Faculty/staff Christmas party Dec. 7

President Carlson and Rev. Dr. Thomas Schattauer invite all faculty and staff to the Faculty and Staff Christmas Party, held 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in Peace Dining Room. Come share good cheer and luncheon fare with Luther friends and colleagues. Seating will be available throughout the second floor of Dahl Centennial Union. Another superb Christmas at Luther weekend! I'm thankful for all of the students, faculty and staff who worked hard to create a memorable performance and host thousands of visitors on campus. Christmas at Luther is surely a highlight of the Advent season for many. For some of our guests, this magnificent weekend is their first welcome into our community of faith and learning. Thanks for making this weekend so special.

As we approach final exams and other end-of-the-semester activities, we wish you and your loved ones a safe and joyous holiday.

Learn more about Luther's brand initiative

Please join us for one of the Brand Update meetings held the weeks of Nov. 27 and Dec. 3.

Before the semester ends, we invite you to learn about the brand research findings, discuss emerging ideas for Luther's brand strategy and hear what's coming in the spring semester.

This is a busy time of year, and we appreciate you taking time to register and attend one of the following sessions in Peace Dining Room. There will be light snacks for the morning and afternoon sessions and pizza for the early evening sessions.

Board of Regents update

Faculty, staff and emeriti should have received an email from the Board of Regents Wednesday, Nov. 28, with an update on the presidential search. Those who did not receive the email should contact Julie, <julie>, to get added to the list. 

Monthly admissions update

The fall 2019 monthly admissions reports will now be available online. Notices will be published in the Tuesday after the last day of the previous month. Contact Scot, <schasc01>, or 387-1430, with any questions.

Christmas staff meeting

Come relax and have fun at the annual "staff meeting" Christmas gathering at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in Peace Dining Room. Cash donations or nonperishable items will be accepted for the Decorah Community Food Pantry. Christmas sweaters and other festive Holiday apparel encouraged.

Now scheduling counseling service workshops

Counseling services is scheduling workshops for the spring semester. Counseling Service outreach assistants offer workshops on how to help a friend, self care and the escalation workshop (relationship violence) to classes, teams, student organizations, residence hall floors or other interested groups. Library books due Dec. 7

Friday, Dec. 7, is the due date for books checked out from the Main Stacks by faculty and staff on or before Sunday, Dec. 2. Books checked out by faculty and staff may be renewed online or by e-mailing <library>. The new due date is May 17, the last day of classes for the spring semester. Books that have already been renewed three times (two years) will not be renewed again; rather you will need to bring these books in physically to the circulation desk to have them checked in and then out again to "re-start the clock." Annual Fall Science Research Symposium Dec. 6

The annual Fall Science Research Symposium is 9:40-10:50 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Sampson-Hoffland Atrium and Valders Concourse. This is a unified event highlighting undergraduate student research in the sciences. The symposium includes more than 100 poster presentations by students from classes in biology, chemistry, environmental studies, math and nursing. All members of the Luther community are encouraged to come check out the products of student learning in the sciences.

Masters Swim Team begins season

Decorah Masters Swim Team starts its new three-month season. "Masters" does not mean we are fast it just means we are "old". As long as you can swim a comfortable freestyle, and you are over 18, you are welcome to join us! Practices are 6 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 4 p.m. Sundays. Center for Sustainable Communities clothing swap

Clean out that closet and help the community by contributing clean, gently used clothing to the Center for Sustainable Communities clothing swap. Bring clean, unwanted clothes to Valders 379 from now until Dec. 11 and they'll find a new home. Want to participate? Find more information here. 

Resilient Northeast Iowa: A Climate Conversation

The Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center is hosting a community forum on climate change 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Lingonberry in downtown Decorah. The Center for Sustainable Communities encourages people to attend this important event! As more information emerges about climate change, it's time to dig in and decide what can be done in everyone's lives and in the community to become more resilient to the changes that are already begun.

The Scrambler Challenge in January

January will soon be here and so will the desire to connect more, exercise more. Join the Wellness Team's 2019 start-off program called "The Scrambler Challenge." Peace Scholar applications due Feb. 1

Faculty and staff are asked to encourage sophomores and juniors who are interested in studying in Norway this summer to apply to the Peace Scholars program. An outgrowth of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, this scholarship provides funding for two students to study for a week at the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Lillehammer, and then for six weeks at the University of Oslo.  Details can be found at https://peacescholars.wordpress.com/.  Applications should be sent to Victoria, <victoria.christman>.

Third annual Student Stress-Less party
The third annual Student Stress-Less party is 8:30-10:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, in the Union. Hot chocolate and cookie decorating is at 8:30 p.m.; the Book Shop balloon drop with prices and promotions is at 9 p.m.; and the Book Shop is open 9-10:30 p.m. This is a great opportunity to step away from studying and re-energize!

Sign up for the final wellness screenings Dec. 11-12

During 2018, employees and spouses covered by the Luther College Health Care Plan have additional wellness benefits and requirements. Sign up for either Tuesday, Dec. 11, or Wednesday, Dec. 12, blood screenings on campus by contacting Wellness, <wellness>. Just a reminder that all physicals, blood draws and completions of the Health Risk Assessment must be completed by Monday, Dec. 31.

Not Quite Free Lunch Dec. 11

Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, in the Nobel Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The charge is $5, payable by cash, check or Luther ID. The menu includes turkey caprese biggie, no meat caprese biggie, butternut squash bisque and dessert. Contact Wellness, <wellness> with questions.

Resist phishing emails

Watch for these clues that a message could be a scam: poor grammar and punctuation, threats, a sense of urgency and asking recipients to click on a link or provide personal information.
