ANNOUNCEMENTS

Coronavirus updates

Please continue to monitor the Health Advisories webpage for information connected to Luther College’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Iowa Department of Public Health, and answers to frequently asked questions.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Closing out the fiscal year

The college's fiscal year ended May 31. All outstanding travel expense reports, credit card reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders/purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to OFS by June 12 to be included in FY 19-20 budget. Items for deposit that were in Luther's possession by May 31 should be brought to OFS immediately. Call with questions and as always, thank you for helping OFS close the year in a timely manner.

HR update

Luther College partners with PlanPILOT as our TIAA retirement fiduciary advisor. PlanPILOTs’ Bill Karsten and Tom Loftus have created an educational presentation that focuses on budgeting and building an emergency fund before focusing on retirement planning. They next focus on building an appropriate long-term investment strategy. See Securing Your Future.

Agora online

Because of a freeze on spending at the college, Agora will not be distributing print copies until further notice. The spring 2020 edition of Agora, featuring essays by Anita Carrasco, Wanda Deifelt, Angela Kueny and Jon Jensen, is now available online.

Luther receives $100,000 grant from The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation

The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation awarded a grant of $100,000 to Luther in honor of Marriott International CEO and Luther alumnus, Arne Sorenson '80, who recently completed his third term and final year of service on the Luther College Board of Regents. The grant will help to ensure recipients of the Morris A. Sorenson Family Scholarship have the necessary financial resources to fully engage with experiential learning (e.g., internship, service learning trip, collaborative research fellowship) and other high-impact experiences as part of their liberal arts education.

Gratitude for connection through prayer

Thanks to all who have emailed names of residents and staff at Eastern Star, Aase Haugen and Wellington Place; the College Ministries team will continue to pray for folks by name and as a community throughout the summer. Send requests for messages of prayer and care to <ministry> and look for periodic posts on the Luther College Ministries Facebook page to join us in prayer.

Library checkouts now available

The library building remains closed, but checkout service is now available to the Luther College community. Request titles by clicking the "Place Hold" button now available on each item owned by Luther College in the library's online catalog, or send a list of titles to <library>. Once your items are pulled, you will receive a "Hold Shelf" notice that includes options on how to arrange a pickup time via appointment at the library entrance or request campus mail delivery.

Union Flashing project

The work on the Union is in phase one of two. The project entails repairing window flashings - removing windows and brick above and below them, installing new flashings, waterproofing, air barriers and new insulation. The existing windows will be reinstalled with new gaskets/seals. We are also repairing stone near the main entrance where the gutter was not directing water away from the building and the tunnel connection between the CFL and Union. Phase two will be completed next year.

Dike Road work to begin

We expect to see our contractor begin work next week on Dike Road and the Athletic Field Levee. This work will result in a FEMA 100 year accredited levee system for lower campus. The work to raise the levee all happens on the landward side, not impacting the existing floodway. This will move Dike Road toward campus as the new concrete road will be centered on top of the levee.

Electronic signatures in Adobe Acrobat

Did you know that Adobe Acrobat can be used to create, distribute and track signable PDF files? Recipients can sign even if they don’t have Acrobat. Learn more at the Technology Help Desk's Adobe CC page.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

And finally...

“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality....I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”

-Martin Luther King, Jr.
