Chapel this week

Built into the class schedule and rhythm of life at Luther, chapel is a time for the community to gather for song, reflection and fellowship at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the CFL Main Hall. Faculty, staff, students and guests serve as speakers, musicians and artists.

'UnNatural History' runs April 10-May 27

"UnNatural History," a series of large-scale photographs depicting the ways humans objectify nature, will be on display in the CFL Gallery April 10-May 27. The artist, Diane Fox, photographs dioramas in Natural History Museums and by using reflection and including items within the diorama meant to be unseen, Fox explores the disconnect within the human/animal relationship.

Alumna Robinson to present Don Kemp Memorial lecture April 10

Luther alumna Nora Robinson, '08, will serve as the keynote speaker for the annual Don Kemp Memorial lecture at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in Baker Commons. The lecture, which honors the life of Luther social work faculty member Don Kemp, is open to the public with no charge for admission. Kemp served as the director of the social work program at Luther from 1978-97.

Titled "The Business of Social Work," Robinson will speak on how her background as a social work major influences her current career as the owner and strategy director of WithInsight, a consulting firm in the Twin Cities that works with youth nonprofit groups.

Concert Band homecoming concert April 10

The Luther Concert Band, under the direction of Joan deAlbuquerque, will perform their homecoming concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at the CFL Main Hall. The concert is the culmination of the Concert Band's 2018 Midwest Tour. The program features a range of both traditional and contemporary band literature, including "Centennial Celebration Fanfare" by John Carnahan, "Lullaby for Noah" by Joseph Turrin, "Gumsuckers March" by Percy Grainger, "Dance Movements" by Philip Sparke, "Danzon No. 2" by Arturo Marquez, "Starsplitter" by Philip Rothman and "Two-Lane Blacktop" by James David.

Alumni Meyer to present Gjerset lecture April 11

Former Fulbright "Roving Scholar" Andy Meyer will present the annual Gjerset lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in the Olin Room 102. The lecture, titled "The Milk Route and Other Habits of Mind," is open to the public with no charge for admission.

In the 2015-16 school year, Meyer served as a Fulbright "Roving Scholar" in American Studies, in Norway. He traveled across the country to present workshops and lectures on topics such as American culture, history and literature. In total, he visited 61 schools covering all the Norwegian counties, including the high arctic territory of Svalbard. Meyer's lecture will be a synopsis of what he learned abroad, including impressions of, lessons from and curiosities about Norwegian education, life and values.

Brass ensembles take the stage April 11

Luther's brass ensembles will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert includes several stylistic forms, including jazz improvisation.

Luther's brass ensembles include the Trumpet Ensemble, Trombone Choir, Tuba Euphonium Ensemble and the Horn Ensemble. These ensembles are directed by Luther faculty Rebecca Boehm Shaffer, John Cord and Michael Smith.

Emeriti Colloquium April 12

The Luther Emeriti Colloquium meets at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in the Mott Room of the Union for a presentation by Luther College Professor and Library Archivist Emeritus Duane Fenstermann titled "Huffman/Cameron Bibliographic Journey to the Frontier." The presentation is open to the public with no charge for admission.

'Buried Above Ground' screening April 12

The "Buried Above Ground" documentary screening and discussion is 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in Olin 102. The film features three powerful PTSD survivors' stories of trauma, survival and recovery. It is sponsored by Active Minds, Counseling Service, the Social Work Department and Helping Services for Youth and Families. This is open to the community with no charge for admission. Popcorn and snacks will be provided courtesy of Student Senate, Active Minds and Luther Student Nurses Association.

'Those Who Can Do Teach' open April 13-May 27

"Those Who Can Do Teach," a series of mixed-media works by Luther College recent alumni art educators, will be on display in the Preus Library April 13 through May 27. The artists involved include Micayla Irmiter, '14; Jenna Darsee, Jenny Bonnell and Katie Mathis, '15; Lars Johnson and Robin Schone Hengesteg, '16; and Maxwell Green, '17.

Peled to speak April 13

Miko Peled, son of a famous Israeli general and the author of two books, will speak at 7 p.m. Friday, April 13, in the CRH. After losing a niece to a Palestinian suicide bomber, Peled joined a group of bereaved families from both sides of the conflict and became a critic of Israeli politics and an activist for Palestinian human rights. His talk is sponsored by the CEPE and the Coalition for Civil Freedoms, and is free and open to the public. For information, contact <cepe>.

SAC Cinema presents 'Marshall'

Co-sponsored by the Diversity Center, SAC Cinema presents "Marshall: The story of Thurgood Marshall." The movie tells the story of the crusading lawyer who would become the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, as he battles through one of his career-defining cases. The showing is at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 13, in Valders Room 206. Doors open at 7 p.m. and admission is $5. Free popcorn while supplies last!

'Bring the Sing' April 14

With a goal of forging community connections through song, members of the community are invited to take part in Classical Minnesota Public Radio's "Bring the Sing" series which will come to Luther from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14, in the CFL. "Bring the Sing" is an open choral event for voices of all abilities junior high age and above.

The event is open to the public with no charge to attend, though registration is required. To participate, singers can register at tinyurl.com/bring-the-sing. Due to the audio and video recording of the event, participants will be required to sign and submit a media release form.

French Films Series

The prize-winning film "Games of Love and Chance (L'Esquive)" will be presented at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 15, in Preus Library's Hovde Lounge. The film depicts the life of teenagers from housing projects in Paris, their issues with each other and the larger French society. This semester, films in the series highlight interactions among people of different classes and ethnic groups. Presented in French and French slang with English subtitles, all are welcome to attend.

Student recitals

Sunday, April 15
Juniors John Mai and Katherine Stuelke will give a vocal at 4 p.m.

Student recitals are held in the Noble Recital Hall and are followed by a reception. Recitals and receptions are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Jazz Orchestra to perform Homecoming Concert April 17

The Luther College Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Juan Tony Guzmán, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.The concert is the culmination of the Jazz Orchestra's 2018 Midwest Tour and is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program features a variety of exciting jazz repertoire, including works by Duke Ellington, Oliver Nelson, Don Menza, Mike Tomaro, Pat Metheny and Brazilian masters.

Varsity Band and Wind and Percussion Ensemble Spring Concert

Luther College's Varsity Band and Wind and Percussion Ensemble will perform their spring concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

The Varsity Band, led by James Fritz, will perform "Fanfare and Flourishes for a Festive Occasion" by James Curnow, "Fandango" composed by Frank Perkins and arranged by Floyd Werle, "Blue and Green Music" by Samuel Hazo, Symphonic Dance No. 3 "Fiesta" by Clifton Williams and "National Emblem" by E. E. Bagley.

Joan deAlbuquerque will take the baton for the Wind and Percussion Ensemble portion of the concert. The program includes "Home Again" by David Gillingham, "English Dances" by Malcolm Arnold, "A Movement for Rosa" by Mark Camphouse and "Barnum and Bailey's Favorite" by Karl King.

Collegiate Chorale to perform Homecoming Concert April 19

The Luther College Collegiate Chorale will perform a homecoming concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The performance, part of the Collegiate Chorale's annual Midwest Tour, is open to the public with no charge for admission. A freewill offering will be collected during the concert.

The 2018 Collegiate Chorale tour program is titled "Prayers for Peace" and includes works by Kim André Arnesen, Moses Hogan, Craig Hella Johnson, Jake Runestad, Nancy Wertsch and more.

Cathedral Choir to perform Homecoming Concert April 24

Luther College's Cathedral Choir will perform a homecoming concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in the Center for Faith and Life on Luther's campus. The performance, part of Cathedral Choir's annual Midwest Tour, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

The 2018 Cathedral Choir tour program includes Ola Gjeillo's "The Ground," Jeffrey Ames's "Let Everything That Hath Breath" and Mozart's "Missa brevis in F" K. 192, accompanied by a string ensemble comprised of members from the Luther College Symphony Orchestra.

Ted Koppel to give Roslien lecture May 1

Longtime anchor of ABC News' Nightline, Ted Koppel, will give Luther College's 2018 Roslien Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in the CFL Main Hall. The lecture, "Science and Policy: Communication in the Twenty-First-Century World of Fake News," is open to the public with no charge for admission. A question and answer session will follow the lecture.
