Midyear update today, convocation Thursday
Faculty and staff are invited to attend both President Carlson's midyear update at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in Valders 206, and spring semester opening convocation at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in the CFL.
During the midyear update, President Carlson will update the campus community on the strategic plan, the upcoming re-accreditation review by the Higher Learning Commission and key priorities for the semester ahead.
Tiffany Patterson, Vanderbilt University associate professor of African American and diaspora studies, and history, and director of undergraduate studies in African and African diaspora studies, will give the Luther College spring convocation address, "Black Students and the Creation of Black Studies."
At convocation, the college will present the Spirit of Luther award to Bob Naslund, a much-loved member of the Luther community. Bob coached in the Luther Athletics department for more than 20 years, serving as head coach for both track and field, and football.
If possible, offices should close for both events so all can attend.

Dorian Orchestra Festival
Luther will host the annual Dorian Orchestra Festival Sunday and Monday, Feb. 10-11, with 185 string students and 30 teachers on campus to participate in the festival. Expect slightly heavier cafeteria lines Sunday at dinner and Monday at lunch. Thank you for welcoming these potential future Norse to campus!

Scholar Recognition Day events Feb. 9 and 23
Luther College Admissions will host Scholar Recognition Day events Saturdays, Feb. 9 and 23, in order to recognize the highest achieving admitted students at Luther and allow those students the chance to interact with faculty and current students.
Students who have been awarded the Founder's, President's or Dean's Scholarship, or the Martin Luther Award are invited to attend the event.

Hot Reads for Cold Nights

Faculty Artist Series: Luther College Piano Quartet
Luther College Piano Quartet presents a program of chamber music at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in Luther's Noble Recital Hall in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. Luther College Piano Quartet, now in its 11th year, is comprised of four Luther music faculty; Miko Kominami, piano; Igor Kalnin, violin; Spencer Martin, viola; and Philip Borter, cello.
Symphony Orchestra to perform Vienna homecoming concert
This past Saturday night, the Luther College Symphony Orchestra performed in the Golden Hall at Vienna's famed Musikverein concert hall. Come hear why the audience of 1,200 gave a sustained ovation. The Luther College Symphony Orchestra will perform their homecoming concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Dorian Orchestra Festival concert opportunities
All high school participants involved in the Luther College Dorian Orchestra Festival perform a concert at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, in Luther's Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. This event is open to the public with no charge for admission. Both the string and chamber orchestras feature high school students from the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. Students have a chance to participate in rehearsals, lessons, masterclasses and technique classes with Luther string faculty.
High school string players participating in Luther's Dorian Chamber Ensemble Intensive will present a recital at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, in Luther's Noble Recital Hall in Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Four chamber groups will perform in the recital, as well as students selected as soloists from their festival lessons. This event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Not Quite Free Lunch Feb. 12

Screening of 'Freedom Writers'
Hillary Swank plays Erin Gruwell, the real-life teacher at Long Beach's Wilson High who, amid racial and gang tension, finds a way to connect with her at-risk, "unteachable" students. Gruwell helps them forego teenage pregnancy, drugs and violence, and re-chart their futures through writing. Watch the movie to prepare for Gruwell's keynote and visit to campus Feb. 20. The screening is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in Valders 206, and is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Emeriti colloquium Feb. 14
Having served as a college pastor at Luther College since 1991, Pastor Mike Blair will draw on his experience to present a lecture on the topic of "The Evolution of Young Adult Spirituality" at the Emeriti Colloquium at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in the Mott Room. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.
CSS: Westerlies Brass Quartet Feb. 15
Praised as a "rare combination of approachable and unusual," by the NYC Jazz Record, New York based brass quartet, The Westerlies will perform as part of Luther's Center Stage Series in the CFL Main Hall at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15. Readings and discussion group available
Selected readings and a discussion group are available ahead of Ibram Kendi's Feb. 28 Distinguished Lecture. Read the prologue of Kendi's "Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America" (National Book Award Winner) and two other short articles. Professor Guy Nave will lead discussion from 9:40-10:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, location TBD, and Kendi will be on hand for follow-up conversation the afternoon of Feb. 28. Community Music School spring semester registration open
Area musicians are invited to enroll for the Luther College Community Music School which offers group classes, private lessons and SoDa (Song and Dance) Club. Position openings
Full-time Regents Center custodian: Hours will generally be 2-10 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturdays. Must be able to read sufficiently to follow instructions, work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required. No experience required, will receive on-the-job training.
Full-time custodial weekend lead: Support weekend custodial staff in both academic and residential buildings. This position will work weekends to be custodial support for events as needed and then adjust hours during the week to equal 40 hours. Typical work schedule is 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, and 1-7 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays (weekday hours negotiable). Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent required.

Norma Hervey joined hundreds of Fulbright scholars, US and German officials in Berlin Jan. 28 when Angela Merkel was honored by the Fulbright Association. Renee Fleming, a former Fulbrighter in Germany, spoke, Christine Amanpour from CNN introduced Merkel who spoke to contemporary issues and mingled with the audience at the reception afterwards. Merkel noted that she was especially honored to receive an award first granted to Nelson Mandela. The event was on German television and was available to Fulbright scholars world wide via a webinar.

Chinese New Year officially begins Feb. 5 with the Year of the Pig. "The Pig is the 12th of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. Pig was late because he overslept. Another story says that a wolf destroyed his house. He had to rebuild his home before he could set off. When he arrived, he was the last one and could only take 12th place.
The Pig is also associated with the Earthly Branch, and the hours 9–11 in the night. In terms of yin and yang, the Pig is yin. In Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth.
