Showcase Concert: Symphony Orchestra and Nordic Choir May 24

Symphony Orchestra and Nordic Choir will present their annual spring showcase concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 24, in the CFL Main Hall. The Friday and Saturday showcase concerts are part of the 2019 Commencement weekend celebrations. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Those unable to attend may view the concert live online at stream.luther.edu/music.

VPA presents Senior Exhibition May 25

Visual and Performing Arts Department will host a Commencement exhibition featuring selected works from all of the art senior projects completed this year with a reception at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 25, in the Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the CFA. The students with artwork included in the exhibition are Samantha Bratland, Joseph Cowan, Ryan Koning, Anh Le, Madeline Skjervold, Max Skrzypek, Annie Stenseth and Casey Weber.

Baccalaureate May 25

Baccalaureate will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 25 in the CFL Main Hall. Guests should be seated by 7:45 p.m. A freewill offering will be taken and designated to local and global charities in honor of the senior class. The celebratory worship service includes hymns, prayers and blessings for graduates and their families, as well as special anthems sung by Collegiate Chorale. This ecumenical service includes prayer petitions that celebrate the diversity of religious traditions represented in the graduating class.

Commencement May 26

Luther will celebrate Commencement at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 26, in Carlson Stadium, where President Paula Carlson will confer the Bachelor of Arts degree on Luther's class of 2019. Luther alumna Vanessa (Grima Baldacchino) Frazier, Maltese ambassador and humanitarian, will receive an honorary degree and give the Commencement address.

Balalaika Ensemble to perform at TMORA in Minneapolis June 7

As part of the festival celebration "Days of Russian Culture," Luther's Balalaika Ensemble performs at 7 p.m. Friday, June 7 in The Museum of Russian Art (TMORA) in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Save the date: Farwell Distinguished Lecture October 2019

Rebecca Traister will give the Farwell Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, October 10. Her talk will focus on topics discussed in her most recent book, Good and Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women's Anger, which explores the transformative power of female anger and its ability to transcend into a political movement. Andy Hageman and Ryan Gjerde published a collaborative work that features an essay on food and gender along with an interactive database of foods and drinks in the tv series "Twin Peaks." 

Joram Mutenge '19, was announced the winner of the Erdman Prize for Entrepreneurship after the "Pitch Off" competition Friday, May 10. Mutenge studies philosophy and business management and decided to start his business, called Teyapool, after taking an entrepreneurship course taught by Tim Schweizer.

Guy Nave has been selected from a national pool of nominees to participate in a week-long faculty seminar on the teaching of interfaith understanding. The seminar will take place June 16-20 at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. The program aims to broaden faculty members' knowledge and strengthen their teaching of interfaith understanding through the development of new courses and resources.

Diane Scholl's poems "For Three Children Buried on the Farm" and "In the Field Museum" appear in the current issue of North Dakota Quarterly. Scholl's chapbook, Salt, named Editor's Choice in the Rane Arroyo Poetry Contest, and published by Seven Kitchens Press, appears later this spring.

Anne Wilson '20, of Zumbrota, Minnesota, is the 2019 recipient of the $1250 Lucille Stansberry Rosholt Award for Distinction in Accompanying and Collaborative Keyboard Performance. Wilson plans to graduate with majors in religion and music. She is the student of Xiao Hu and Nicholas Shaneyfelt.
