Move-out day parking restrictions

To help facilitate closing of the residence halls we will be restricting parking on High Street from Koren to Center Street starting 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, until 9 p.m. Thursday, May 13. The faculty/staff parking along this section will be converted to a loading zone only during this time period to allow better access to those moving out of Brandt. In addition, the small lot south of Ylvisaker and east of the CFL will also be restricted to those vehicles being actively loaded for moving out of the residence hall during this same time period. We greatly appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Being Community updates

Johnson & Johnson vaccine clinic May 6
Luther students, staff and faculty who have not received a COVID-19 vaccine are encouraged to register for the college's Johnson & Johnson vaccine clinic noon–6 p.m. Thursday, May 6. The registration portal will remain open until 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 6, unless all of the available slots are taken before that time. Registration slots are available on a first-come-first-served basis. For more information and instructions on how to register, view the full update.

Call for proposals: Text and Issues Lecture Series

The Paideia Steering Committee invites proposals for the 2021-22 Text and Issues Lecture Series on the theme "Decolonizing Paideia? Revising the Products and Processes of Education." How might our disciplines, our curriculum, and our pedagogies (education, or in the Greek sense, paideia) be considered colonial, and in what ways can and should they change? View the Text and Issues Proposal Form to see the full description and submit a proposal. Proposals are due Friday, May 15.

Library Books are due May 7

May 7 is the due date for books checked out from the Main Stacks by faculty and staff on, or before, Sunday, May 2. Books checked out by faculty and staff may be renewed online or by emailing Preus Library <library>. The new due date is Dec. 10, the last day of classes for the fall semester. Books that have already been renewed three times will not be renewed again; rather you will need to bring these books in physically to the circulation desk to have them checked in and then out again to "re-start the clock." VIA Mentoring Program accepting applications and nominations for 2021-2022

Vocation-Inspired Alumni Mentoring—or VIA Mentoring—is a program that connects Luther students and alumni one-on-one in conversations about ways to learn actively, live purposefully, and lead courageously at Luther College and beyond. Do you know a student that could benefit from connecting with an an alumni mentor? Do you know a student that could flourish with a bit more opportunity for reflection and connection? Fiscal year end approaching

The end of the fiscal year is approaching. Remember that all supplies, materials, etc., must be received by Monday, May 31, to be expensed to a fiscal year 2020-21 budget. Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 11, to be included in FY 2020-21 budget. No faxed copies. Items for deposit must be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 4. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.

Take and bake Mother's Day brunch

Bring Mother's Day brunch home to Mom this year. Luther Catering is offering chef prepared items to create your own mimosa or bloody mary bar, amazing take and bake food and dessert. Check out the full menu at tickets.luther.edu/online. Orders must be placed by noon Thursday, May 6. Orders can be picked up in front of Dahl Centennial Union on Saturday, May 8 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

Preus Library used magazines

We are spring cleaning some of the shelves in Preus Library. Do you have a need for used magazines or journals? Art project? Vision board? Stuffing boxes for moving? Stop into the main lobby of the library and take some old magazines that have been pulled from the shelves. Any issues not taken will be recycled after Friday, May 7. Want to be a Certified Mental Health First Aider? 

Limited openings available for employees to participate in Adult Mental Health First Aid 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, May 14, (30 min lunch on your own) in Olin 102, masks required and physically distanced. MHFA teaches how to help someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Training is free and you receive a three year certification. Register here. Paideia all-college summer reading books still available

Copies of the 2021 summer read, "The Vanishing Half," are available to faculty and staff without cost at the Luther Book Shop, sponsored by the Paideia Program. This page-turner of a novel by Brit Bennett puts systemic racism under a sharp lens through the story of a Black mother and twin daughters, one of whom decides to pass as white. It was nominated for the National Book Award and named by The New York Times as one of the top 10 books of 2020. Pick up yours today!

Most compost collection ends May 9

Compost collection will close for the summer on May 9 in most academic and residence halls. Compost collection will remain open in the Union and in Miller Hall.

Jazz on the CFL steps May 6

Join the Luther College Jazz Band for an open rehearsal on the CFL steps 4:45-5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6. The group will perform a "best of 2020-21" program including the music of Denzil Best, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Billy Strayhorn, and Chick Corea. Two brand new works will also be featured: Ayn Inserto's "Notorious R.B.G." and Adam Meckler's arrangement of Max Roach's "Freedom Day," one of the earliest and most trenchant examples in jazz of protest music against racial injustice and violence.

Retirement

Amy Wrightsman, who has worked at Luther for more than 19 years has announced her retirement effective June 4, 2021. We congratulate Amy and thank her for her dedicated service to the college.

Position openings

Admissions Events Coordinator (1.0 FTE): The admissions events coordinator assists the director of admissions operations in designing, implementing, and evaluating in-person and virtual admissions recruitment events throughout the academic year and summer. Bachelor's degree and at least one year experience in a related field required. Position is available to internal applicants only.

Director of Stewardship and Special Events: The Luther Development Office is seeking internal candidates for a full-time Director of Stewardship and Special Events. A bachelor's degree is required, along with strong oral and written communication skills and proven proficiency in proofing/editing. Candidates should have three years' experience in special event management/planning, communications, or a related field. Prior work in customer relations and/or volunteer management is important.

Nursing Lab and Simulation Assistant/Staff Instructor (0.75 FTE: full time September–May): Under the direction of the Nursing Department, the assistant will support teaching of clinical judgement across the curriculum utilizing evidence-based practice. We seek a nurse who is well versed in the fundamentals of the discipline and is interested in inclusive and innovative pedagogy, including simulation. Bachelor's degree in nursing and three years of recent medical-surgical and/or acute care experience is required. Also required is eligibility for RN licensure in Minnesota and Iowa. Experience teaching in a baccalaureate program is preferred. Primary responsibilities will be on the main Luther College campus, but may require some travel to Rochester, Minn.

Stewardship and Events Coordinator (1.0 FTE): Position in the Development Office to provide administrative and project management support for programming and events related to donor stewardship, fundraising campaigns, and other aspects of development. Responsibilities will include: manage the Legacy Trust endowed scholarship stewardship programming; assist with donor stewardship communication to members of giving societies, Norse Athletic Association programming, and campaign appeals. Associates degree or equivalent experience and two years related professional work experience required.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

The Luther College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa has 37 new members including 36 students and one alumna. On Sunday, April 25, the students and Nancy Jones '69 were inducted into the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States. Watch the induction ceremony. During the induction ceremony, alumna inductee Nancy Jones gave this year's Ruth A. Davis Memorial Lecture to the Zoom audience. 

Six students have each received a $1,000 Steven Mark Anderson Scholarship for the 2021-22 academic year. Recipients include Ethan Bellendier '23, Shelby Cassidy '22, Ana Garcia de Leon '23, Iris Ohlrogge '22, Gabriella Vargas '23 and Waleed Yual '22. The scholarship benefits first-generation and income-eligible Luther College students involved in the TRIO Achievement Program. Read more about the recipients here.

Luther College is the winner of the 2021 Iowa Collegiate Mathematics Competition, which was held remotely on March 20. The Luther team of John Kelly '21, Suman Chapai '23 and Minh Nguyen '23 had the highest score. The other Luther teams took a respectable third and fifth place among the 16 participating teams from various Iowa Colleges and Universities.

"As the Twig is Bent: A Memoir" by Wallace Grange, co-edited by Joseph Breitenstein and Richard Thiel, was awarded The Certificate of Excellence by The Illinois State Historical Society at their annual meeting in April.

Wanda Deifelt's book chapter on diaconia (the social service of church) was published in the "International Handbook on Ecumenical Diakonia," edited by Godwin Ampony et al. The chapter is co-athored with German Bishop Beate Hofmann and is titled "Towards a Comprehensive Concept of Diaconia: Care, Transformation, Empowerment, Advocacy and Conviviality."  

Andy Hageman published his article "A Scavenger's Saga" in issue 202 of Star Wars Insider magazine, the official Lucasfilm magazine.

Aaron Lurth has two images selected from his photo series "My Paper Tiger, Carl" to take part in the next international juried group exhibition "Contrasts" curated by LoosenArt in Rome, Italy. This series was the result of a student/faculty summer research grant between Madilyn Heinke '20 and Aaron, depicting Aaron's personal stories and struggles with anxiety and mental health issues.

As a student taking part in Luther's Rochester Semester program, Eric (Min San Thu) has been working to tell the stories of Rochester small businesses as a storytelling intern with the company Collider. The stories explain how these entrepreneurs got started and how they are staying resilient through the pandemic. Through his internship with Collider, Eric has gained valuable career experience, networked with entrepreneurs working in various fields across Rochester and Southern Minnesota and he has been inspired to start his own business one day.

Ideas and Creations

In the post, Chris Norton to Spark Hope for Graduating Class at Commencement 2021, student Alex Thompson '22 shares why Chris Norton '15 has been selected as this year's commencement speaker and how his story can be a reminder that adversity presents an opportunity for triumph.

• Self Evident: Asian America's Stories. "Self Evident" challenges the narratives of where we come from, where we belong, and where we're going—by telling Asian America's stories. With host Cathy Erway, the show presents reported narratives, personal stories, and community conversations that tackle today's tough questions about identity, cultural change, and nationhood.

• Asian Enough. From the Los Angeles Times, "Asian Enough" is a podcast about being Asian American—the joys, the complications and everything in between. In each episode, hosts Jen Yamato, Johana Bhuiyan, Tracy Brown and Suhauna Hussain of the Times invite special guests to share personal stories and unpack identity on their own terms. They explore the vast diaspora across cultures, backgrounds and generations, and try to expand the ways in which being Asian American is defined.
• Asian Americana. "Asian Americana" is a podcast about slices of distinctly Asian American culture and history. Asian Americana is also a term based on the idea that Asian Americans are a rich and inherent part of the American cultural and historical tapestry. We weren't just present; we've actively built and shaped this nation with endless stories and contributions.
