Being Community updates

Please note, Monday, Aug. 1, is the last days for employees to receive a stipend for voluntarily submitting proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Aquatic Center closed for maintenance

The Luther College Aquatic Center will be closed through Monday, Aug. 9, for annual maintenance. Please contact Aaron Zander <aaron.zander> with questions.

Internet outage July 29

At approximately 5 p.m. Thursday, July 29, Luther's Internet connection will experience a short outage to allow our internet service provider to perform maintenance. The duration of the outage is expected to be 15 minutes or less.

Luther College Writers Festival registration now open

Registration is now open for the sixth biennial Luther College Writers Festival, taking place Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25. Celebrating the rich diversity of contemporary imaginative writers, participants will enjoy in-person keynote addresses, craft sessions, featured readings, and panels all led by well-known writers.

Keynote: 'What Inclusive Instructors Do' with Dr. Tracie Addy

Curious to know more about campus-wide conversations surrounding Inclusive Excellence? Join your colleagues for a presentation 3–4 p.m. Monday, July 26, by Dr. Tracie Addy, associate dean of teaching and learning at Lafayette College, as she discusses some of the whys and hows of inclusive teaching. While Dr. Addy's address will be geared towards the college classroom, we are all partners in student learning. Staff are welcome to join. Please register on the CELT website for the Zoom link.

Sympathy

To the friends and family of Florence Schubert. Dr. Schubert was the first department head when Luther's nursing program was developed. The Celebration of Life Service will be held in-person and streamed on the internet at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, at the Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester, Minn.

Position openings

Assistant Director of Facilities: Position to provide leadership, work supervision, and direction to a large group of Facilities staff. Duties will include recruitment and development of staff, inspection of campus facilities to ensure standards are met, align supplies and equipment to the college sustainability initiatives, and management of college rental properties. Bachelor's degree and a valid driver's license is required. Position requires 24-hour emergency on-call availability.

Coordinator of Music Marketing (1.0 FTE): The coordinator manages the general music marketing of the music department, including social media platforms, website content and images, print and digital advertising, photography needs, music recording and licensing, conference attendance, and more. The coordinator supports music ensemble tours and Dorian programs through digital promotions and program assistance and plans and implements all details for the Dorian Choral Retreat. A four-year college degree and experience with Google Workspace, website management, social media platforms, and advertising is required.

Custodial Staff Member (0.75 FTE): Position will maintain building appearance and cleanliness in all areas, including lobbies, entrances, classrooms, offices, hallways, kitchens, conference rooms, staircases, study lounges, restrooms, and shower rooms. Hours will typically be 7 a.m.–1 p.m. Monday–Friday. High School Diploma and/or equivalent preferred but not required. 

Regional Admissions Counselor: Position will be responsible for recruitment of students from the greater Twin Cities (Minnesota) geographic area. This position will physically be located in the greater Twin Cities area, with the candidate working from a home office. The Admissions Counselor actively works to enroll prospective students at Luther College via in-person and virtual synchronous and asynchronous recruitment interactions. In addition to recruitment travel, the Regional Admissions Counselor must be willing to travel to Decorah once or twice a month to support group visit events, cover a rotating Saturday office shift, and participate in staff workshops and training. Bachelor's degree in any major is required. One year of prior full-time experience in sales, marketing, communication, counseling, or education is preferred, but not required. Prior undergraduate work experience in a private liberal arts college is preferred, but not required. Fluency in Spanish is desirable, but not required. Candidates must have a valid driver's license and a positive driving record that will enable them to be insured through the college.

Weekend Custodian (0.75 FTE): Position has the opportunity to interact with students, staff, faculty, and the community on a daily basis. Custodian will support student life as well as events on campus. This role will have access to areas across campus and support the cleaning and sanitation in residence halls as well as academic spaces. Typical work schedule is noon–6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 6 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required. Valid driver's license required.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Nora Nyi Myint '22 and Salomé Valdivieso-Santillán '23 have been awarded the Kuh Family "Positively Luther" Award and the Krahn Family Student Life Service Award respectively for their contributions to the Luther community and participation in activities that embrace the spirit and mission of Luther College. 

Dawn Reding and colleagues published the article "Mitochondrial Genomes of the United States Distribution of Gray Fox Reveal a Major Phylogeographic Break at the Great Plains Suture Zone" in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution.

Loren Toussaint was interviewed for a story in Fatherly magazine on forgiveness in couples. Other contributors include Fred Luskin from Stanford University and Robert Enright from the University of Wisconsin.
