Being Community updates

Guidance for Thanksgiving Break
A message was sent to the Luther community on Friday, Nov. 6, providing guidance to parents and students on making decisions around travel over Thanksgiving Break. The full message can be read on the Being Community website. 

The Being Community website is the hub of information and inspiration for Luther's approach to the 2020-21 academic year. We invite community questions and feedback.

HR updates

Open enrollment
Open enrollment is the annual opportunity to enroll in, or make changes to, health and dental plan elections. You do not need to do anything if you plan to remain on the current health and/or dental plan election. You must complete a Flexible Benefit 2021 Enrollment Form if you plan to participate in the health and/or dependent care flex plan(s) for 2021 (Flex enrollments plans do not roll forward to the next year). All forms are located on the HR website. Completed forms are due to the Human Resources office, Main 25, by 5 p.m., Wed. Nov. 18, 2020. Please call Human Resources at 387-1415 if you have questions.

Face coverings clarification
Face coverings may be removed in a few limited instances: when alone in a private office, common workspace, meeting room, classroom, or laboratory; in all cases, the space must be fully enclosed and the door(s) must be closed. The Return to Campus Planning for Employees has been updated.

Wellness blood draws

Time is running out for getting your blood draws on campus for your wellness checkups. We have four remaining for the year so schedule your time today! Tuesday, Nov. 17, and Tuesday, Nov. 24. All Luther employees on our insurance plan are required to have a community blood draw, wellness physical and complete the CHRA before Dec. 31 to avoid the monthly increase in their insurance premiums. To schedule a blood draw, contact <wellness>.

Portrait/passport photo day Nov. 12

The next portrait and passport photo day is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12. Portraits are free, passport photos are $5 (cash/check only). Photos are taken in Union 213. No appointment necessary. If you have any questions, please email <photobureau>.

One Team Day: Supporting student athletes Nov. 19

Mark your calendars for Luther's first annual One Team Day, an all-day fundraising event in support of Luther's student athletes: 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2020. With $86,000+ available in dollar-for-dollar matches, your support of our student athletes and/or individual sport programs will be doubled throughout the day (while funds are available). Campus Social Media Group meeting Nov. 10

A Campus Social Media Group is being convened to provide support and direction for administrators of Luther College institutional social media accounts, as outlined in the Luther College Social Media Policy. The first group meeting will take place at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10. Administrators that the Marketing and Communications team are already aware of have received an email regarding this meeting. Staff and faculty who have not received an email and are managing a Luther office/department social media account should contact <catherine.dyer> to receive meeting details.

Peruse Luther's first Internship Showcase Nov. 6-20!

Faculty, staff, and students are warmly invited to learn (safely distanced) about what Luther students are experiencing beyond our campus. This inaugural year features posters from Rochester Semester and biology internships. The vision is to inspire participation from the broad range of internships that occur in Luther's diverse majors and programs. Visit posters in the Union, CFA, Preus Library, Olin, Sampson Hoffland, Valders, and CFL. Event is sponsored by the Center for Global Learning, the Career Center, and the biology department.

Spread some kindness

In honor of World Kindness Day, Nov. 13, the Wellness Program would like to challenge you to make kindness visible these next few weeks. Check out the bulletin board in the Union by the ATM to learn more about the value of kindness, get a kindness bingo card to turn back in for a prize, and some great ideas on how to do what matters...being kind.

Institutionalized Racism in Science (IRIS) book club, 2nd Book

IRIS, a student-led discussion group, focuses on institutionalized racism in STEM. By reading books that highlight BIPOC's experiences within STEM settings, students aim to educate themselves for future work. Everyone is welcome, including faculty, staff, and alumni. Sign up for the next book, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," and discuss via Zoom at 1 p.m. Dec. 6 and Dec. 20. Books provided by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement with recognition given to Shana Liu, Kalie Debelak, and Anneliese Barton for launching the group.

Lunch space for staff and faculty

The Nobel Conference room is open to faculty and staff 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. most days and can be used as a space to take a break from your work area for lunch. Cleaning supplies are available in the room and COVID-19 protocols should be practiced.

Chapel this week

Oct.-Nov. Chapel: One Great World House
Inspired by a Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. quote shared by President Ward in her spring 2020 convocation address, "One Great World House" is a chapel series that explores the interconnectedness of humanity and all creation. Sung morning prayer on Mondays will be rooted in 1 Corinthians 12:12-26, as well as liturgy by Marty Haugen '73. On Wednesdays, "Just Biology?" led by Prof. Eric Baack and past and current students of Bio 151 will explore questions at the intersection of science and spirituality. Friday chapel is formed by music, prayer, and reflections on scripture from different speakers exploring the themes of interconnectedness and interdependence. In the diverse body that is the world: "If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it" (1 Cor 12: 26.). All chapel services are online, with links available at luther.edu/events.

Here's My Story: 'Coping with the Pandemic' Virtual Panel Nov. 11

The pandemic has impacted us in large and small ways, and because we have been distancing, we may not know how other members of the Luther community have been affected. Hearing others' stories can be validating. Join Luther staff, faculty, and students at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, as they speak about how their health, life circumstances, and intersectional identities have been challenged by the pandemic. Sponsored by Counseling Services, Nena Amundson Lifetime Wellness Program, Luther Disability Alliance, Active Minds and Center for Ethics and Public Engagement.

Virtual student recital: David Gorman, voice, Nov. 14

David Gorman '21, in collaboration with Anne Wilson, will perform a senior voice recital at 12 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. The program includes works by Bolcom, Poulenc, Bach, Schubert, and Ireland. This event will be livestreamed. David is a student of Andrew Whitfield and Nicholas Shaneyfelt.

Virtual student recital: Hannah Fichtner, voice Nov. 14

Hannah Fichtner '21, mezzo-soprano, in collaboration with Anne Wilson, will perform a senior recital at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. The program includes works by Gabriel Fauré, Henri Duparc, Christoph Willibald Ritter von Gluck, Franz Schubert, and John Duke. This event will be livestreamed. Hannah is a student of Jonathon Struve.

Virtual Symphony Orchestra Concert Nov. 15

Please join the Symphony Orchestra for a livestream performance at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, with works by Elgar, percussion quartet by Daughtrey, Paul Dukas, Richard Strauss, and Claude Debussy. Featuring Rachel Brandwein on harp.

CEPE Faculty Research Lecture: 'Tragic Politics and the Just Society' Nov. 17

Grounded in broader reflection on Christianity and politics, Storm Bailey proposes that even though every society can be more just, no society can be perfectly just. Can recognizing this tragic fact be a basis for dialogue and mutual respect without being a shield for perpetuating injustice? Join us for this virtual presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17. Storm Bailey is the 2019-21 Faculty Research Fellow for the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement.
