Seeking Building Marshal volunteers

The Emergency Response Team seeks volunteers to serve as Building Marshals in non-residential campus buildings. Building Marshals are current members of the faculty and/or staff who agree to assist during safety related events within their building. They might assist with the evacuation of buildings during fire alarms, help with the implementation of emergency procedures or serve as a first point of contact in an emergency if Campus Safety and Security is not readily available. Those who volunteer for the program should have a work schedule that places them in their respective areas when the building has the heaviest use. Fill out this form if you are willing to volunteer to be a Building Marshal.

Increased security presence

Following the recent hate act on campus, we have arranged for additional coverage at key times by Luther Campus Safety and Security, and Decorah Police have increased their presence on our campus. As the investigation remains open and active, the community is strongly encouraged to share any information on the incident with Campus Safety and Security at 387-2111.

Upcoming training session for Luther's prescribed fire crew

Interested in being on Luther's prescribed fire crew? Attend a burn crew training session at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, in Valders 262. Get out and enjoy Luther's natural areas in the spring while participating in spring volunteer events including prescribed burns and garlic mustard control. Email Molly McNicoll, <mcnimo01>, to receive emails regarding these opportunities. Students, faculty, staff and community members are welcome to participate.

Upgrade to network software March 30

Beginning at 7 a.m. Friday March 30, ITS will upgrade the Network Sentry software which manages access to the Network. The work is expected to be complete by 8 a.m. During the upgrade, users will be unable to connect to the LCWireless, LCSecure and LCWireless5G wireless networks, but the LCGuest network will remain accessible. Most wired network access will remain operational.

Federal Income Tax withholding form update

The IRS released the 2018 Form W-4 and an updated Withholding Calculator to help employees determine proper withholding amounts. Completed 2017 tax returns and year-to-date 2018 pay advices from my.luther may be helpful for employees using the Withholding Calculator. The IRS is urging the following taxpayer groups to check their withholding and, if necessary, complete a new W-4:

Two-income families.
Those with two or more jobs at the same time or who only work part of the year.
Those with children who claim credits such as the Child Tax Credit.
Those who itemized deductions in 2017.
Those with high incomes and more complex tax returns.

Questions about 2018 federal income tax withholding may be answered by the IRS Withholding Calculator Frequently Asked Questions list. Updated W-4 forms, if necessary, should be submitted to the Payroll Office, 387-1135.

Changes to HSA contributions

The 2018 contribution limit for health savings accounts linked to family coverage will be $6,850—not $6,900, as the IRS previously announced. The IRS recalculated the limit because the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that passed at the end of 2017 applies the so-called"chained consumer price index" to increases in HSA and a few other employee benefit contribution limits. The IRS released this notice March 5. Please contact HR/Payroll if an adjustment to HSA payroll deductions is needed.

Lynda.com sessions

Through the end of the spring semester, Luther is piloting the campus-wide Lynda.com product called LyndaCampus. Faculty, staff and students may visit lynda.luther.edu and sign in with their Norse Key. Training sessions are offered Thursday, March 22, in Hovde Room: 2-2:30 p.m. "Lynda.com - An Introduction," and 2:45-3:15 p.m. "Lynda.com-For Instructors." Attend one or both sessions. Need a wellness massage break on Monday?

Wellness is hosting a massage therapist on campus for $1/minute chair massages, paid by cash, check or card at appointment, from 1-5 p.m. every other Monday in Bunch or Borlaug through May. Chair massages can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy-improving productivity, decrease anxiety and enhance immune system function. New this summer: Dorian Choral Retreat

The Dorian Choral Retreat, in its inaugural year, will be hosted this summer at Luther from June 29 through July 1. This event, available to anyone interested who is at least 19 years of age, has a fee of $100 with no on-campus housing over the retreat, or $150 for a single, air-conditioned room Friday and Saturday night on campus. A $10 discount is offered to people who are coming with a roommate.

Krahn Family Student Life Service Award

Nominations for the Krahn Family Student Life Service Award must be for current sophomore and junior students who have demonstrated a strong contribution to campus life in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College. Any student, faculty or staff member may nominate a student. This award is designed to recognize a student who makes a positive impact on student life. The $1,000 award is expected to be over and above any financial assistance a student receives. The nomination form can be found here. Nominations due by April 4.

Kuh Family 'Positively Luther' Award

The Kuh Family "Positively Luther" award is given each year to a student whose character, leadership and participation in co-curricular and other educationally purposeful activities enhance the quality of campus life. The recipient must be in good academic standing with a demonstrated need for financial assistance. This $5,000 award is expected to be over and above the financial aid package offered by Luther. Students may apply for this award through April 4.

CEPE spring book groups, round 2

There are more conversations to be had with new book group offerings. Topics span religion, politics, the environment and more, with a few of the authors coming to campus (and a few groups meeting at Pulpit Rock). Books are provided. To learn more and to sign up, visit cepe.

Employee Wellness spring second session fitness class registration

Sign up for the second six-week session spring classes of wellness subsidized employee Fitness Classes starting the week of April 9. Details and the registration form are available on the online fitness class site. Classes are open to current employees and their spouses. Email <wellness> with any questions.

Mitchell to discuss hidden gems of classical music March 20

In a time when major orchestras, opera houses and art organizations are facing financial struggles, the classical music genre is also struggling to remain relevant with the current generation. Luther alumni guest lecturer Evan Mitchell '14, will re-examine some of the hidden gems of classical music during his lecture, "Revolutionary: An Etude of African-American Classical Music Composers," at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, in the Mott Room.

Ailabouni and Kaufmann to perform March 20

Featuring all original compositions, Jon Ailabouni will perform a trumpet recital with guest pianist James J. Kaufmann at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, in Noble Recital Hall. The performance includes original compositions by both performers. Ailabouni's compositions include "Super(hero) Song," "We Will Meet Again," and "Head Dive." Kaufmann's featured works include "Golberg Bossa," "Tsure Naki" and "Love Dance."

Final Paideia Texts and Issues lecture March 20

David Kamm and Lise Kildegaard will discuss strangeness and art in the final Paideia Texts and Issues lecture of the 2017-18 series at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, in the CFL Recital Hall. A reception will follow in Qualley Lounge. Kamm and Kildegaard will discuss how works of art can help to confront and address challenges of violence, hatred and racism. Kamm created a series of pieces, using re-purposed materials such as hate literature and bullet shells, that encompass the tragedy and horror that seems to be a constant in daily news, while leaving room for beauty. As an interactive event, Kamm and Kildegaard will explore how art can further the progress of change.

Violinist Dan Auerbach to perform March 21

Recognized for his performances across the U.S., Canada and Israel, visiting concert violinist Dan Auerbach will give a recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, in Noble Recital Hall. Auerbach will perform Bach's "Partita in D Minor for Solo Violin" BWV 1004 in five movements. Known for its lengthy chaconne, this piece emerged from a period in Bach's career in which he was exploring the "church sonata" form, possibly inspired by Arcangelo Corelli's work.

Symphony Orchestra spring concert March 22

Luther's Symphony Orchestra presents their spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in the CFL. The program features Julius Conus's "Concerto for Violin in E minor" with violin soloist senior Elizabeth Shoemaker, a winner of the Department of Music 2017 Concerto Competition. Symphony Orchestra will also perform "The Firebird" 1919 Concert Suite by Igor Stravinsky.

NAA lunch April 4

Luther's Norse Athletic Association invites the Decorah Community to Pulpit Rock Brewery at noon Wednesday, April 4, for the NAA Spring Sports Luncheon. The luncheon, held in the banquet room at Pulpit Rock Brewery, costs $5 per person. All spring sports coaches will speak on their seasons to date. RSVP to Russell Schouweiler, <schoru01>.

Register for Women, Faith, and Finance seminar

Luther is hosting the 14th annual Women, Faith, and Finance seminar at the Hotel Winneshiek Friday, April 6. CSS: 'The Mountaintop' April 6

Center Stage Series and L.A. Theatre Works present "The Mountaintop" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 6, in the CFL Main Hall. Almost exactly 50 years after Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated outside his motel room, L.A. Theatre Works brings its radio-style theatre to Decorah to imagine what may have transpired in that room the night before the assassination. Some mature language is used during the performance. Judah & the Lion tickets on sale

With chart topping hits like "Take It All Back" and "Suit and Jacket," bluegrass-hip hop-rock band Judah & the Lion are touring the U.S. and will make a stop in Decorah to perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, in the Regents Center. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets for the performance are $40 and can be purchased at tickets.luther.edu or via the Luther Ticket Office.

Full-time registrar: Responsible for leadership of the registrar's office, including maintaining student academic records and upholding the academic regulations of the college. Responsibilities include implementation and enforcement of academic policy, maintain student academic records, certification of graduates, evaluate credentials of transfer students, supervision of registration and general oversight of college curriculum program. Master's degree and three years minimum in a higher education setting required.

Full-time admissions communications assistant: The assistant will process inquiries for admissions information, prepare data for entry into integrated software system and coordinate mailings to prospective students. Other duties include managing admissions materials, including ordering, receiving, storing, and sending as well as answering incoming telephone calls and scheduling appointments. Qualified candidates have a high school diploma or equivalent and are proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. One-year experience in a comparable office position preferred.

Derek Sweet's chapter, "America Assemble: The Avengers as Therapeutic Public Memory," appears in the recently published Assembling the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Essays on the Social, Cultural and Geopolitical Domain.

Todd Green delivered a lecture March 12 co-sponsored by the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Islamic Society of San Diego titled "The Rise of the Islamophobia Industry." He also delivered a lecture March 13 for the Forum on Religious Freedom in San Diego titled "Countering Islamophobia: Guiding Principles for Allies of American Muslims."
