Tenure and promotions
At their February meeting, the Board of Regents granted tenure to Rachel Brummel, environmental studies/political science; Stephanie Fretham, biology; Joseph Madrigal, art; Anna Peterson, history; Dawn Reding, biology; Jennaya Robison, music; Lindsey Row-Heyveld, English; Justin Sprung, psychology; Robert Vrtis, theatre; Alexandra White, management; and Jill Wilson, education. All were promoted to associate professor. Congratulations!
New majors and minors approved
At their February meeting, the Board of Regents approved a major in music education, a major and minor in exercise science, and a minor in leadership studies. These new majors and minors were recommended and approved by the faculty during the fall semester.

Disability Services online testing form available
Faculty now have access to the new Disability Services online testing form. Please complete this form when you have a student who is activated in Disability Services and needs to take their exam in the Center for Academic Enrichment.

Because connection is incredibly important to our well-being, the Wellness Program's 2018-19 theme is "Connect More, Thrive More." Want to connect with more good, just-for-fun books? Register for the event which begins at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in Nobel and includes a lunch-and-learn conversation on "Just-For-Fun-Reading" with Luther's very own Emily Mineart. Lunch is provided by Wellness for those who register by Tuesday, Feb. 19!
Student summer employment information
Please remind students that Luther has opportunities for students looking for summer employment. Applications are in the Office of Human Resources (Main 25) or online. A list of open positions will soon be available there, as well.
Applications should be completed and returned to Human Resources by March 8. Students returning to Luther for fall 2019 are eligible to apply. This includes seniors who are student teaching a ninth semester in fall 2019 or graduating seniors who are taking summer classes. Encourage students to turn in applications as soon as possible. Books available for author visit
Copies of Erin Gruwell's "The Freedom Writer's Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them" are in stock in the Book Shop. Gruwell's lecture will start at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Valders 206 with the book signing to follow. Remaining copies of her book will be available at the signing.
Call for summer collaborative research proposals
The Summer Student/Faculty Collaborative Research program provides opportunity for students to engage in collaborative research projects with faculty members during the two months of Luther's summer session in June and July. Proposals are due in the Dean's Office, Union 262, by 5 p.m. Monday, March 11. Complete information and application guidelines are available online.

Scholar Recognition Day event Feb. 23
Luther College Admissions will host the second Scholar Recognition Day event Saturday, Feb. 23, in order to recognize the highest achieving admitted students at Luther and allow those students the chance to interact with faculty and current students.
Students who have been awarded the Founder's, President's or Dean's Scholarship, or the Martin Luther Award are invited to attend the event.
CEPE spring book groups
Explore viewpoints on various topics: religion and ethics; American identity and religious diversity; racial inequality; balancing the rights of pregnant women with the rights of the unborn; and how equal societies can improve everyone's well-being. Community Music School spring semester registration open
Area musicians are invited to enroll for the Luther College Community Music School which offers group classes, private lessons and SoDa (Song and Dance) Club. Group classes are offered Wednesday mornings to students in grades 3-8. SoDa Club, a community youth choir available to students in grades K-8, is held Monday nights. Ethnic Arts student volunteer opportunity
Volunteer opportunities are available for students during Ethnic Arts 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, March 2, in the Regents Center. Encourage students to participate in these ways:
- Tabling for a country: This involves setting up their own table about a country with materials and artifacts to make it interesting for visitors to learn more. This could be a home country or culture they have been a part of or know a lot about.
- Cultural performances: A skit, song, dance or story about their country/culture. It can be either traditional or modern.
- Crew work: Help set up or tear down the fair, move items and complete other tasks as assigned.
Students who are interested in participating in any of these ways should stop into the CIES office and sign up by Monday, Feb. 18. Any questions, ask a CIES staff member.

Not Quite Free Lunch Feb. 12
Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the Nobel Room, sponsored by Wellness. Screening of 'Freedom Writers'
Hillary Swank plays Erin Gruwell, the real-life teacher at Long Beach's Wilson High who, amid racial and gang tension, finds a way to connect with her at-risk, "unteachable" students. Gruwell helps them forego teenage pregnancy, drugs and violence, and re-chart their futures through writing. Watch the movie to prepare for Gruwell's keynote and visit to campus Wednesday, Feb. 20. The screening is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in Valders 206, and is open to the public with no charge for admission.
'You' television show discussion
Join Counseling Service along with advocates from Helping Services and Riverview Center for a discussion on the popular Lifetime/Netflix show "You." Discuss the show and information about healthy and unhealthy relationships from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in Main 116B.
'Islam in Europe' informational session
Encourage interested students to attend an informational session on the Paideia 450 "Islam in Europe" study abroad course for J-term 2020, which will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in Main 111. Professors Todd Green and Robert Christman will lead the session and answer any questions students may have about the course.
Emeriti colloquium Feb. 14
Having served as a college pastor at Luther since 1991, Pastor Mike Blair will draw on his experience to present a lecture on the topic of "The Evolution of Young Adult Spirituality" at the Emeriti Colloquium at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in the Mott Room. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Blackened salmon swipe plus night Feb. 14
Thursday, Feb. 14, come for a delicious dinner in the cafeteria. Blackened salmon with dill and caper cream over roasted spaghetti squash with lemon-seasoned asparagus will be served 5-7 p.m. for a meal swipe plus an extra $5. Limited dinners are available, and the regular meal will also be served.
CSS: Westerlies Brass Quartet Feb. 15
Praised as a "rare combination of approachable and unusual," by the NYC Jazz Record, New York-based brass quartet, The Westerlies, will perform as part of Luther's Center Stage Series in the CFL Main Hall at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15. Emma Big Bear highlighted at Luther College Woman's Club meeting
Learn about Emma Big Bear of the Winnebago Tribe and the handmade baskets for which she is known during the next meeting of the Luther College Woman's Club. Gruwell lecture Feb. 20
Teacher, educational activist and founder of Freedom Writers Foundation, Erin Gruwell will speak at Luther at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Valders 206. The teacher portrayed by Hillary Swank in the movie, "Freedom Writers," Gruwell empowers her class full of "unteachables" to re-chart their futures and speaks to the authenticity and stamina needed to fuel change and achieve success that others might not think possible. Readings and discussion group available
Selected readings and a discussion group are available ahead of Ibram Kendi's Feb. 28 Distinguished Lecture. Read the prologue of Kendi's National Book Award Winner "Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America" and two other short articles. Professor Guy Nave will lead discussion from 9:40-10:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in the Preus Library Hovde Room, and Kendi will be on hand for follow-up conversation the afternoon of Feb. 28. 'Marcher, Walker, Pilgrim' lecture Feb. 21
On an eight month walk from Los Angeles to Washington D.C., dozens of marchers became a mobile village, sounding an alarm about the climate crisis. Among those marchers was Ed Fallon, the author of "Marcher, Walker, Pilgrim," a story about his journey and experiences along the way. Fallon will speak about his story at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in Olin 102.
Before taking on the role of activist, Fallon acted as an Iowa state representative, spending 13 years as a Democratic representative in the Iowa Legislature.
Comedian Eric O'Shea Feb. 22
Hosted by SAC Entertainment, comedian Eric O'Shea will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in Marty's. Known for his creation of "Song for Commercials" and his celebrity impressions, he has more than four million hits on YouTube. O'Shea has appeared on NBC, ABC and the Disney Channel, and has performed at the Emmys. Tickets are $10 at the door.
Faculty Artist Series: Xiao Hu and Du Huang
Luther piano faculty members Xiao Hu and Du Huang will present a piano duo recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in Noble Recital Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The piano duo has selected for the program Austrian composer Franz Schubert's "Lebensstürme" (Storms of Life), D. 947 and 20th century Chinese composer Chu Wanghua's "Girl in Red" and "Celebration Dance," based on two traditional Chinese folk songs. The duo will also perform 20th century Russian composer Igor Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring," a piece published as a four-hand piano score in 1913 after its ballet and orchestral premiere inspired a riot.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS
Todd Green gave a lecture titled "Islamophobia and Xenophobia in the Context of Global Migration" at the Migration and Border Crossings Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, on Feb. 9. The conference was co-sponsored by Columbia Theological Seminary and Emory University's Center for the Study of Law and Religion.
Long-time Luther friend, supporter, athlete and coach Bob Naslund received the Spirit of Luther Award at spring semester opening convocation. Luther President Paula Carlson recognized Naslund and presented him the award. Naslund '65, "has been a dedicated coach and mentor to generations of Luther student-athletes and a champion of diversity and opportunity," said President Carlson when presenting the award.
Holly Moore completed a two-week residency at Harvard's Center for Hellenistic Studies in Washington, D.C. Moore was invited to use the Center's library collection, which specializes in scholarship on Greek and Roman antiquity, as part of her research into the dramatic role of slaves in Plato's dialogues. This project developed from the research she pursued on the ideology of freedom in Plato's defense of philosophy while a visiting researcher with Humboldt University's program in "Philosophy, Science and the Sciences" during the fall term.
