue studies to attend an information session about the Peace Scholar program 9:45–10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Olin 214. Three Peace Scholars alumni will discuss their experiences in the program. Each year, two Luther students are selected to spend six weeks at the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Lillehammer and the University of Oslo Summer School.

Luther College Women's Club to meet Nov. 19
Study abroad in Tanzania will be the focus Tuesday, Nov. 19, when Luther faculty member Lori (Van Gerpen) Stanley '80, Luther staff member Emily Neal, and Luther students Kari Preus '21 and Nick Lembezeder '21 present "Tanzania: People, Parks, and Pastoralism" at the Luther College Women's Club meeting. The meeting takes place at 1:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union. Shuttle service from the Decorah pool lot leaves at 1:10 p.m.
Dorian Keyboard Festival
57 piano students will be attending the Dorian Keyboard Festival on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9. Most events take place in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Students will have a chance to attend the Des Moines Symphony Concert, play a solo for a Luther faculty member's feedback, hear Luther College students and faculty pianists perform, and perform in student honors recitals.
Office 2019 available
Office 2019 is now available for faculty/staff Windows workstations. To start the upgrade, login to help.luther.edu with your Norse Key, click on "Downloads" and select "Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2019 (Windows)." Before you click "Run Now," confirm that the correct workstation number appears in "Device to install software on." The process takes approximately 20 minutes. Contact the Technology Help Desk with questions.

'Decoding the Driftless' screening and Q&A with producer Nov. 5
"Decoding the Driftless," an award-winning adventure documentary film about the Driftless Region, will be screened 7–8:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Olin 102. A brief Q&A with George Howe, the producer of the film, will follow the 60-minute film. The screening is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Guest lecture: Daoud Nassar, 'We Refuse to Be Enemies' Nov. 7
Daoud Nassar is the founder of the Tent of Nations (TON), a peace center located on his family's 100-acre working farm near Bethlehem in the West Bank. At 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in the CRH, Nassar will describe his family's experiences with the Israeli government and private developers who wish to take control of the farm to build additional Jewish settlements. His visit is sponsored by the ELCA Peace Not Walls Working Group, the Friends of TON North America, and the CEPE.
30 Years since the fall of the Berlin Wall Nov. 8
Join us 4-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in Main 114 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. There will be a lecture summarizing the event and its significance for today as well as short presentations by individuals on how they remember November 1989. The audience is invited to share their own memories of that time.
'That's Grieg!' exhibit meet the artist event Nov. 8
Robyn Sand Anderson '79 received the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council's 2018 Individual Artist Grant with the McKnight Foundation to travel to Bergen, Norway, to immerse herself in the home, music and environment of 19th-century composer Edvard Grieg. Using that inspiration, Sand Anderson created interpretations of color, texture and movement that capture the incredible beauty of Norway. The exhibit opened Oct. 25 in the Upstairs Gallery of the CFL and closes Nov. 22. Meet the artist from 6–7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at the gallery before the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra performs Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor at 7:30 p.m.
CSS: Des Moines Symphony Orchestra Nov. 8
The Des Moines Symphony Orchestra travels to Luther's Center for Faith and Life to pay homage to northeast Iowa's rich cultural heritage. Their program features world-renowned Canadian pianist Jon Kimura Parker and includes, among other pieces, the iconic Piano Concerto in A Minor by Edvard Grieg and Symphony No. 8 in G Major by Antonín Dvorák. Texts and Issues Lecture: 'Education and the Ho-Chunk: Resistance and Resilience' Nov. 12
David Faldet and Anna Peterson will present the second lecture of the 2019 Paideia Texts and Issues series on the theme "Resistance and Resilience." They will focus on aspects of the history of the Winnebago/Ho-Chunk removal, a study of resistance that often forced choices between physical survival and cultural survival. The lecture will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the CFL Recital Hall. Reception to follow in Qualley Lounge.
Kevin Hines presents '#BeHereTomorrow' Nov. 19
At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, Kevin Hines will present "#BeHereTomorrow" in the Main Gym of Regents Center at Luther College. Hines is part of the 1% of people who survive a fall from the Golden Gate Bridge. Since his suicide attempt in 2000, Hines has devoted his time to traveling the world to share his story of hope, healing and recovery while teaching people of all ages the art of wellness and the ability to survive pain with true resilience.

John T. Cord released an impressive, collaborative album titled "Beyond Borders." Each selection found on this album is delivered by a different assembly of outstanding musicians. More than 20 instrumentalists and vocalists contributed to this album including Luther College faculty members and talented students. "Beyond Borders" was released on the Mark Records Label in Nov. 2018 and is available on iTunes, Amazon, NAXOS Digital Library and the Luther College Bookshop.
Kristy Gould and Jamie Linert '17 are co-authors, along with colleagues at Drake University, Bucknell University and University of California-Davis, on a collaborative research project published in the Journal of Comparative Psychology titled "Smaller on the Left? Flexible Association Between Space and Magnitude in Pigeons (Columba livia) and Blue Jays (Cyanocitta cristata)."

It's not too late to get in on National Novel Writing Month!
Have you ever thought about writing a book, but couldn’t find the willpower to dive in? Well, here’s your sign to do it now. National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo, is a month designated to writers taking time out of each day to add to their story, so they can start and finish writing a novel in just 30 days. The goal is to take a fun, creative approach to creative writing, while giving it a time limit to make sure you finish what you start!
How to observe
Try to write your own novel. Use #NovelWritingMonth to post on social media. If you want to get serious about it, you can actually register online. Otherwise, you can take it a little less seriously without registering, just to put your creative writing skills to the test. The only rule is, you must start your novel after November 1, and have it finished by 11:59 pm on November 30. There are plenty of online resources available to help you wrap your mind around how to get started.
Don't let the English Department have all the fun!
