Efforts for Hurricane Harvey

Current information and links for Hurricane Harvey recovery​ efforts ​and donations are posted on the ELCA Gulf Coast Synod website. College Ministries encourages donations for Harvey Relief be sent to Lutheran Disaster Response as 100 percent of gifts go directly to ​relief efforts. Luther's Student Congregation is planning a "Caf Fast" to help students raise funds for Harvey relief. Watch the Bulletin and Tuesday for details.

The Luther athletics department donated $500 and raised another $150 to send south for Hurricane Harvey Relief. Money raised was in honor of the Garcia-Prats family. Chris and James Garcia-Prats, Luther soccer coaches, are originally from Texas and still have a lot of family there. To contribute a gift to the cause, contact <julie>.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

New strategic plan

The Strategic Planning Committee has completed the first draft of the college's new strategic plan, identifying a set of goals and objectives to guide our work over the next five years. The draft is available here for review. All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend one of the following open forums to hear more about and discuss the results of the community's collective efforts. The forums are: Wednesday, Sept. 6, 4 p.m., Peace Dining Room; Thursday, Sept. 7, 9:40 a.m., Peace Dining Room.

Traffic congestion expected Sept. 9

Luther will host the All-American Cross Country meet on campus Saturday, Sept. 9. In addition, that day is the first home football game, dedication of Legacy Field and Community Day. As a result, there will be considerable traffic and parking congestion in the area of Regents Center starting around 6 a.m. Saturday and into the early afternoon. Busses delivering teams to the event are asked to park in the barn lot and the city pool lot so these lots will be restricted to bus parking only starting at 8 p.m. Friday. Students who usually park in the barn lot may park in any student or general parking area on the main campus through the weekend.

Fill the stands, be an extra

Fotolanthropy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to producing and distributing documentaries that celebrate hope, has selected Luther's Chris Norton to be the subject of their next feature documentary film. From 2:30-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, the community is invited to attend the filming of "7 Yards: The Chris Norton Story," at Carlson Stadium, where there will be a special appearance and motivational message by Chris. Fotolanthropy asks that attendees wear game-day attire and expect an afternoon of cheering with friends, direction from the film crew and a once-in-a-lifetime experience as the community comes together to reenact moments from the game that forever changed Chris Norton's life. Mental health workshop

"How to Help A Friend Workshop" is now offered through Luther College Counseling Service. It is an interactive one-hour workshop for students to learn more about how to recognize if friends are struggling with mental health and what to do to help. It is delivered by LCCS outreach assistants and is available for classes, organizations, res. hall groups and teams. Email <counseling> to schedule with proposed dates and times and number of attendees.

Mental Health First Aid training

LCCS will hold a Mental Health First Aid training from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13. The eight-hour training is free, including manuals, and is open to staff and faculty. Those interested in completing this training can contact Stu Johnston in the Counseling Service at <johnstst>. Space is limited.

Transition Streets group

Interested in saving money and resources and getting to know your colleagues better? Join the Luther College edition of Transition Streets, a curriculum designed to build community and encourage actions to conserve energy and water, reduce waste and save money. Eight sessions are held every other Tuesday, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., starting Sept. 12. The group will meet in Nansen. Sign up today. This event is sponsored by the Center for Sustainable Communities. Speech and Debate Center opens Sept. 11

Need help on presentations? Want to practice a presentation before class? The Speech and Debate Center is here to help. The SDC opens Monday, Sept. 11, and is open Sundays through Thursdays from 6-10 p.m. all semester. Students may drop in or make an appointment via the link for the SDC on the KATIE main page. College night Sept. 11

Northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota high school students and their parents will have an opportunity to talk with representatives of nearly 60 higher education institutions Monday, Sept. 11, at Luther College. College Night will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. in Luther's Sports and Recreation Center at the college's Regents Center, located on the lower campus. The college invites all students and families interested in information about post-high school education options to attend.

Garbage reminder

As a reminder to all faculty, staff and community members, Luther College trash dumpsters, and those of the contractors, are only for the disposal of college-generated waste. Use of them for personal waste generated off-campus is prohibited. The recycling bins for cardboard, plastics, metal and paper are open for use by all.

Reason CMS training

This fall, web content is offering two different Reason classes. Reason 101 is for people who have never received Reason training or feel like they need a refresher after summer. Reason 201 is for those who have mastered the basics of Reason but would like a reminder about specific guidelines and learn about new features. Sessions run through Sept. 14. Employee wellness fall class registration

Registration is open for the first fall six-week session of employee wellness yoga, pilates and tai chi classes. Details and the registration form for each are available on the recreational services website. The cost is $24 for each six-week session and is open to current employees and spouses. Nobel Peace Prize Forum

Act now to reserve a place at the Nobel Peace Price Forum "Dialogue in Divided Societies" Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16, at Augsburg College. The 2017 NPPF honors 2015 Nobel Peace Prize recipients-the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet. The college will cover student registration, transportation and lodging. An art exhibit featuring works made by 15 Luther College art alumni will be on display Sept. 6-Oct. 13 in the Preus Library on the Luther campus. The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Is there a correct way to commemorate the past? Should Confederate statues stay or go? Reunion film and peace building

Focusing on the conflict in Kosovo and the interactions between Albanians and Serbs following the NATO bombing in 1999, Nobel Peace Prize nominee Steinar Bryn from the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Norway will show his film "Reunion" and host a discussion on peacemaking at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the Center for Faith and Life, Recital Hall. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

The dance program at Luther College focuses on learning about the body and developing movement practices to prepare students for careers in their chosen fields. Abigail Grinager '19, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was selected to research new perspectives on dance within interdisciplinary endeavors. She is working with Jane Hawley on her project, "Thinking Through the Body: New Perspectives on Dance for Interdisciplinary Endeavors."

Biosafety level 1 bacteria are often used for research because they are generally harmless to humans. Alexander Schaeffer '19, of New Prague, Minnesota, is researching outer membrane protein expression in biosafety level 1 bacteria as part of his summer research at the college. Schaeffer is working with Dana Talsness on the ongoing project "Examining Outer Membrane Protein Expression in Biosafety Level 1 Bacteria."

Monarch butterfly populations increase dramatically over the course of several generations each summer in Iowa, then early each fall the adults travel about 2,000 miles south to Mexico to spend the winter. This unique migratory phenomenon is threatened due to a dramatic decline in the monarch populations. Elizabeth Glennon '18, of Saint Louis Park, Minnesota, is studying butterfly diversity in prairies and specifically the use of milkweeds by monarch butterflies as part of her summer research. Glennon is working with Kirk Larsen, Anna Li Holey, '18, and local elementary school teacher Laurie Adrian, '16.

The landscape surrounding Decorah is home to many springs and streams, making it a prime destination for recreation. Unfortunately, these waters are also home to high levels of bacteria such as E. coli, particularly after summer rains. Tiwonge Chirwa '19, of Lilongwe, Malawi, was selected to research antibacterial resistance of bacteria inhabiting water sources in and around Decorah. Chirwa worked with Eric Baack on her project.
