Community meeting today
The Luther community, including student organizations and departments across campus, are reminded to attend the second of two community meetings at 1 p.m. today (Tuesday, April 17) in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. This is a time to share actions our community has taken and plans people are making to strengthen our inclusive community at Luther.
Attendees are invited to share their ideas and actions for creating a more inclusive community. President Carlson and members of the cabinet will share the themes and ideas they have gathered from earlier community listening sessions, as well as actions being taken by the President’s Office.

Calling all music fans
Luther's Jazz Orchestra left on tour last Thursday and due to blizzard conditions were only able to perform once. Let's show them some fan love tonight (April 17) at their 7:30 p.m. Homecoming Concert.
Collegiate Chorale suffered a similar fate and did not get to finish out their tour either. Their Homecoming Concert is 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19.
Come support our music friends; both concerts will be held in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.
Distracted Driving Awareness Month
Facilities Services would like to remind campus that April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is promoting awareness of this issue. Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving; such as navigation systems, cell phones, stereos, eating and drinking or just interacting with passengers. Please be aware of these distractions and work to limit them for your safety, and those who you share the road with.
Luther College Hearing Board
The Luther College Hearing Board, which adjudicates significant violations of the Student Code of Conduct, is seeking students to serve as members of next year's board. The application is available online.
Interested students must have a minimum 2.50 GPA and possess maturity, respect for confidentiality and excellent critical thinking skills. More information regarding Board responsibilities and structure is available in the Student Code of Conduct. Contact Kasey Nikkel with questions. Applications are due Friday, April 20.
Lectures and Fine Arts Committee get-together
The Lectures and Fine Arts Committee invites the community to attend a get-together to share programming ideas for next year. The meeting will take place Thursday, April 19, in Nansen Room in Dahl Centennial Union from 9:40 to 10:45 a.m. Beverages and snacks will be served. We meet to help facilitate successful programming and promote collaborations, linked events, and shared publicity wherever possible.

Fleet reminder
As a reminder, please return fleet vehicles to their designated parking area at the time committed to in the reservation. All vehicles should have a full tank of gas and trash removed, etc. Departments may be charged additional fees for failure to adhere to the posted guidelines. Many times vehicles may have more than one user per day. Following the guidelines allows a better experience for all.

Jazz Orchestra to perform Homecoming Concert April 17
The Luther College Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Juan Tony Guzmán, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.The concert is the culmination of the Jazz Orchestra's 2018 Midwest Tour and is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program features a variety of exciting jazz repertoire, including works by Duke Ellington, Oliver Nelson, Don Menza, Mike Tomaro, Pat Metheny and Brazilian masters.
Varsity Band and Wind and Percussion Ensemble Spring Concert April 18
Luther College's Varsity Band and Wind and Percussion Ensemble will perform their spring concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.
The Varsity Band, led by James Fritz, will perform "Fanfare and Flourishes for a Festive Occasion" by James Curnow, "Fandango" composed by Frank Perkins and arranged by Floyd Werle, "Blue and Green Music" by Samuel Hazo, Symphonic Dance No. 3 "Fiesta" by Clifton Williams and "National Emblem" by E. E. Bagley.
Joan deAlbuquerque will take the baton for the Wind and Percussion Ensemble portion of the concert. The program includes "Home Again" by David Gillingham, "English Dances" by Malcolm Arnold, "A Movement for Rosa" by Mark Camphouse and "Barnum and Bailey's Favorite" by Karl King.
Collegiate Chorale to perform Homecoming Concert April 19
The Luther College Collegiate Chorale will perform a homecoming concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The performance, part of the Collegiate Chorale's annual Midwest Tour, is open to the public with no charge for admission. A freewill offering will be collected during the concert.
The 2018 Collegiate Chorale tour program is titled "Prayers for Peace" and includes works by Kim André Arnesen, Moses Hogan, Craig Hella Johnson, Jake Runestad, Nancy Wertsch and more.
Oneota Film Festival April 19-22
Including Academy Award nominated "Heroin(e)," and Luther College Professor Thomas C. Johnson and Luther Director of Visual Media Aaron Lurth's new short film "Marieke," the 2018 Oneota Film Festival will be held April 19-22, on the Luther campus and in downtown Decorah.
Featuring more than 85 films from around the world, the Oneota Film Festival is open to the public. Festival goers may purchase individual day passes for $10 each or an all-access pass that admits them for all three days plus access to the opening night event and the filmmaker's reception for a discounted rate of $25. Tickets and passes are available online at oneotafilmfestival.org.
Luther to host screening of 'Heroin(e)'
Luther College and the Oneota Film Festival are hosting a screening of the documentary "Heroin(e)" at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 21 in Valders Hall of Science Room 206 on the Luther campus. A panel, hosted by Helping Services for Youth and Families, will held following the screening and both the panel and screening are open to the public with no charge for admission.
"Heroin(e)" is a 2017 Academy Award nominated documentary highlighting the efforts of three women working to change the narrative and cycle of drug abuse one person at a time in Huntington, West Virginia.

Cathedral Choir to perform Homecoming Concert April 24
Luther College's Cathedral Choir will perform a homecoming concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in the Center for Faith and Life on Luther's campus. The performance, part of Cathedral Choir's annual Midwest Tour, is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The 2018 Cathedral Choir tour program includes Ola Gjeillo's "The Ground," Jeffrey Ames's "Let Everything That Hath Breath" and Mozart's "Missa brevis in F" K. 192, accompanied by a string ensemble comprised of members from the Luther College Symphony Orchestra.
Philharmonia will present concert April 25
Luther College's Philharmonia will perform a concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on Luther's campus. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Featured music includes Benjamin Britten's "Simple Symphony," Edvard Grieg's "Prelude from the Holberg Suite" and "Elegiac Melodies," Tchaikovsky's "Andante Cantabile for Strings" and Dvorak/Isaac's "Three Slavonic Dances."
Preview Day April 27
Luther College Admissions will hold a Preview Day on Friday, April 27, to give prospective students an introduction to Luther. The day includes a campus tour, an academic department visit, a student activities and services fair, complimentary lunch in Luther's cafeteria, a financial aid session, a current student Q&A session, and a trolley tour of Decorah.
Dirks performs Brudos Family Opera Prize Recital April 28
Emily Dirks '18, is the 2017-18 recipient of the Alan R. and Sally J. Brudos Family Opera Prize. As part of the award, Dirks will perform a recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 28, in the Noble Recital Hall. A reception will follow the performance. Both the recital and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Dirks is the 16th recipient of Luther's annual Alan R. and Sally J. Brudos Family Prize for Opera Performance. The prize carries a $6,000 cash award and was established and funded by a gift from Alan R. and Sally J. Brudos of Atherton, California.Alan Brudos, a 1955 Luther graduate and regent emeritus, is former chair of the Luther Board of Regents.
Dancing with the Luther Stars April 28
Three Luther College staff members paired with three students from Luther's ballroom club go head to head in the annual performance of "Dancing with the Luther Stars."
Inspired by the popular ABC show, the event returns for the third season to bring excitement and friendly rivalry to the Center for Faith and Life at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 28. The event is sponsored by Luther College Ballroom and Swing, Student Senate and SAC Special Events.

Creating Safe Space in the Music Classroom
Guest lecturer Joshua Palkki will address how gender stereotypes appear in choral classrooms as well as musical and social issues involving LGBTQ students in ensembles at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29, in Valders Room 206.
Luther composition students present 'Metropolis' film score April 30
The classic silent film "Metropolis" will spring to life with a newly composed musical score by students at Luther. Directed by Brooke Joyce, Luther composer-in-residence and associate professor of music, the original film will be shown with their original electronic score at 9 p.m. Monday, April 30, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther campus.
The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Community on the Commons May 1

Ted Koppel to give Roslien lecture May 1
Longtime anchor of ABC News' Nightline, Ted Koppel, will give Luther College's 2018 Roslien Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in the CFL Main Hall. The lecture, "Science and Policy: Communication in the Twenty-First-Century World of Fake News," is open to the public with no charge for admission. A question and answer session will follow the lecture.
'UnNatural History' runs now-May 27
"UnNatural History," a series of large-scale photographs depicting the ways humans objectify nature, will be on display in the CFL Gallery now-May 27. The artist, Diane Fox, photographs dioramas in Natural History Museums and by using reflection and including items within the diorama meant to be unseen, Fox explores the disconnect within the human/animal relationship.
'Those Who Can Do Teach' open now-May 27
"Those Who Can Do Teach," a series of mixed-media works by recent Luther alumni art educators, will be on display in the Preus Library through May 27. The artists involved include Micayla Irmiter, '14; Jenna Darsee, Jenny Bonnell and Katie Mathis, '15; Lars Johnson and Robin Schone Hengesteg, '16; and Maxwell Green, '17.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS
Junior Ananda Easley was awarded the Psi Chi Regional Research Award for her collaborative research on the psychological and social development that occurs in middle adulthood and how it correlates with alcohol use. Easley worked with David Bishop, professor of psychology, on her project "Generativity and alcohol consumption in middle adulthood." The Psi Chi Regional Research Award is presented by the International Honor Society in Psychology at the April Midwestern Psychological Association convention in Chicago.
Amy Engelsdorfer's article "The Teachable Moment: Creative Warm-Ups in the Music Theory Classroom," will be published in the spring 2018 issue of Music Theory Pedagogy Online. Her article "When Words Create Music: The Spontaneous Art Song Workshop and its Value in Teaching Improvisation," will be published in volume 32 (2018) of the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy.
Kristy Gould presented research with co-authors Grant Goss '16, Anika Hansen '17, and Nicole Weber '18 titled "Walking Direction and Attentional State Effects on Predator Avoidance Behavior in Eastern Gray Squirrels" at the International Conference on Comparative Cognition in Melbourne Beach, Florida, April 4-7. The research used students from two semesters of Gould's Animal Cognition course as data collectors for the project, giving them hands-on experience collecting data on squirrels on Luther's campus.
Kristy Gould and Jamie Linert '17 were co-authors, along with colleagues at Drake University and Bucknell University, on a collaborative research project presented at the International Conference on Comparative Cognition entitled "SNARC Effect in Pigeons, Blue Jays and Japanese Macaques."
James Hoke's piece "'Playing with Fire': A Feminist Corollary" about pedagogy and safe space was published on April 12 on the peer-reviewed Feminist Studies in Religion blog.
Rachel and David Faldet will speak at the Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Decorah Public Library at 7 p.m. Monday, April 23, at the library. Their topic is "A Royal Watcher and Her Editor: A Report from the Writing Trenches." Conversation and light refreshments will follow the program.
A group of Luther students presented at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research April 5-8, at the University of Central Oklahoma. Professor Lise Kildegaard accompanied the group.
