Coronavirus updates

CampusClear Health Monitoring Tool
Luther is rolling out the free app and web portal CampusClear for daily self-screening. We ask every member of our community to use this app or web portal daily. Download the free app from the Apple App Store or Google Play App Store or if you do not have a mobile device, log in via a computer or laptop on the CampusClear web portal. Read the CampusClear FAQs on the Being Community website.

Active Cases at Luther College
For the community at large, the number of active cases, among students and employees, will be reported through the Testing, Monitoring, and Isolation web page. This page will be updated weekly on Tuesdays at 2 p.m.

Additional Guidance on Face Coverings
Luther College requires face coverings to be worn on campus, in both indoor and outdoor spaces. As of Aug. 27, the City of Decorah also requires all persons to wear face coverings when inside a business building or public space in the city. Numerous studies have shown that a simple cloth mask — without valves, vents or filters — is best for controlling the spread of the coronavirus. Based upon updated guidance from the CDC, face masks with vents or filters are not permitted on campus.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS    

Wellness blood screenings

During 2020, employees and spouses covered by the Luther College Health Care Plan have additional wellness benefits and requirements. Sign up for the Tuesday, Sept. 15, blood screenings with Gunderson here on campus by contacting Wellness, <wellness>. All staff must complete a blood screening, a routine physical and health risk assessment form by Dec. 31, to avoid a $25 increase per month in your insurance. WMC is not conducting blood screenings on-site so contact Wellness about your options. Physicals are also a couple months out so don't hesitate to get yours scheduled!

Greater Good Mindful Well-being Group

Hoping to bring more meaning or well-being into your life and work? Wellness is leading three week-long groups engaging in science-based practices for a meaningful life using the Greater Good Toolkit from UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center. The first group begins on Sept. 9. For more information or to join visit the group webpage.

Preus Library September Term Hours

September Term hours for Preus Library are Monday-Friday: 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday: Noon-5 p.m. The library is now open with limited services to students, faculty, emeriti, and staff. In support of safety and social distancing, face coverings are required, the stacks will remain closed, and seating will not be available. Materials may be requested for check-out or browsing through the "Place Holds" feature of the online catalog or by contacting the Circulation Desk. Office for Financial Services window

The OFS Window is now open! Our updated hours are 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m. The dropbox is still available for deposit outside these hours. If you need to meet with someone, contact us at 563-387-1015 to set up an appointment. We request that you stop by the window before entering to help us minimize the number of visitors in our office at one time.

Mail Center hours

The Mail Center will extend its summer hours through the month of September. The Mail Center window will be open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and remain closed on Saturdays. We will continue to monitor the needs of the Luther student body and adjust our hours, in the subsequent months, as necessary. Contact Jeff Naatz <naatje01> if you have questions.

Document Center hours

Customer hours at the Document Center are temporarily changing to 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Wherever possible, we will deliver jobs around campus to maintain social distancing at the Document Center. Contact Jeff Naatz <naatje01> if you have questions.

Oneota Market is now open

Oneota Market is now open 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Friday! Due to COVID-19 restrictions we are unable to allow personal cups or containers to be brought in.  

CEPE book discussion

"White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity." As the nation faces a reckoning on racial justice, Robert P. Jones delivers a provocative examination of the unholy relationship between American Christianity and white supremacy, asserting that white Christians have long constructed and sustained a project of protecting white supremacy and opposing black equality. Join an upcoming book discussion (Sept. 22 and Oct. 6 at 4 p.m.) to prepare for Jones' virtual presentation to the community at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7. Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement (CEPE).

$1.7 million federal TRIO grant

Luther College has been awarded a 5-year federal grant for its TRIO Achievement Program. Luther is among several colleges and universities selected to receive grants through the U.S. Department of Education. The college will receive more than $330,000 during the first year of the grant, which begins Sept. 1, with the total 5-year amount projected at approximately $1.7 million. Every 5 years TRIO programs across the country compete nationally for continued funding.  

Susan (Maclay) Blackman estate leaves lasting impact

A major gift from the estate of Regent Emerita Susan (Maclay) Blackman '64 will support multiple funds at Luther. After her death in February 2020, an estate gift of more than $500,000 was donated to multiple funds at Luther including the Career Connections Fund, the Susan Maclay Blackman Fellowship for Study Abroad fund, the Main Building Project, the Luther Fund, the Luther College Regent's Promise Scholarship and the Vienna Residency Endowment.

Chapel this week

Chapel without Walls, M-W-F, 10:30-10:50 a.m.
We can't gather like we normally do. This season, we will rethink the walls that provide a sense of belonging, comfort, and definition to sacred space. In content and form, chapel will explore sacred space and where its boundaries and barriers lie. Monday and Friday during September term, chapel will be held online; streaming links are available on Luther's online events calendar. Wednesdays, chapel will be held on Bentdahl Commons.

Beethoven Celebration Concert Sept. 6

Music faculty are kicking off the fall 2020 Faculty Artist Series with a special virtual "Beethoven Celebration Concert" at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6. Everyone is invited to view the live streamed event; with the link available under the online calendar event listing. There is no charge for viewing. Position openings

Float Custodial Staff Member (1.0 FTE): Will assist in maintaining building appearance which consists of all areas including lobbies, entrances, classrooms, offices, hallways, breakrooms, auditoriums, conference rooms, staircases, study lounges, restrooms, shower rooms and kitchens. Regular work shift will be 5 a.m.-1 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Laundry Attendant (.83 FTE, 10-months per year): Responsible for the laundering of athletic practice and game uniforms as well as other materials as instructed. Work must be performed during the evening-early morning hours, but shift start time is negotiable. Some weekend hours will be required for special events/tournaments. No specific educational training or experience is necessary. Mostly on-the-job training.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

With her colleague, Marjorie Elizabeth Plummer, Victoria Christman co-edited the anthology "Cultural Shifts and Reformation Transformations in Reformation Europe: Essays in Honor of Susan C. Karant-Nunn," which was published this month by Brill. Victoria and Robert Christman each contributed chapters to the volume.

Andy Hageman published a peer-reviewed interview with Sofia Samatar in the latest issue of Studies in the Fantastic. The interview, "A museum, like a tomb, is a whole theatre of weird temporality: an interview with Sofia Samatar," explores racism and speculative fiction and more.

John Jefferson coauthored a paper titled, "Polarized human cholangiocytes release distinct populations of apical and basolateral small extracellular vesicles." that was published in "Molecular Biology of the Cell." This work was the result of a sabbatical collaboration at The Mayo Clinic. 

Beth Lynch was invited to contribute to an expert assessment for the Global Assessment of Abrupt Change in Fire Regimes project of the International Paleofire Network. The objective of this project is to document scientific opinion of changes in fire regimes and their effects on ecosystems, climate, and societies.

A collaboration between Loren Toussaint and scientists at Rovira and Virgili (Dr. Pilar Monteso-Curto a Luther College visiting professor), and the University of Rome has been published. The article is a "viewpoints" piece in the Journal of Global Health and is about the differences and similarities in COVID-19 response in Italy and Spain (and to a lesser extent USA). The article is open-access and freely available to everyone.

On behalf of the Decorah Area American Association of University Women, Jacqueline Wilkie, Carley Foster, and Mark Potvin produced video of lecture and song to mark the anniversary of the final signing of the 19th amendment.
