ANNOUNCEMENTS

Commencement speaker

Vanessa (Grima Baldacchino) Frazier, Maltese ambassador and humanitarian, will receive an honorary degree and give the commencement address. Frazier, who graduated from Luther in 1990, began her career as a student diplomat in 1992 and has been a member of the diplomatic corps of Malta since 1994. While serving as Director for Defense Matters in the Office of the Prime Minister for Malta, Frazier and her directorate helmed Malta's consolidated response to the Arab Spring and the crisis in Libya. Her efforts included the creation of the Humanitarian Hub in Malta, which proved one of the most important Maltese efforts dedicated to resolving the Libyan crisis. She was praised for her work during this time by a number of world leaders, and her team was applauded for its "twenty-four hour availability and can-do attitude to solving problems," which was considered the driving force behind Malta's success in supporting the UN Resolutions on Libya. Following these accomplishments, Frazier was appointed Ambassador for Immigration and later Secretary of State at Malta’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She then held ambassador positions to Belgium, Luxembourg and NATO and to Italy, San Marino and Rome-based UN bodies.

Paideia All-college Summer Reading Books Available Now
The all-college summer reading for 2019 is "The Line Becomes a River: Dispatches from the Border" by Francisco Cantú. Raised by the daughter of a Mexican immigrant, Cantú studied international relations at American University and became obsessed with understanding the borderlands where he grew up. Wanting to experience the realities of the border for himself, Cantú took a job with the U.S. Border Patrol and worked in the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas from 2008-2012. In his memoir, Cantú attempts to understand identity and violence, while discovering a human connection that is stronger than the border itself. Copies are available to faculty and staff without cost, sponsored by Paideia and the Dean's Office. Pick up your copy in the Luther Book Shop!

Closed for inventory
The Book Shop will be closed for inventory Tuesday-Friday, May 28-31. Sorry for any inconvenience.
