SASC name change

After a year-long review and restructuring of the Student Academic Support Center (SASC), the center now has a new name: the Center for Academic Enrichment (CAE). The CAE will continue the mission of SASC to help students develop confidence in their abilities and achieve their greatest academic potential, utilizing an asset-based model which places a strong emphasis on students' academic strengths and possibilities as opposed to their weaknesses. "In essence, 'academic enrichment' speaks to the idea of providing and enriching our students with meaningful and valuable opportunities to support in-classroom learning and to enhance the student experience through a robust co-curricular experience," said Lisa Scott, vice president of institutional equity and inclusion and student success.  

Being Community updates

Decision on Fall Quarter 1
President Ward confirmed plans to use in-person instruction and residential living on campus for Fall Quarter 1. A reminder that this plan is subject to change. If the Luther community needs to make a change in plans, you will be notified via email; please check your Luther email daily.

Campus Indicators and Alert Levels
The Luther College COVID Response Team (CRT) is meeting daily to review a list of COVID-19 indicators. In conjunction with President Ward, the CRT will decide what alert level is active for Luther College. When there are changes in alert level, all students, parents, faculty, and staff will be notified via email; and this web page and the website alert banner will change.

The Being Community website is the hub of information and inspiration for Luther's approach to the 2020-21 academic year. We invite community questions and feedback.

Library break hours

Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 26-27: Closed
Monday-Wednesday, Sept. 28-30: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Changes in the Cafeteria

Both Coke machines have been converted to touchless dispensing. The Pepsi machine has been converted to down rods to press the cup against. Milk, water and soda machines will be self-serve. Milk machine handles will be sanitized between uses. 16 oz cold cups and white sip lids will be handed out. Coffee, hot water, hot cocoa and soy milk will be served in disposable cups. All food in the Caf will be packaged for carryout. This allows us the flexibility to speed up service at the lines and reduce density in the Caf. There will be very limited seating available (170 seats) for those wishing to eat their meal in the dining room. Additional spaces for eating carryout meals is being explored.

Zoom waiting room and passcode requirement

Starting Sept. 27, 2020, all Zoom meetings must have either a Passcode or Waiting Room enabled. For meetings that do not have either a Passcode or Waiting Room enabled, Zoom will enable a Waiting Room for you. For more information, visit Zoom's FAQ.

Hazardous waste pick-up

Do you have college-generated hazardous waste you need to dispose of? If you have materials that you would like to include in the annual pick-up, please send an email prior to Wednesday, Oct. 7, to <benzle02> and include the name of the substance, quantity, and current location.

Anthology 'de-isolation: Voices from a small town in the early days of Covid' now available

The CEPE is happy to announce publication of "de-isolation: Voices from a small town in the early days of Covid." The anthology contains contributions from members of the Decorah and Luther community, including Mayor Lorraine Borowski, President Jenifer K. Ward, Anne Edison-Albright, David Faldet, Rachel Faldet, David Kamm, Kristin Peterson, Diane Scholl, Sören Steding, Amy Weldon, Alexandra White, and Sarah Wilder. Copies are $10 from the Luther Book Shop and Dragonfly Books. Proceeds benefit the Decorah Community Food Pantry.

Join the fun with #LutherRocks

Paint a rock with your unique design, hide the rock within our campus boundaries, and win cool prizes from Oct. 1- Nov. 4. Paint and rocks are available for painting Monday, Sept. 21-Friday Sept. 25 from 12:30-3:30 in the Student Organization Suite (SOS - room 102) in the Union. Limit of 19 people at a time. Rocks can also be painted ahead of time and dropped off at the SOS for future hiding. Be on the lookout for more information to come! Students, faculty and staff are invited to participate. This event is brought to you by Luther Wellness, SAC, and the Luther Book Shop.

Flu Shots for Employees

We've expanded the time and there are still a few slots open for flu shots on Sept. 29 on campus in front of the Union between 12:30-1 p.m. Over 100 employees will be receiving their shot that morning so we ask that you strictly adhere to the time slot given you to allow for social distancing. New this year, you won't have to pay and submit for reimbursement! If you are not on the Luther insurance, you will need to provide a copy of your insurance card so we can have that company directly billed. Email <wellness> with your UMR# and birthdate to register.

Real Appeal weight loss benefit

"Real Appeal" is a health benefit provided at no additional cost for eligible employees enrolled in the UMR health insurance plan. This benefit can help you meet your goals, manage existing health conditions, and reduce your risk of developing conditions. Luther employees and spouses have indicated a 4.84/5 satisfaction rate with the program and found it helpful as a resource during the pandemic! Additional information may be found on the Wellness website.

Library study space

Preus Library now offers physically-distanced study tables by appointment during the hours the library is open. For more information and to make an appointment, visit our study table reservation site.

Looking for volunteer drivers

Recreational Services has four trips of students going down the Upper Iowa in kayaks the weekend of Sept. 26-27 and we need drivers that can help get the students to the starting point in a physically-distanced manner. Groups are at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. each day. Drivers must be able to drive 12 passenger vans or be certified before by Security. If you can help please contact <jaegervi>; we (and the students!) would greatly appreciate it.

No winter clothes donations this year

The CIES office will not be accepting donations of used winter gear this year, due to COVID-19 concerns.

Lunch-n-Lemonade Sept. 22

Join the Wellness staff out in Bentdahl Commons or via Zoom at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 22, for a time of sharing on how you have made "lemonade" in this period of lemons. Bring your mask and lunch! We are excited to see you in person or through the screen. Please register so we know how much lemonade to purchase!

Luther and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church partner together

Luther College and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church are partnering together to better serve the faith needs of students and community members. The two entities are now considered Collaborative Learning sites for Wartburg Seminary Students, including Vicar Kathryn Thompson, who will work with both entities for the next four years. At Luther, she will lead Monday chapel, work with the Multifaith House, and help connect interested students with area congregations. At Good Shepherd, she will continue her responsibilities to the Children, Youth and Family Ministry.

Chapel this week

Chapel without Walls, M-W-F, 10:30-10:50 a.m.
We can't gather like we normally do. This season, we will rethink the walls that provide a sense of belonging, comfort, and definition to sacred space. In content and form, chapel will explore sacred space and where its boundaries and barriers lie. Monday and Friday during September term, chapel will be held online; streaming links are available on Luther's online events calendar. Wednesdays, chapel will be held on Bentdahl Commons.

'Ask an Alum'
Our September Friday chapel series begins with messages from Black alumni, organized through a collaboration with the Black Alumni Association. On days when we hear from alumni, we will host an "Ask an Alum" Zoom gathering from 4-4:30 p.m. that afternoon, in order to enable students to further connect with the chapel speakers. These gatherings provide an opportunity to make connections, network and learn from people who began their journeys at Luther, and are making an impact across the world. The "Ask an Alum" virtual event links are available via the corresponding Fridays' Weekday Chapel posts on luther.edu/events.

The American Rivers Conference intends to move forward with fall competition in women's and men's cross country, women's golf, and women's tennis. See the Complete Sports Schedule for all fall sporting events, both home and away.

Food justice film screenings Sept. 24-27

Luther College will screen four films premiering at the Food Justice Film Festival 2020, Sept 24-27. One film will be shown each evening followed by a panel discussion with film directors and food justice advocates. Screenings begin each evening at 7 pm in Valders 206. Observing physical-distancing, maximum seating capacity will be 43 people. Viewers should arrive by 6:45 p.m. to assure appropriate seating. When maximum seating is exceeded, we will use Olin 102 as an additional screening location. Film descriptions, trailers, and information about panel speakers can be accessed on the film festival website. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, screenings will be restricted to Luther College students, faculty, and staff. 

Robert P. Jones author presentation and Q&A Oct. 7

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, "White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity" author Robert P. Jones delivers a virtual presentation examining the unholy relationship between American Christianity and white supremacy, calling for a reckoning. Hosted by Todd Green, with Q&A to follow moderated by Pastor Melissa Bills of the Decorah Area Faith Coalition, and students Alice Odame '22 and Sletsi Dlamini '21. A Civic Sustainability Event, sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement (CEPE).

Save the Date: Farwell Distinguished Lecture Oct. 15

The Global Health Governance Board, the President's Office, Campus Programming, Center for Global Learning, and Center for Ethics and Public Engagement are pleased to announce this fall's Farwell Distinguished Lecture: Luther regent and renowned public health expert, Dr. Michael Osterholm '75. Dr. Osterholm will speak live via Zoom Webinar on Thursday, Oct. 15. Details to be announced soon.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

And finally...

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on Sept. 15 and ending on Oct. 15. It was enacted into law on Aug. 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of Sept. 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is Oct. 12, falls within this 30-day period.
