New Board of Regents members

President Ward announced that Willie Davismckennie '84, Vanessa (Grima Baldacchino) Frazier '90, and Dr. Mark V. Larson '78 will join the Luther College Board of Regents. Davismckennie, Frazier, and Larson will participate in their first official Board of Regents meeting in October. Read the full announcement for more information.

HR update 

Faculty and staff are asked to call Human Resources if they are in quarantine for COVID-19 symptoms or awaiting test results, so that extra cleaning of offices and shared spaces may be organized. 

Health and Wellness coaching available

Luther Wellness staff are available for health and wellness coaching for employees and students. Wellness Coaching can help you get clearer on your goals, provide you with resources, and help problem solve around a variety of topics that are impacting your health and wellbeing. Request an appointment at luther.edu/wellness, and a member of the wellness team will schedule an appointment with you based on the requested topic.

Hispanic Heritage Month discussion forums Oct. 14 and 21

Luther students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate in two discussion forums to explore questions on Latinx identity and diversity in the United States and at Luther College. Civic Sustainability Initiative

In response to President Ward's call to action this summer, the Civic Sustainability Initiative offers Luther and the Decorah community a series of forums, designed to build connections, foster conversations, and inspire actions toward a more just world. From small-group discussion and book groups, to guest speakers and panelists, forums are virtual as needed, in person when possible. CliftonStrengths workshop for students Sept. 29

CliftonStrengths access codes went out to all first-year students last Friday. Please encourage students to take advantage of this self-awareness tool and to attend the customized and engaging workshop at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29 via Zoom, Passcode: Luther

Braver Angels 'With Malice Toward None' workshops for students

Luther College is a registered participant in this national initiative, which offers a strategy for harnessing the strong emotions that are likely to follow the election results. Please encourage students to join the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement to lay the groundwork now by getting involved in upcoming Braver Angels offerings. Students are invited to sign up to participate or observe a red/blue workshop or take part in a structured debate. Both serve to humanize those whose opinions differ from our own and focus on building capacity to work together on common challenges.

Changes in the Cafeteria

Both Coke machines have been converted to touchless dispensing. The Pepsi machine has been converted to down rods to press the cup against. Milk, water and soda machines will be self-serve. Milk machine handles will be sanitized between uses. 16 oz cold cups and white sip lids will be handed out. Coffee, hot water, hot cocoa and soy milk will be served in disposable cups. All food in the Caf will be packaged for carryout. This allows us the flexibility to speed up service at the lines and reduce density in the Caf. There will be very limited seating available (170 seats) for those wishing to eat their meal in the dining room. Additional spaces for eating carryout meals is being explored.

Zoom waiting room and passcode requirement

Starting Sept. 27, 2020, all Zoom meetings must have either a Passcode or Waiting Room enabled. For meetings that do not have either a Passcode or Waiting Room enabled, Zoom will enable a Waiting Room for you. For more information, visit Zoom's FAQ.

Hazardous waste pick-up

Do you have college-generated hazardous waste you need to dispose of? If you have materials that you would like to include in the annual pick-up, please send an email prior to Wednesday, Oct. 7, to <benzle02> and include the name of the substance, quantity, and current location.

Anthology 'de-isolation: Voices from a small town in the early days of Covid' now available

The CEPE is happy to announce publication of "de-isolation: Voices from a small town in the early days of Covid." The anthology contains contributions from members of the Decorah and Luther community, including Mayor Lorraine Borowski, President Jenifer K. Ward, Anne Edison-Albright, David Faldet, Rachel Faldet, David Kamm, Kristin Peterson, Diane Scholl, Sören Steding, Amy Weldon, Alexandra White, and Sarah Wilder. Copies are $10 from the Luther Book Shop and Dragonfly Books. Proceeds benefit the Decorah Community Food Pantry.

Join the fun with #LutherRocks

Paint a rock with your unique design, hide the rock within our campus boundaries, and win cool prizes from Oct. 1- Nov. 4. Paint and rocks are available for painting Monday, Sept. 21-Friday Sept. 25 from 12:30-3:30 in the Student Organization Suite (SOS - room 102) in the Union. Limit of 19 people at a time. Rocks can also be painted ahead of time and dropped off at the SOS for future hiding. Be on the lookout for more information to come! Students, faculty and staff are invited to participate. This event is brought to you by Luther Wellness, SAC, and the Luther Book Shop.

Real Appeal weight loss benefit

"Real Appeal" is a health benefit provided at no additional cost for eligible employees enrolled in the UMR health insurance plan. This benefit can help you meet your goals, manage existing health conditions, and reduce your risk of developing conditions. Luther employees and spouses have indicated a 4.84/5 satisfaction rate with the program and found it helpful as a resource during the pandemic! Chapel this week

Chapel without Walls, M-W-F, 10:30-10:50 a.m.
We can't gather like we normally do. This season, we will rethink the walls that provide a sense of belonging, comfort, and definition to sacred space. In content and form, chapel will explore sacred space and where its boundaries and barriers lie. Monday and Friday during September term, chapel will be held online; streaming links are available on Luther's online events calendar. Wednesdays, chapel will be held on Bentdahl Commons.

Our chapel series for this first fall term is, "One Great World House," which is inspired by the following quote from the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr: "We have inherited a large house, a great 'world house' in which we have to live together... a family separated in ideas, culture, and interest, who, because we can never again live
apart, must learn somehow to live with each other in peace." Our grounding scripture for this series is 1 Corinthians 12:12-26.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, "White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity" author Robert P. Jones delivers a virtual presentation examining the unholy relationship between American Christianity and white supremacy, calling for a reckoning. Hosted by Todd Green, with Q&A to follow moderated by Pastor Melissa Bills of the Decorah Area Faith Coalition, and students Alice Odame '22 and Sletsi Dlamini '21. Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture: 'Chamber Music at a Distance' Oct. 13

Kicking off the Building Community in a Changing Society series, the first Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture of the 2020-21 acaemic year, "Chamber Music at a Distance: How Musical Collaboration Transcends Traditional Spaces" will be presented at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13. Kathy Reed, along with her colleagues Heather Armstrong, Daniel Baldwin, Andi Beckendorf, Carol Hester, Zach Mayer '21, Gregory Peterson, and Andrew Whitfield, will discuss finding creative ways to maintain the heart of musical collaboration when musicians and audience members are unable to be in close proximity. 'Christmas at Luther 2020: For Everyone Born' Dec. 4

All are welcome to enjoy the online premiere of "Christmas at Luther 2020: For Everyone Born" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4. Newly formatted for this unique time in history, this magical performance will be available to view from the comfort of home, free of charge. Visit luther.edu/christmas2020 to register and receive a viewing link. To take the viewing experience a step further, when registering select the option to purchase a Christmas at Luther gift box! The boxes will be shipped directly to homes and will contain special treats including a Christmas at Luther 2020 ornament, candles to light at home during the traditional candle-lighting, a printed program and more. Watch the Tuesday and Bulletin for information about participating in the 2020 version of the Christmas at Luther candlelighting. A candlelight montage will be assembled with footage of current students, faculty, staff, and emeriti.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Gereon Kopf participated in the research assessment exercise 2020 of the University Grants Committee in Hong Kong S.A.R. and was invited to assess the Department of Buddhist Studies at Dongguk University (Seoul, R.O.K.) for the QS World University Rankings Academic Reputation Survey.

Jim Martin-Schramm participated in "Good Trouble for a Healthy Planet: A 2020 Faith-Based Organization Consultation on Climate Emergency" that took place via Zoom on Sept. 24. He was invited to offer remarks during a workshop on "Solutions that Work: Mitigation and Adaptation."

Congratulations to Guy Nave for receiving the Racial Equity & Interfaith Cooperation Award that is a part of the Interfaith Youth Core's (IFYC’s) We Are Each Other's Campaign. As part of this award, Nave will receive grant funding for course development, curriculum development support and networking opportunities through IFYC. Professor Nave will join a diverse group of faculty dedicated to developing curriculum at the intersection of racial equity and interfaith cooperation.

Mark Potvin and Norskkor choir were recently featured by several television news stations, including Iowa News Now, KCRG, and WQAD for the innovative idea to rehearse in the empty Decorah Municipal Pool.
