ANNOUNCEMENTS

Being Community updates

Luther joins COVID-19 College Vaccine Challenge
Building on its efforts to get students, faculty and staff vaccinated against COVID-19, Luther College has joined the COVID-19 College Vaccine Challenge. Signing on to this initiative, led by the White House and the U.S. Department of Education, means that Luther is committed to taking three key actions: Engage every student, faculty and staff member; identify champions for vaccine efforts across campus and implement a plan to get as many campus community members vaccinated as possible; and provide vaccine access.

Employee vaccination stipends
A reminder to all staff and faculty that employees who voluntarily submit proof of vaccination by the end of the day on Thursday, July 1, will receive a $50 stipend. Employees may submit proof of vaccination (two shots of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, or one shot of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine) by uploading a copy of the record on Norse Hub or by bringing it to Human Resources.

The Being Community website is the hub of information and inspiration for Luther's approach to the 2020-21 academic year. We invite community questions and feedback.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

The Welcome Center in the Dahl Centennial Union will not be staffed during the month of July. On Friday, July 9, and Wednesday, July 14, ITS will be working to upgrade our Network Access Control System. There will be short periods of time during both of these days where users will be unable to connect to the LCWireless and LCSecure wireless networks. If you're already connected to LCWireless or LCSecure or using a wired connection, you should have uninterrupted network access.

You can work with one or more students and can choose whether to engage with your student(s) in person or virtually. CIES plans to host several in-person events for the entire group, including a welcome potluck and a pumpkin carving event. Please fill out the 2021-22 Friendship Family Interest Form to indicate your interest in the program. Email Clara Muggli-Toyloy <mugglicl> with questions.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Luther's Move Out Mindfully student-led initiative has kept more than 12 tons of waste out of the landfill. During move out week, 60 student workers and volunteers implemented various tactics in an effort to reuse and recycle, rather than waste. Since it began in 2014, the Move Out Mindfully initiative has reduced the waste sent to the landfill by over 50%. This year alone, more than 11,000 pounds of recyclable material was sent to Winneshiek County Recycling, 8,700 pounds of clothing and household items were taken to the Depot Outlet, 1,000 pounds of food was donated to the Decorah Community Food Pantry and 1,100 pounds of compost was sent to the college farm.

Todd Green has a chapter in the newly published book "More Than a Cup of Coffee and Tea: A Generation of Lutheran-Muslim Relations" (Pickwick Publications), edited by David D. Grafton. The chapter is titled "Reconsidering Christian Responses to Islamophobia."

And finally...

This Sunday, July 4, marks 245 years of celebrating the United States of America's independence. The first-ever recorded Fourth of July party was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 4, 1777 and the festivities included 13 firework rockets being set off in the town square, in honor of the 13 colonies. Fireworks have been a part of Independence Day celebrations ever since. Here are a few area fireworks displays happening this weekend:
