Being Community updates

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Fiscal year end approaching

Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 11, to be included in FY 2020-21 budget. No faxed copies. Items for deposit must be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 4. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.

2021 Virtual Dorian Summer Music Camp is open for enrollments!

This summer, we are thrilled to bring the music, memories, and friendships of Dorian Summer Music Camps to music students, regardless of where they are located! From June 15-17, our 2021 Virtual Dorian Summer Music Camp will offer a few hours of exciting and interactive programming applicable to any musician entering grades 7-12 and 2021 high school graduates. Along with the virtual programming, a Dorian camp box will also be sent to students' homes, with $50 of Dorian contents, including some limited edition items. Get outside summer wellness challenge

Email Wellness <wellness> to join the summer employee wellness challenge or learn more. The challenge is to be active outside each week for 150 minutes for 10 weeks, starting June 6. Plus, bonus wellness activities to take breaks from technology, connect to others, and strength train lead to more prize drawings! 

Luther Works! launch

Thank you to the 80+ student work supervisors who were able to attend the launch meeting and ask excellent questions last Thursday, May 20. If you were not able to attend that event, we are hosting one again at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, June 3. For details, check out the event in the Luther Works Google Calendar and keep an eye out for more details in an email from stuwork. Whether you attend these events or not, we would love to hear your input through the Luther Works Supervisor Survey, and have you attend a listening session with us (more info in the survey).

All dining services locations are closed on Monday, May 31, for Memorial Day. All locations will also be closed Sunday, July 4.

The Book Shop will be closed May 24–28 for inventory. Please consider future purchases and make before this time.

Tax exempt at Dollar Tree

When purchasing at the Dollar Tree, if you do not want to fill out the tax exempt form at check out, you can have the sales associate scan the college's exempt barcode. The barcode form is on the Financial Services website and is called "Dollar Tree Tax Exempt Barcode."

Autographed Copies of Chris Norton's books
The Book Shop has signed copies of The Power of Faith and The Seven Longest Yards by Luther's 2021 Commencement speaker, Chris Norton. A 2015 alum, Norton is also a motivational speaker and founder of the SCI CAN Foundation.

Sympathy

To the family and friends of Curt Reiso '54, who passed away Aug. 20, 2020, at age 88. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2021, in the CFL Main Hall. A reception will follow in Bentdahl Commons. Curt's career as an administrator from 1954 to 1994 included work in admissions, alumni relations, development and music, under presidents J.W. Ylvisaker, Elwin D. Farwell and H. George Anderson. Curt most recently served as coordinator of music activities, planning 86 tours for the Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, and Nordic Choir. He became known for his loyalty to the students and faculty, and for his tenacity and creativity in handling the inevitable unforeseen complications that would sometimes arise. The Curtis Reiso Atrium in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music is named in his honor.

Position openings

Accounting Clerk-Cash Transactions (1.0 FTE): Position responsible for generating cash disbursements and banking transactions on a daily basis and reconciling multiple bank accounts. Position will also assist with the college's commercial card program and managing the college's unclaimed property program. Responsibilities will include e-commerce paypal-campsite stripe platforms and employee registry. Associate's degree and ability to work with minimal supervision is required. Two years' banking related experience and understanding of the general ledger system is desired.

Custodial Support Coordinator (1.0 FTE): Position responsible for providing excellent customer service while evaluating and assigning float staff to areas of campus and supervising custodial staff. Coordinator will work with Assistant Director of Facilities to manage custodial operations and act as back-up to Custodial Student Work Coordinator. High School diploma, computer skills and valid driver's license is required. Five years' supervisor experience and an interest in environmental sustainability preferred.

Information Security Analyst and Systems Administrator (1.0 FTE): Position will lead the work of identifying IT related security risks, and the prioritization and coordination of risk resolution (50%); and support operating systems and network infrastructure needs, services, backups, and maintenance procedures (50%). Bachelor's or associate's degree is required with preference for IT related-field along with experience installing and maintaining Windows and Linux server operating systems. Desirable experience includes working knowledge of Active Directory, Azure ADFS, Windows Group Policy, and enterprise backup systems. Additional preference is given to those with Information Security knowledge and experience.

Manager of Student Accounts (1.0 FTE): Position to oversee the operations of student financial services including but not limited to billing, receivables, and cashiering function of the college. The manager will maintain the integrity and timeliness of student account charges, credits, adjustments, refunds, and online payment systems. Bachelor's degree in accounting or a business-related field, at least two years' relevant experience in collections and/or customer service, and strong Excel skills are required. Experience in higher education and financial aid guidelines is preferred.

Towers Area Coordinator, Miller/Dieseth Halls (10 month per year, .83 FTE, live-in position): This position is responsible for coordinating the student learning and personal development programs in a coeducational residence hall housing approximately 730 students. Master's degree in college student personnel, counseling, or higher education preferred; bachelor's degree required.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

The digital issue of spring 2021 "Agora" is now available. This issue features faculty essays by T. Green, S. Schmidt, and O. Selçuk, A. Kueny, P. Iversen, and L. Zook, N. Whitsitt, B. Joyce, and a reflection by Nancy Jones '69. There are chapel talks by G. Nave, T. Green, G. Kopf, N. Barry, S. Dlamini '22 and S. Valdivieso Santillán '23 in this issue as well. Hard copies are limited; each department will have several to share, but if you need one, please email the Agora staff <agora>.

A new album released by the Luther College Nordic Choir is now available for streaming. "Coming Home to the Light" features some of the best performances by the premier collegiate choral ensemble, ranging from 2017-21, all conducted by Andrew Last. The album is only available in a digital format. Those who are interested can find "Coming Home to the Light" on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music. Read more about how Nordic Choir students helped in the creation of this album. 

Todd Green contributed to a series sponsored by the Berkley Forum at Georgetown University on the theme of "Healing Muslim-Christian Relations in the United States." His article is titled "Confronting Christian Islamophobia."

House sitter available: I am a 2017 Luther graduate and just accepted a teaching position at Decorah Middle School for the upcoming school year. I am in the process of looking for a place to live.
