Being Community updates

Luther College will remain at Level 0 Blue in the fall if no COVID-19 Indicators are activated and 70% of the campus community (students, faculty, and staff) has voluntarily provided proof of vaccination for COVID-19. Presently, 65% percent of faculty, staff, and students that are scheduled to be on campus in the fall have voluntarily submitted proof of vaccination for COVID-19. Employees who voluntarily submit proof of vaccination for COVID-19 by the end of the day on August 1 will receive a stipend in appreciation of their efforts.

Keynote: 'What Inclusive Instructors Do' with Dr. Tracie Addy

Curious to know more about campus-wide conversations surrounding Inclusive Excellence? Join your colleagues for a presentation 3–4 p.m. Monday, July 26, by Dr. Tracie Addy, associate dean of teaching and learning at Lafayette College, as she discusses some of the whys and hows of inclusive teaching. While Dr. Addy's address will be geared towards the college classroom, we are all partners in student learning. Staff are welcome to join. Please register on the CELT website for the Zoom link.  

Request for additional Paideia lecture proposals

Additional proposals will be accepted for the 2021–22 Text and Issues Lecture Series on the theme "Decolonizing Paideia? Revising the Products and Processes of Education." How might our disciplines, our curriculum, and our pedagogies (education, or in the Greek sense, paideia) be considered colonial, and in what ways can and should they change? Read the full description and find the proposal form on the Paideia website. Final deadline is July 30.

The Book Shop is selling copies of "More Than a Cup of Coffee and Tea." The book, about Lutheran-Muslim relationships, includes a contribution by Luther professor Todd Green.

Assistant Director of Facilities: Position to provide leadership, work supervision, and direction to a large group of Facilities Staff. Duties will include recruitment and development of staff, inspection of campus facilities to ensure standards are met, align supplies and equipment to the college sustainability initiatives, and management of college rental properties. Bachelor's degree and a valid driver's license is required. Position requires 24-hour emergency on-call availability.

Coordinator of Music Marketing (1.0 FTE): The coordinator manages the general music marketing of the music department, including social media platforms, website content and images, print and digital advertising, photography needs, music recording and licensing, conference attendance, and more. The coordinator supports music ensemble tours and Dorian programs through digital promotions and program assistance.and plans and implements all details for the Dorian Choral Retreat. A four-year college degree and experience with Google Workspace, website management, social media platforms, and advertising is required.

Regional Admissions Counselor: Position will be responsible for recruitment of students from the greater Twin Cities (Minnesota) geographic area. This position will physically be located in the greater Twin Cities area, with the candidate working from a home office. The Admissions Counselor actively works to enroll prospective students at Luther College via in-person and virtual synchronous and asynchronous recruitment interactions. In addition to recruitment travel, the Regional Admissions Counselor must be willing to travel to Decorah once or twice a month to support group visit events, cover a rotating Saturday office shift, and participate in staff workshops and training. Bachelor's degree in any major is required. One year of prior full-time experience in sales, marketing, communication, counseling, or education is preferred, but not required. Prior undergraduate work experience in a private liberal arts college is preferred, but not required. Fluency in Spanish is desirable, but not required. Candidates must have a valid driver's license and a positive driving record that will enable them to be insured through the college.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Preus Library is announcing its involvement in the Open Educational Resource (OER) statewide grant program. Developed by Iowa Private Academic Libraries, the grant provides funds to faculty members to develop free educational resources and encourages faculty members to incorporate OERs into their courses. Luther faculty are invited to apply by Monday, Nov. 1 for grant funding for spring semester courses. Different award levels are available for various projects, including adopting or remixing OERs, creating support materials, redesigning a course around OERs and creating new OERs. Faculty can visit the IPAL website to apply or find more information.

Jeffrey Boeke and Thomas C. Johnson presented "Valuing a College's Geographical Place" on July 14, 2021 at the Vocation of a Lutheran Higher Education Conference. 

Emily Dirks '18, alumni guest lecturer in voice, and Nicholas Shaneyfelt have been awarded the H. George Anderson and Jutta F. Anderson Faculty Development award. Dirks utilized the award to participate in Opera in the Ozarks, a highly regarded eight-week summer opera training program in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Shaneyfelt received the Anderson award for his project researching art songs by composers of color.

Nancy Gates Madsen and Julee Tate (professor of Spanish, Berry College) presented "Mini-series, Mega-Learning: Spanish Language TV Shows in the Conversation Classroom" at the AATSP (American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese) Conference in Atlanta, Georgia on July 8, 2021. Their presentation arose from a multi-year collaboration to develop teaching materials to incorporate TV series and telenovelas into their conversation classes.
