Luther announces presidential search committee
The Luther Board of Regents announced the members of the presidential search committee who will lead the process to identify Luther College's 11th president. In May, President Paula Carlson announced she will retire after the conclusion of the 2018-19 academic year. The complete list can be found here.
Fall semester Opening Convocation Aug. 30
Welcome the class of 2022 and celebrate the start of a new academic year at Opening Convocation at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, in the Center for Faith and Life. Convocation speaker is Emily Wilson, who translated this year's Paideia reading "The Odyssey." All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate. If possible, offices should close so all can attend.
Diversity Center changes

Family Weekend Sept. 21-23
The Family Weekend 2018 schedule can be found online. Hazardous materials pick-up
Environmental Services will conduct a campus hazardous materials pick up in the near future. Those who have materials they would like to have included in this pick-up, should contact Leah, <benzle02>, and include the name of the substance, quantity and current location by Wednesday, Aug. 29.

Book Shop professor spotlight
Congratulate Todd Green on his new book, "Presumed Guilty, Why We Shouldn't Ask Muslims To Condemn Terrorism." His book is now available for purchase in the Book Shop. He will give a lecture based on his new book at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in Olin 102; the event includes a book signing.
Jostens on campus
Need your Luther Class ring fixed or in the market to order a class ring? A Jostens representative will be on campus 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, Aug. 29-31, in the Union entrance.
Staff meetings for 2018-19
Joint exempt/non-exempt staff meetings are held eight times a year in Peace Dining Room. In order to provide office coverage, meetings will be held twice, covering the same agenda, 2 p.m. Tuesdays and 9 a.m. Wednesdays. This is a time change from last year. Dates are:

Paycheck checkup
The Internal Revenue Service is urging taxpayers to do a paycheck checkup soon. The IRS Withholding Calculator can help taxpayers make sure they have the right amount of tax taken out of their pay. Questions about your individual tax situation should be directed to your tax preparer. Updated W-4 forms, if necessary, should be submitted to the payroll office, 387-1135, in Main 118.
Use LCSecure Wireless network
The LCWireless5G network has been retired. Faculty, staff and students should prefer LCSecure on those devices that support connecting to it, like most computers, tablets and smartphones. The LCWireless network is intended for use by other devices such as game consoles or media streaming devices that don't support connecting to LCSecure. Both networks support 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz connections. For more information, contact the Technology Help Desk, <helpdesk>.
Updates for computers
At the start of the new academic year, there are updates waiting to be applied to computers through the KACE patching system–the little orange box that periodically appears in the corner of the screen. It is very important to accept and run these updates when they appear or computers may experience issues. Please do not snooze or cancel them. Thanks for installing these updates as soon as possible.

Luther employee fitness classes
Sign up today for the first six-week session of fall classes of wellness subsidized employee Yoga, Zumba and Tai Chi. Details and the registration form are available on the online fitness class site. Classes are open to current employees and their spouses. Email, <wellness>, with questions.
Luther offers Community Music School
Area musicians soon will have a new option for musical experiences. Luther music and education students are opening the Luther College Community Music School, open to anyone in the Decorah area. LCCMS offers group classes, private lessons and SODA Club, a community choir and dance program for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Group classes will be offered Wednesday morning during teacher in-service time. SODA is held Monday evenings.
Sign up for Decorah Masters swimming
A new school year means a new year of Decorah Masters swimming. Practices are Tuesdays at 6 a.m., Wednesdays at 6 p.m., Fridays at 6 a.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. Luther employees are eligible for a Wellness discount. We also have a new website! Before the season starts, we are hosting a series of swim clinics designed for new and returning swimmers. These clinics will follow our scheduled practices and will be $10 for both sessions: Starts and Turns , 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29; Butterfly and Breaststroke, 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31.

Chapel this week
Built into the class schedule and rhythm of life at Luther, chapel is a time for the community to gather for song, reflection and fellowship at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the CFL Main Hall. 'The Adjacent' on display
Taking objects found around her living space, painter Phoebe Jan-McMahon strives to create a place for viewers to escape the hustle of life with her work. Her exhibit, "The Adjacent," will be on display through Oct. 27 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the CFA. Her exhibit explores spaces and objects in her apartment. Her works delve into the quietness of "the adjacent," a place to escape and heal from the brutality of everyday life.
'Welcoming the Stranger: Translating the Odyssey for our times'
With themes of violence, wealth, power, family, hospitality and a desire for the comfort and safety of home, Homer's "The Odyssey" has stood the test of time and continues to challenges minds of every generation. Emily Wilson, who is the first known woman to pen a complete translation of "The Odyssey" in English, will give the Luther College Opening Convocation address, "Welcoming the Stranger: Translating the Odyssey for our times" 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, in the CFL.
Sophomores on the Commons CFL program Thursday
Faculty, staff, students, emeriti and guests are invited to join sophomore students for a program celebrating the completion of the first year of college and highlighting the opportunities available to Luther sophomores at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, in the CFL. Student, faculty and alumni speakers will share the insights they would go back and give to their sophomore selves to kick off a year of exploration, reflection and planning for sophomore students. Following the program, all sophomore students will attend a dinner outside on Bentdahl Commons and engage in reflective conversation with faculty volunteers. If possible, offices should close so all can attend.
'Joe's Odyssey' Aug. 30
Part lecture, part musical performance, part interactive discussion, "Joe's Odyssey" brings the famous epic poem to life in an original performance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, in the Nobel Recital Hall in Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. "Joe's Odyssey" ties into the year-long Paideia lesson of Homer's "The Odyssey," which tells the story of Odysseus' 10-year battle to return home following the Trojan War. Sponsored by SAC Impact and the classics department.

'Odysseus and His Women,' lecture Sept. 4
Join the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement in an ongoing conversation about this year's summer read, "The Odyssey." Long-time educator and classics instructor Peter Dodington will present "Odysseus and His Women," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Olin 214. He will discuss Odysseus's relationship with the women in his life, asking the question: does he achieve the "like-minded harmony" he seeks? Norse Athletic Association Fall Sports Luncheon Sept. 6
The Norse Athletic Association invites the community to the NAA Fall Sports Luncheon at noon Thursday, Sept. 6, in Peace Dining Room on the second floor of Dahl Centennial Union. Cost is $5 per person. A great chance to get firsthand information on Norse athletics, the luncheon features all of the fall sport coaches speaking on their respective seasons to date. The 2018-19 Norse Business Sponsors will be presented their plaques for the year, and an update on the new and ongoing facilities projects will be given as well.

CSS: PUSH Sept. 8

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS
Diane Scholl served as editorial adviser for three projects on Harriet Beecher Stowe and 19th century women's literature, published by Layman Poupard in South Carolina.
During the summer of 2018, Loren Toussaint co-organized a small-group conference meeting of the European Association of Social Psychology in San Sebastian, Spain. Approximately 40 social psychologists from across Europe met to discuss their research on forgiveness, apology, justice, trust, respect, hope and power. He also attended and presented at the International Consortium for Health Interventions and Promotions in Medicine and Psychology (I-CHIPMAP) in Coburg, Germany. I-CHIPMAP is an international collaboration of researchers from Austria, Germany, United Kingdom and United States, focused on understanding and implementing positive psychology to improve people's health and well-being. He was the featured speaker in the Aug. 27 podcast "Why is forgiveness so important to cancer patients?"
Victoria Christman co-edited a book "Persecution, Toleration, and Co-Existence: Responses to Religious Pluralism in Reformation Europe" with her colleague, Beth Plummer from the University of Arizona. The book grew out of an NEH summer seminar that Christman and Plummer attended in 2013, and explores various aspects of religious coexistence in 16th century Europe. Christman and Plummer both contributed chapters to the volume, which was published in August by Brill.
