Student Research Symposium call for applications

The Honors Advisory Committee is pleased to announce the call for applications for the annual Luther College Student Research Symposium, which will be held Friday, May 5. Encourage students to submit proposals and find information at www.luther.edu/symposium.

Open portrait day reminder

Open portrait day is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month in the Media Relations office, Union 213. Professional head shots are free for staff, faculty and students; passport photos are $5. It is important to remind students that need passport photos and head shots to plan ahead and attend an open portrait day before the approaching deadlines.

All-college summer reading

"There Was and There Was Not" has been selected as the 2017 all-college summer reading. Author Meline Toumani writes about her move to Istanbul to try to understand the legacy of the 1915 Armenian genocide, discovering how we can see humanity in those with whom we are at odds. Copies will soon be available at the Book Shop with no charge to faculty and staff.

ICF McElroy student/faculty research call for proposals

Iowa College Foundation McElroy Trust Student/Faculty Research Project internal proposals for 2017-18 are due April 12. Student participants must be juniors or seniors in fall 2017. Applications require dual authorship by the proposing student, or team of students, and a sponsoring faculty member. Funds may be used to support all expenses of a credible research project except faculty stipends. The maximum award is $2,000. Luther is eligible to submit up to four proposals. Forms are available in the Dean's Office, Union 262 or by email, <brandtja>.

Luther employee commuting habits

Information about employee commuting habits is an important part of Luther's Carbon Footprint and Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System Report. Please take two minutes and tell Sustainability how you get to work via the employee commuting survey. Sustainability would appreciate responses by March 1.

Community Table

The Community Table is a great place for students to meet new people and enjoy a technology-free conversation with fellow Norse. Encourage students to eat at the community table at 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays during the academic year beginning March 6. The can look for the table sign, sit down and enjoy.

Safety tip from the Risk Management and Safety Committee

Don't be scammed by the scam artist! In the midst of income tax season, be wary of anyone calling claiming to be the IRS. Sometimes these callers are aggressive and threatening, so such a call is received, hang up. Do not give out any personally identifiable information. The IRS will contact taxpayers via mail and never by telephone.

Community Supported Agriculture rebates are back

Eat well and support local farmers: employee households are eligible to receive up to $100 towards the purchase of a Community Supported Agriculture share in 2017. A list of participating CSA Farms and share options can be found online. There's something for everyone! Email <sustainability> with questions.

Seeking recommendations for class of 2017 profiles

The Luther Alumni Magazine will profile eight students from the class of 2017 in this fall's issue. We're looking for students who, together, represent a wide range of majors, interests, backgrounds and post-Luther plans. Please send profile suggestions to <magazine> by March 1. Please also tell us why you are recommending the student or students.

Ash Wednesday meal in the Caf

Ash Wednesday dinner in the Cafeteria on Wednesday, March 1, is extra special with a herb crusted salmon meal for an extra $5. The salmon will be served with roasted garlic beurre blanc, grilled asparagus, roasted cherry tomatoes and creamy Parmesan polenta. Normal menu options will also be available.

Luther baseball: Vs. Cancer Foundation fundraiser

Luther's baseball program is partnering up with the Vs. Cancer Foundation to help raise money for kids' cancer research. Visit the donation page to donate and spread the word! Luther baseball will also host a game dedicated to spreading awareness at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, against Dubuque at home. 

National Library Week 'READ' poster submissions

Preus Library is accepting entries from the community to be featured in "READ" posters in celebration of National Library Week April 9-15. Community members are encouraged to email <reading> and talk about why libraries are important to them. Winners will be featured in their own "READ" poster that they can keep! Examples can be viewed online; submissions can be from individuals or small groups. Luther's celebration of National Library Week is sponsored by the Library.

On the Alumni Profile page,Krista Wahlstrom '15 talks about working in a lab that studies drug addiction and learning/memory. "My biology degree provided me with the perfect path to pursue neuroscience," she says.

Michael Toso '04 discusses his work designing, monitoring and evaluating social and behavior change communication programs, including providing support to malaria programs in Nigeria and Mozambique.

Student recitals are held in Noble Recital Hall and are followed by a reception. Both recitals and receptions are open to the public with no charge for admission.

National TRIO Day open house

Please join the staff and students of the TRIO Achievement Program for an open house today, Tuesday, Feb. 28. In celebration of National TRIO Day, the community is invited to come by TRIO's new space on the lower level of Preus Library between 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Learn more about TRIO and what it does, plus enjoy tasty treats and register for door prizes.

Chris Norton: The Power to Stand

SAC Leadership presents Luther alumnus Chris Norton. Chris Norton is a keynote speaker and author who calls upon audiences to focus on response instead of situation, and to be defined by attitude rather than circumstance. Chris will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 in the CFL Main Hall, with a question and answer session to follow his talk. Tickets available for $5 at the at Ticket Office. Please note the change of location from last week's Tuesday ad.

Ash Wednesday service

The community is invited to gather at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1, in the CFL Main Hall for an ecumenical Ash Wednesday service. Join College Ministries as we begin the Lenten season with the imposition of ashes and sharing Holy Communion.

The Nile Project panel discussion 

In addition to their Saturday performance, the Nile Project's Mina Girgis, producer and CEO, will deliver a lecture demonstration with musicians of the Nile Project at 3 p.m. Friday, March 3, in the CFL Recital Hall. The demonstration lecture, led by Girgis and Nile Project musicians, will begin with a discussion of how the group's creative process relates to the efforts of diplomats and water professionals in finding solutions to hydropolitical issues in the Nile region. In the second half of the lecture, Nile Project musicians will demonstrate the composition process used in the group. The lecture/musical demonstration is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Center Stage Series: The Nile Project

The Nile Project, a cross-cultural collaboration that brings artists from 11 Nile countries together for a musical celebration of Nile identity, will perform at Luther at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 4, in the CFL Main Hall. Part environmental awareness initiative, part musical collaboration, the 35-member collective comes together from 11 different East African countries to create a unified sound while maintaining each country's unique culture and musical tradition. Tickets for the Center Stage Series performance of The Nile Project, on sale in Luther's Ticket Office, may be purchased online at http://www.tickets.luther.edu/ or via the Luther Ticket Office.

Faculty Artist Series: Igor Kalnin with Rochelle Sennet

Igor Kalnin will be joined by guest pianist Rochelle Sennet to perform as Duo MemDi at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 5. Kalnin and Sennet will perform works by Saint-Saëns, Jeffrey Mumford, Paganini and César Frank. Part of Luther's Faculty Artist Series, the recital will be held in the NRH and is open to the public with no charge for admission.   

Margot Fassler: 'Cosmos and Creation'

Author and sacred music historian, Margot Fassler, will deliver a lecture at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, in the CRH. The lecture, titled "Hildegard's Chants for Cosmos and Creation" will focus on the works of Hildegard of Bingen, a nun and scientist. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Center for Ethics and Public Engagement TEDTalks

Join the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement at 9:45-10:45 a.m. Thursday, March 9 in Valders 262 for a screening of the TEDTalk by Oxford Professor Alexander Betts, "Our refugee system is failing. Here's how we can fix it." A discussion of Betts' ideas and their implications for the current refugee crisis in the EU will follow the 20-minute talk. Please note the change in location from Hovde Lounge to Valders 262.
