Road construction

Next week road work will be happening around Luther's campus. Please make note of the following schedule:

• College Drive will be closed for milling Monday and Tuesday from Luther's North Entrance south to Casey's. Asphalt overlay will happen Wednesday and Thursday. All work is weather dependant. Detour for local traffic will be through lower campus.
• Ridge Road will have saw cutting on damaged areas the week of Oct. 21 and will be closed for construction from College Drive to Meadow Court starting Oct. 28.
• North Street should be opened today, Oct. 18.

Library Fall Break hours

Fri., Oct. 18: 7:30 a.m.–5 p.m.
Sat.-Sun., Oct. 19–20: Closed
Mon.-Tues., Oct. 21-22: 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
Wed., Oct. 23: 8 a.m.–midnight

Lawn spraying Oct. 18

Luther will spray the lawns with herbicides to provide well-maintained, visually attractive grounds for Luther students, employees and visitors, and to control undesirable weeds on athletic fields. Weather permitting, the date for spraying is the evening of Friday, Oct. 18, with Saturday, Oct. 19, and Sunday, Oct. 20, set as back up days as needed. In response to community requests, Facilities Services has established a no-spray "buffer zone" that will be observed around the pool lawn so that the play area for children is protected. Other no-spray "buffer zones" include the dike areas, edible landscape areas and the Sustainability House. Spraying will take place after normal work hours and on weekends. Questions can be directed to Facilities Services at <facilities>.

Residence hall trick-or-treating

Luther community members and their families are invited to trick-or-treat from 5:30–7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, in the three first year residence halls. Participating rooms will be identified by a pumpkin on the door. There will be crafts in the Brandt Hall lounge, cookie decorating in the Olson Hall Main Lounge and games in Ylvisaker. 

All Saints Chapel name submissions

All Saints Chapel will be 10:30–10:50 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, in the CFL. This annual All Saints Chapel is an opportunity to gather as a community to celebrate the joy of new life and grieve the loss of loved ones. We include name(s) of immediate family/household members who are born or adopted in the past year and those who have passed away since Nov. 1, 2018. Please send names to College Ministries so we can include them in our All Saints Chapel bulletin. Send names or questions via email to <ministry> or by phone 387-1040.

Tuition Benefit program deadline Nov. 1

Luther is pleased to offer its faculty and staff a benefit that is highly unique in today's workplace: higher education for one's dependents. The Tuition Benefit program has a three-step application process available online.

Deadlines are as follows:

Dec. 1: Finalized list of colleges due
May 15: Confirmation form due

Staff Day Tuesday, Oct. 22

The event will begin in the Jenson-Noble Recital Hall (NRH). Doors will open at 10:45 a.m., with the Minute to Win It Showdown starting promptly at 11 a.m. A great lunch will be served at noon in Peace Dining Room. Promptly at 1 p.m., the main event will begin with keynote speaker Jenny Evans. An author and on-air expert on resiliency, stress, confidence and human performance, Jenny brings over 20 years of experience as a certified exercise nutritionist. "Jenny's events are active, engaging, high-energy and life-changing – leaving audiences inspired, informed and on their way to leading a more productive life in increasingly demanding business environments." This event is funded through staff development and the President's Office. All staff should plan to attend. The final event is at 3 p.m. Previous Staff Excellence Award recipients will share a few highlights of their trips and President Ward will reveal the 2019 Staff Excellence Award recipients.

Luther Junior Cheer Clinic on Saturday, Oct. 26

Children in grades K-5 are invited to be a cheerleader for a day! Luther College cheerleaders will teach jumps, kicks, stunts and a fun dance that will be performed during halftime of the Luther home football game. Annual music homecoming awards

Luther College is honored to present the Noble, Sperati, Presser and Hemp awards this 2019 Homecoming season. Dr. John M. Broman '69 is the Noble award recipient. Timothy Arnold ‘04, is the 2019 recipient of the Dr. Carlo A. Sperati award. Luther College senior, Jackson Churchill, of Duluth, Minnesota is the 2019 Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award recipient.  Luther College senior, Luke Berkley, of Owatonna, Minnesota is the 2019 recipient of the Hemp Family Prize.

United Way campaign continues

Thank you to everyone who has donated to United Way and congratulations to our first prize winner, Chelle Meyer, who won a 30-minute chair massage from Wellness. We are 15% of the way to our $13,850 goal. Continue to return donations to HR and help us do more to support Winneshiek County families and individuals. Next week's prize is a swag bag donated by Alumni and Development, the drawing for that will be on Friday.

Oneota Market limited hours Oct. 22

Oneota Market will have limited hours on Tuesday, Oct. 22, to allow their staff to attend the All Staff Day activities. Oneota will be open from 7:30–10 a.m.

Luther faculty, students to speak Oct. 15 at Luther College Woman's Club meeting

International connection and exploration will be the focus on Oct. 15 when Maren Johnson, Luther assistant professor of Nordic studies and Levi Bird '21 present "Reacting to the Past," and siblings Hallie Johnson '23 and Erik Johnson '20 explore "Teens' Perspective on Scandinavia and Europe." The meeting takes place at 1:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room in the Union. Shuttle service from the Decorah pool lot leaves at 1:10 p.m.

"A View from the North Country," a collection of recent essays, short stories and poems written by Jerry Johnson, retired Luther director of public information, is now available at Luther Book Shop. The new book is the sixth in a series of anthologies about life in the North Country of the upper Midwest.
